Great Unit, 12v speaker/adapter sucksby otrpu - January 22, 2008
Pros: Been running OTR with it for years
Cons: Had to buy a speaker/adapter every year
Review: I've logged neigh onto half million miles running under the StreetPilot III Delux. B2B, C2C, several Can Provinces, up the Alcan to Fairbanks and Anchorage. First year I wore the beanbag mount out, replaced it with a RAM window mount. Mostly it's a very sturdy tool. I mean I'm a talkin all day every day. Only a few times it didn't know where I wanted to go, but a few times it told me I wasn't where I was. Digital maps have some accuracy problems too. In a prior life I made USGS Topo Maps, fur bout 28 years. Most the time I'd leave the speaker din plug unplugged. Had a preference fur Sat Radio, and CB was always on case someone needed sumtin. Tween that and the Sat Radio I didn't need voice prompts, (which many times came too late to be helpful), it could get a tad distractin in my cab. I wished they'ed revised maps at least anually. But my main complaint was I had to replace the durn 12v speaker/adapter at least once a year every year. I think I've got 6 of um in a box. If you leave it plugged in the same vehicle it works great, but too fragile to be a pluggin and unpluggin all the time. Also, invariably the durn thing would recalc the route just when I needed information for my next interchange and more than once I'd have to exit and get back on going the way I really wanted to go. I hear they fixed this in the later versions, but I'm too cheap to upgrade units, only maps. It's been a good unit, and I may have used it more than any other user. I'd give it a 10 if it wasn't for the crummy adapter plug.

For Four Year Old Technology it is an Excellent Productby TedG - November 12, 2005
Pros: Easy to Use. Easy Setup. Don't Leave Home Without It
Cons: Old Technology. May take you down a dirt road.
Review: I use my SPIII every day. I make up routes on people to see. It is easy to add additional stops. I find any type of resturant I am I the mood for. Maybe one day the will add AAA star ratings with each hotel or resturant. In Every town there have Points of Interest that get me exactly to where I want to go. It has never failed me and always gives me new short cuts I would never of none about. One Con I wish I could avoid dirt roads going down steep hills but that has only happened three or four times in 4-1/2 years. And I could always turn around if I wanted to do and hit the detour button to reroute me right away. It is great when there are no street names and it takes you very close to the front door on the same side of the street. One hint, when I am typing in an address I add the street number to the begining of the waypoint (the address is renamed and reduced to 6 or 10 characters). I have turned a lot of people on the GPS systems and they all seem to buy Garmin products. I plan to keep using my for another couple of years and have a new one in my next new vehicle. It also sits on the dashboard and I never have to look down and I can keep my eyes on the road.

Pros: I don't have any positive comments on this unit.

Cons: Needs a lot of time to calculate routes in the UK and Europe. Expecrt several minutes for this task. Very often if you make a mistake, recalculations are necessary, this CAN take minutes too, leaving you stranded while waiting roadside. Finding addresses

Phenomenal piece of equipmentby - November 18, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: Almost better than the $400,000 navigation system in my aircraft! Works as advertised. Intuitive controls and menues. If a turn is missed the unit quickly recalculates a new route. My first "test" for this unit was into the jaws of downtown Philadelphia during Friday night rush hour. Accident-blocked streets and detours didn't phase the StreetPilot III. I got to my destination with little stress or angst. Buy the "Deluxe" box to receive all detailed regions in the US. This is not just a toy. The verbal commands allow a driver to concentrate on driving; not rubber-necking trying to find a street sign or number.

Had it for about four monthsby - October 3, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: After reading the comments on this site, it occurs to me that some people expect this thing to be infallible. You have to remember this is not your Mom - its just a smart map. It doesn't know if there is road construction or detours. It is a machine and machines fail (so do people). You have to at least take a look at a map before you head out on a long trip to see if the route the SPIII plots make sense. I bought my Deluxe unit (you get the whole country unlocked) to navigate from my home in Minnesota to a meeting in Rhode Island. I did bring along a road atlas -just in case. It got me 1800 miles to the hotel without a false turn, but when starting home, the unit "crashed" when I shut it off during a recalculation. When I tried to turn it back on, it would get to the first screen and then shut down. I called the support line and after waiting on hold for 30 minutes, the rep came on and told me I had to do a system reset by pushing about four buttons at the same time. It wiped all my stored waypoints, but at least I was able to access my maps on the storeage card and I got home just fine. Since the crash occurred in July, I have had no more problems, but I am still going to bring a road atlas on any long trips. Oh yes, the iunstructions are pretty obtuse. You really have to play with the unit to learn how to run this thing.

