    "Excellent navigation"

by mjkxtra on April 20, 2005

Pros: easy to use, holds a lot of data

Cons: Can only be used in a car

Summary: The Garmin 2610 is a really excellent tool to use to get around. I moved 1500 miles from the North East to Florida and using the included 128MB card was able to carry around virtually all the maps I wanted during the trip. Close to the end I needed a grocery store and was able to find one quick.

    Beanbag mount works perfectly.

You do NOT want to operate this while driving. If you change your plans or want to create a new route, find a local restaurant, it is necessary to pull over.

Sometimes directions are confusing when there are a number of roads branching off at one point or you have a turn coming up close to another road. If you will make a mistake, the unit will quickly recalculate a new route to your destination. Easy enough to create a route from where you are to any place you want to go, including home. The home setting is very confusing to set. Better instruction is needed.

If you are on a multilane highway, you need to be prepared to be in the correct lane before you come up on the exit. I?ve missed a left hand exit ramp as I was in the center lane. Usually that is not a problem.

Also, this is NOT portable, you cannot use it outside the car as it does not have batteries nor an internal speaker. To be fair, it is not a multi-function unit but some allowances could have been made for using it on walks or when flying.

I?ve only lost the signal when driving in tunnels, between some high rises and one bizarre stretch of road in CT. It usually comes back really quickly. On that road in

The mapsource software is a bit of a let down. Finding a correct address is sometimes exceedingly difficult. To find numerical streets is often impossible. Just today I was searching for NW 6th Way in Ft Lauderdale and NW 112th Ave in Medley, Florida. Neither could be found. The recommended way to search is to find the street number skipping the prefix and then searching through the street names. This does not often work with a street number address, it sometimes does not come back with correct street name.

I think Garmin might be embarrassed that I had to go to mapquest.com to find the street, then use mapsource to zoom in on that address that I?d found on mapsource and set the waypoint where I needed it.

Mapsource also does not work well with other Garmin maps, if you use it with the worldmap, you cannot plot a route using the major highways.

Routes are sometimes annoying, if you want to avoid toll roads but take an interstate it is not possible.
