"Good All-around Unit"
Pros: Contrary to the review above, Garmin has provided Text-to-Speech which gives you street names by way of an update available from their website. I found satellite acquisition to be acceptable and subsequent use showed it to be very accurate.
Cons: Getting the mentioned downloads was not so easy and the instructions a little unclear.
Summary: I am very happy with this unit. It excels at what the Nuvi series is known for - in car navigation. It gives you topographic maps for hiking and can also be loaded with marine maps. Once I waded through their website and got the the software (3.42) update and downloaded the new TTS (Text-to-Speech) files, It has been great. I am very pleased with this unit and would recommend it to anyone wanting a crossover type unit.
Garmin has a couple of tools for updating that seemed to conflict on my PC. The Communicator Plug-in and the Web Updater didn't seem to play well together.
The geocaching abilities of the Nuvi 500 were good enough that I won't be using my GPSMap CSX anymore. This is so much easier. (The price is great as well.)
