Garmin's on the road again with its latest vehicle-navigation system, the StreetPilot 2620, which cruises in style with touch-screen technology and a more compact design. You'll find a trusty copilot in the 2620, with its great accuracy, its text- and voice-guided directions, and its large points of interest (POI) database. The only speed bump is its high $1,516.65 price tag--typical of systems of this kind--but Garmin does throw in a couple of extras, such as a handy remote control. But if you can live without such amenities, take a look at the TomTom GO, which offers plenty of features and accurate guidance for about half the price.

Editor's note: We have changed the rating in this review to reflect recent changes in our rating scale. Click here to find out more.

The well-designed Garmin StreetPilot 2620 is more compact (2.0 by 3.2 by 5.6 inches) and lighter (14.9 ounces) than its predecessor, the StreetPilot III. And while its 256-color screen is slightly smaller (3.3 by 1.7 inches) than that of its older sibling, the 2620 offers touch-screen technology for easy page and menu selection and an automatic backlight dimmer that adjusts the display according to available light. The crisp, clear display is easily viewed from any angle.

Housed in a metallic-silver casing built to IPX7 standards (which means it can withstand accidental immersion in one meter of water for up to 30 minutes), the 2620 includes an integrated 12-channel WAAS (Wide Area Augmentation System)-enabled receiver and patch antenna, four backlit function buttons (Page, Menu, Find, and Speak) to the right of the display, and a remote-control IR sensor to the left. A power switch is located on the right rear of the unit and a CompactFlash slot, which houses the included 2.2GB Magicstor hard drive, is located behind a flip-up panel on the left rear side. A mini-USB port and an external antenna jack are positioned on the rear beneath a waterproof flap.

Road safety: The StreetPilot comes with a remote unit and both a bean-bag mount and a dashboard mount for a smoother ride.

We were generally pleased with the bean-bag-style mounting apparatus, which allows you to swivel the unit vertically and horizontally for an optimal viewing angle, although it tends to slide around a bit on a curved dashboard. Adding a few more beans would help stabilize the mount when driving on rough or winding roads. Garmin also includes a dashboard mount, and although we weren't able to test this unit, it provides you with an alternative means of installing the 2620 in your car. In addition to the two mounts, you get a 12-volt power adapter with a built-in speaker and an AC adapter for home use, a USB cable for upgrading firmware (when necessary) and updating the mapping software (via a fee-based CD-ROM) as new maps become available, and a wireless remote unit. The remote is particularly handy, allowing you to scroll through menu screens and perform search functions using the alphanumeric keypad rather than the onscreen touchpad.

As with Magellan's Roadmate 700, the Garmin StreetPilot 2620 is ready to use out of the box and requires no additional downloading or programming. In the past, Garmin's in-car navigators included street-level maps for a single district; additional maps could be unlocked and downloaded for a fee. However, the StreetPilot 2620 comes preprogrammed with base maps for major roadways and interstates and MapSource City Navigator detailed maps (for street-level navigation) for North America or Europe, which are stored on the tiny, 2.2GB CompactFlash drive.

The StreetPilot contains all the usual vehicle navigation features we've come to expect from a device in this class, including voice- and text-guided driving directions; the ability to create and store up to 50 routes using specific addresses or more than 5 million POI, a trip computer with an odometer, a timer, and a speed gauge, and storage for up to 500 customizable waypoints. When you're using the touch screen, the function buttons, or the wireless remote handset, the intuitive user menu lets you search for streets, addresses, cities, and popular attractions; customize map detail and colors; zoom in and out of maps; measure the distance between two points; and plan trips using multiple routes. For example, if you have several stops along the way, the StreetPilot will sort through the various destinations and calculate the most efficient route to take. You can even tell the device to avoid certain roadways if you know there will be construction or rush-hour traffic jams or to avoid major highways altogether for a more scenic drive.

We always have high expectations when testing Garmin GPS devices, and the StreetPilot 2620 didn't disappoint. Installing the StreetPilot couldn't be easier: Simply plug in the 12-volt adapter, position the bean-bag mount in a convenient location for viewing, and hit the power switch. We acquired a 3D fix (four satellites) in less than 30 seconds and were ready to roll. In fact, we lost satellite reception only twice on a road trip that took us from the canyons of Manhattan to the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania. Both times we were in a tunnel, where satellite tracking is virtually impossible using commercial GPS receivers. The receiver tracked our location accurately, and both the voice- and text-based driving directions were spot-on, alerting us to upcoming turns and quickly recalculating our route when we veered off course.

