Pros The touch screen is easy and generally intuitive. Using it in the driving mode is quite good, if not perfect.
Cons It is very poor for walking.
Summary Lood for a better combination unit. It gives driving directions when walking. The cursor are some feet that are wierd, and difficult to interpert. When you are not walking, that is stopped with the unit on, in "creates" tradks. The unit keeps defaulting do driving mode and the default cursor. You should also consider Garmin has a tight lock on maps, and once you use a card for a Garmn map, it is burned.
Pros can be used for geocaching and hiking. Great contour lines
Cons Organizing multiple waypoints causes drops and duplicates. If you make changes in waypoints, you might end up with duplicates and others deleted. Garmen can duplicate problem, and has not resolved problem. (2months)
Summary Garmen is aware of the problem for 2 months and has yet got back to me to fix the problem. Every time I enter 6 or more waypoints and the have to add another point and reorganize, I might have a duplicate or it might drop a waypoint.
Pros Great for driving. I have never had it freeze up. Very user friendly. Mine speaks street names.
Cons A few errors while typing because of small screen and thick fingers. Fair for finding geocaches. I would like a clearer pointer screen.
Summary Nice all-around unit. Kind of like a dual purpose motorcycle. I got mine off E-Bay for $79.
Pros Contrary to the review above, Garmin has provided Text-to-Speech which gives you street names by way of an update available from their website. I found satellite acquisition to be acceptable and subsequent use showed it to be very accurate.
Cons Getting the mentioned downloads was not so easy and the instructions a little unclear.
Garmin has a couple of tools for updating that seemed to conflict on my PC. The Communicator Plug-in and the Web Updater didn't seem to play well together.
Summary I am very happy with this unit. It excels at what the Nuvi series is known for - in car navigation. It gives you topographic maps for hiking and can also be loaded with marine maps. Once I waded through their website and got the the software (3.42) update and downloaded the new TTS (Text-to-Speech) files, It has been great. I am very pleased with this unit and would recommend it to anyone wanting a crossover type unit.
The geocaching abilities of the Nuvi 500 were good enough that I won't be using my GPSMap CSX anymore. This is so much easier. (The price is great as well.)