Looks and works like its priceby - August 5, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: It ain't cheap, but it doesn't disappoint. I got the Street Pilot III Deluxe, which comes with the unlock code for the entire City navigator CD, and a 128 MB memory card. I live in Baltimore, and the memory card holds the detailed city maps for the entire North Atlantic region. I used it the first time before I had installed the memory card, and the resident base map navigated me to Ocean City and back. After I loaded the city data, it showed even the smallest podunk roads. When you just operate it in a "moving map" mode, without route directions, it shows your position, and the name of each upcoming intersection or interstate exit. Really nice! When it's navigating, it shows an enlarged view of each turn and your car's path through the turn, along with the voice prompts, and a large on-screen prompt. You would have to work to get lost. It's solid and high quality. The dash mounting system is well thought out.

When compared to Car Navigators, it is the lowest cost unit with a good feature set.by - June 27, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: SP-III operates just as advertised. It is the lowest cost stand alone car navigator, yet it offers a full autorouting feature set. The unit comes with one USA region unlock code and the rest of the USA costs an addional $150 or so. This makes it BY FAR the least expensive unit overall in the stand alone Car Navigator market. Will it navigate you without any errors? No. Neither will the $3000 units. I class this unit as a good buy with no serious problems at all.

Too much for there mistakesby - June 24, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: Unit comes with only 1 dca and to get what you need to truly operate this unit will cost you BIG money. Very deceiving. Once loaded for an additional $600.00 it make many mistakes and is very slow on processing info. Garmin should be up front and put a complete package together so the buyer truly knows up front what this poor navigational system will cost you. Thay should also improve the system to be at least a good GPS also. They have been around too long to put something like this out on the market. Sad part is is that I bought and I am stuck with 2 of these units.

Great unit with unhelpful manualby - June 23, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: I received my Streetpilot III as a gift, but when I tried to turn it on I felt like an aborigine who finds a portable radio on the ground and knows what it does but can't figure out how to turn it on. The manual has a picture showing how to insert the batteries, but not a word about the trick you need to know to remove the mounting bracket that covers the battery compartment door so you can get them in! It's perfect after you get it turned on and working -- Performance easily exceeded all expectations. Others have mentioned feeling cheated when they discover you need to buy a $100 code to get maps for more than few states of the US map on the City Navigator CD. Worse, the road detail in rural areas is good for major roads only. I e-mailed Garmin to ask how to find a way to see all the rural roads that were missing, and never got a reply other than a form "thank you for contacting us" e-mail. The answer is: buy a Garmin Mapsource Topographic or Roads and Recreation CD which gives you the whole country for your $100.

Too slow you have to pre-read the roadby - June 14, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: I have been using this product for 6 months now, and disappointment grows bigger and bigger. The worst thing of this unit is "SLOW REACTING QUIDANCE." It is just too slow you have to read a map on the screen before you take an action. Otherwise, you would find yourself going on the wrongway. And I am a "SLOW DRIBER." If you usually spped on freeways, dont expect this unit to tell you where to go beforehand. Sattelite acquistion time is very slow, too. It says it usually take 15sec warm, 45sec cold, expect 30sec warm, 2min cold. If you live in a metro area where there are many sky-scrapers, expect about 5 minutes cold.

Excellent unit!by - May 24, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: My wife’s Honda Odyssey has the factory navigation system in it and, after using it for a couple of years now, don’t know how we ever lived without. I had to have one for my 4Runner. I have been looking at aftermarket (primarily built-in) devices for a couple of years now and anything that comes close to the Honda system was in the $4000 range. Bought the Garmin StreetPilot III about 3 months ago and can’t say enough good things about it. Just as accurate as the Honda and almost as easy to use. And I can take it with me on trips. Took it to Las Vegas recently and used it in our rented Plymouth Prowler! Now that’s flexibility. The unit is not quite as easy to use as the touch screen in the Honda but is pretty easy once you learn the shortcuts. In fact, it actually has some features that the Honda doesn’t. The only feature the Honda has over the StreetPilot III is the ability of the unit to state the name of the upcoming turn’s street name. The Honda voice direction states the name of the street to turn on in the upcoming turn whereas the StreetPilot III just states there is an upcoming turn. One must glance at the unit to see the name of the street. The display is very clear and easy to read both day and night (and I have bad eyesight). Even in the Prowler with the top down the display did not wash out. Quality and construction is excellent. Mounting base is a little large for some dashboards though. Wish there were a few more mounting options. I purchased the City Navigator unlock code for all regions and the 128MB card to hold more areas at once. This is a very nice combination. Holds enough detail to plan a road trip from Northern CA to about mid OH. Only gripe with this was the cost of the 128MB card. Very expensive and I suspect it’s just a Garmin repackaged SmartMedia card at 6x the cost. Also purchased the MetroGuide USA software. Don’t waste your money on it. City Navigator maps are very accurate but provide few details in the rural areas. The MetroGuide was supposed to fill in the gaps in the rural areas but the maps are so inaccurate that they are pretty much useless. Stick with City Navigator only and tough it out in the rural areas. I have used the unit with the City Navigator maps primarily in Northern CA and in the Las Vegas area and am very impressed with the accuracy of both address and place searches. I noticed a number of reviews stating how the unit “eats” batteries. This is pretty much true but I don’t believe the unit was really designed to “run” on internal batteries. They come in handy when you turn the car off (with switched external power of course) and you want do look at the display a bit more. Not good for much else. I use 1600MH metal hydride batteries and get a few hours out of them. This combination would be very useful if the unit recharged the batteries when on external power, but no such luck. I purchased the StreetPilot III, 128MB memory card, City Navigator all area unlock code, extra permanent base, portable beanbag base, and 4 extra mounting tapes. Got the whole thing for about $1200 via the web. This is far cheaper then the built-in units and just as functional. Felt the price was reasonable except for the memory. Also, the unlock code was a bit high. Guess you have to pay to play. Even still, I would highly recommend this unit to anybody reasonably adept at operating technical gadgets (like a Palm Pilot). However, if your VCR is still blinking “12:00”, better buy a car with a built in touch screen navigation unit.

Get it! But, buyers bewareby - April 30, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: You can't get anything better than that for your money. Not only does it run the same NavTech made map SW (as the $2000 - $4000 systems do), but in addition, you can download a different map set (Metro Guide) in case the City Navigator (Garmin's packaging of the NavTech SW)doesn't give you good, street level details. Last week Garmin announced to a few dealers that on Mid June they come with a new, "Deluxe" version of SPIII. This will include 1. A new, updated version of MapSource (= City Navigator), 2. A FULL free unlock of ALL the zones, (as compared to 1 only today), 3. A 128 Meg card, as compared to the 32 one that is shipped today with teh unit, and 4. a "bean bag" - a portable mount. If you drive a lot now and use the map extensively - get it. You wouldn't want to drive any other way afterwards.

Great system that you can take with you when changing vehicles.by - April 14, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: As a gadget junkie, I have wanted a navigation system since they first appeared as OEM installed equipment in high-end vehicles several years ago. Despite my interest in these systems, I had a hard time justifying the $2,000 OEM price for a item I felt I truly needed maybe 4-5 times a year. I also knew that once I had a nav-system, it would be one of those items I would never want to be without; and who likes having to purchase the option again on their new car when trade-in time rolls around (unless you are a shareholder in the OEM supplier of nav systems)? The SP III is the first product I found that offers true portability (no external drives), address routing, points of interest, with a clear, large color display and voice prompting. I would HIGHLY recommend the SP III. The display is very clear even in direct sunlight. It also has a nice trip computer feature that tracks mileage, average speed, and total driving and stop time. At first, the auto-routing seems to come up with seemingly longer "fastest" routes, but trust the system. We drove from Michigan to the Florida Keys and it shaved roughly three hours off each way over last year's pen and paper method. The SP III is also definitely worth premium over the SP Colormap and SP I.

This product is a life saver to anyone that needs quick efficient and precise driving directions. This map data is so fantastic I rarley find myself searching for addresses. 97% of all addresses I chase for my business are easily found. I cannot emphasize how GREAT this product truly works.

Cons:
Review: Excellent. Very accurate gps positioning, and very easy to operate. Mounts in car without screws or wires. Intuitive operation. Only complaint is that manuals are not very detailed regarding installation, and software that comes with unit needs to be updated over Garmin's website, or else the USB data transfer device doesn't work and the unit doesn't recognize address searching. Once updated software downloads are run, though, unit and transfer device both work perfectly. Can't do better without spending about $1200 more, and even then, you won't get more features. Wife loves it, and works it by herself. We no longer need mapquest or pre-trip planning. Highly recommended.

Better than Street Pilot Iby - February 24, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: Upgraded from regular streetpilot. Has everything I want. It would be nice if the unit had the screen flexability that the Garmin V has. My only beef is with the mapping. Buying extra regions is a nice money maker for Garmin which is not the worst of it. The fine print on the box mentions that only select city's are included. I found this out the hard way. Some small city's and towns are not in the software. This is something Garmin does not put in big print when you buy the thing. The good news is you can load the missing areas from Metroguide which was fine since I had it. But I would be pretty upset if I had to shell out another $100 bucks. Good thing the unit can load multiple maps. Come on Garmin, if a guy spends $1000 on a GPS he should not have to stop at gas stations for maps.

Pros:
Cons:
Review: This was a great product until I read the fine print. After payint $1,000 for the unit, they give you one free map and make you pay $100 for all the others. As someone who travels a great deal, this unit would quickly add up to several thousands of dollars, and it is still only a GPS. I would recommend buying an iPaq (or another brand), for $500 and then adding on a GPS unit. This way you get all of the maps (other companies don't use Garmins trick), and you have a smaller piece of hardware, with the same screen size, better display, more memory, and can be used for more than a GPS!

Garmin Streetpilot stinks!by - February 3, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: Stupid device tried to have me drive across the San Francisco Bay and not by a bridge! The only thing this junk is for is to locate your current position. The Magellan 750 System is lightyears better then them. Sorry, I wasted close to $2,000 on StreetPilot III.

Excellent GPS-will tell you exactly where to go and how to get there with voice instructionsby - January 28, 2002

Cons:
Review: Would like to see the price of the data cartridges to come down. For the price of this unit Garmin should give the whole US to the purchaser d(not just a given area.

it really works!!!!!by - January 24, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: I haven't used the support, or gotten the instruction video. I really don't understand how that little woman inside the machine knows when you deviate from the selected route, and can recalculate the alternate route. I think it's a great product - no monthly fees and upgrades available on the web. It's extremely precise in the measurements and directions. NO MORE MAPS!!!!!!!

Great travel tool and fun too!by - January 22, 2002

Review: This is a hot little machine that would make any technogeek like me want to pay attention if you are considering GPS. Although a little confusing at first as far as learning how to use it, a few trial runs and a couple of miles down the road and you can navigate anywhere from Anchorage to Miami. One drawback is the memory module which the unit comes with a 32 MB card which although isn't bad, if you really want some storage capability either carry a laptop to keep the 32 MB updated for those long distance trips or purchase one of the 128 MB cards. As these cards are unique to Garmin as are the navigation CD's, you kind of have to think of this somewhat as a visit to the dentist, but once you buy the module and associated map CD's you can master your way almost anywhere with great ease. Two days after purchasing the Streep Pilot III, we hit the road for 800 miles covering areas we had never been from freeways to back country and with all this travel, we never broke out a paper map/atlas or had to ask for help. As my wife said, "This is the real answer for guys who don't ask for directions even when they are lost"! For a great price, keep track via CNET because with the dollars you will save, you can buy that larger data card and data CD's.

The Best Thing Ever Createdby - January 17, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: I admit I don't like asking for directions and not great with a map. This is the best thing ever created and worth every single penny. I took it to Yosemite National Park, and never got lost once. I could just be on the road driving and route back to hotel I was staying within a minute (max). This is truly a godsend in disguise