Top Notch Performer Back in its hey-day

Pros: Very powerful GPS receiver, remote control functionality, Easy to understand menus

Cons: No More Map Updates from Garmin, Speech control does not identify street names, no battery power option

Review: Back in its day, this was the best consumer automotive GPS unit around. Extremely reliable, this unit has never had any problems in the 4+ years I have owned it. Satellite reception holds even in downtown metropolitan areas in the midst of skyrise structures.

Unfortunately, map updates from Garmin have been discontinued on this model. The final update was City Navigator 2009.

BEWARE!!!!

Pros: Good screen, many options

Cons: DO NOT UPDATE!!!!

Review: Spring 07: tried to upgrade SP 2620 to maps v. 8 - in spite of 4 months trial and 20 Emails to tech support it never worked...
Summer 07: Sent SP 2620 to Garmin with CD-ROM v. 8 to have new maps installed
Fall 07: Got SP 2620 back with hard drive instead of CF-card (without CD-ROM) - it worked for two weeks, then broke down.
Nov. 07: sent defective SP 2620 to Garmin - got 2610 with 128 MB CF card back - returned it immediately to Garmin
Feb 08: After 4 months got a SP 2610 with a 2 MB card - tried to install software V7 - because Garmin kept my V8 - no chance

You need about a million and half different codes that either don't exist, or if they exist are outdated, or don't work with version 7, or don't work with 2610, or are on a yellow paper that wasn't included...

I give up - I put everything where it belongs: In the TRASH CAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I

Excellent Devuce

Pros: Provides excellent voice and visual guidance

Cons: Had minor difficulties downloading upgrades

Review: Would recommend this device to any one suffering from visual problems such as Macular Degeneration. Invaluable for driving to locations where street signs are either non exsistent or lettering small. Have used it for close to 3 years.

Easy to use, finds everything I needed

Pros: Easy to use interface

Cons: Wish the map updates were less expensive

Review: Owned mine for about 9 months. It took a little learing to figure out the user interface however once learned it's great. Unlike some I have found it to be very accurate, so far it hasn't given me any incorrect directions.

First trip I took with it we went to a town we had never visited and found the GPS invaluable not only for directions but on tips on where to buy gas, find the meals we were in the mood for and keep track of how many miles we had driven.

I use it for work too, to get directions and keep track of milage so I can get re-embursed accurately.

Also I have found updating the firmware extremely easy and have upgraded the maps to V8.0 which found a number of new business's and freeway changes in my area.

Overall I'm very pleased and would buy again.

excellent gps

Pros: large databank of addresses

Cons: bulky, poor connector

Review: I had this product for one year and initially i was dissapointed, i was planning on giving it away. it was worthless. However, after one year, i decided to upgrade the operating software. Now the unit performs flawlessly, far more useful than the older gps built into my bmw. Sadly, this means there is very little quality control at garmin. No one apparently tests the product before shipping. i suspect i am not the only person who has had this problem. The unit is also very big. I find this gps most useful when i travel (by plane) to other cities. It works great wherever i go, but, the size makes it an unpleasant carry on. i would suggest purchasing the garmin nuvi.

Don't buy this product

Pros: OK when it works

Cons: Absolutely abysmal service

Review: When a company does not even have the resources to sell you a product you know something is seriously wrong. An example: I tried to both phone purchase a software update for my Garmin 2610. After being put on hold for over an hour I gave up. Then I tried several e-mails but only got form letter answers. Note, I was not trying to get a repair but was actually trying to make a purchase. If this is how they treat would be paying customers than you can only guess how they will treat you if, for instance, you want a repair. This is a company that one should STEER CLEAR OF. As for the product itself, many units have severe defects; most notably they fail to find satellite reception. When it does work it is ok, but one simply can’t count on it to work and contacting the company is just about impossible.

Garmin 2620 is a user's horror

Pros: Has many bells and whistles

Cons: Unintelligible owner's manual, very user unfriendly

Review: I have yet to make this gps work. I found the manual all but worthless. I tried the indoor use for practice and never made it work. I tried it in a car and was told to drive 8,000 miles east. A friend has a 3-year old Magellan that a child can use. This Garmin is impossible. I am sorry that I ever bought it and would never recommend it.

good for an expensive compass

Pros: good interface, great when it works

Cons: The two things required by a gps are lacking- the search feature is sub par and the maps are missing areas

Review: The user interface is easy to use, easy to learn. If you actually get it set up to give you directions it is great. It gives you audio, tells you when to change lanes, everything. However, it has 2 major flaws that make it no more useful then an $800 compass. For one the search feature sucks. You can either search for a street and then wade through many cities (and hope you typed it exactly as the Garmin has it in its memory because if you didn't trust me it wont find a dam thing) or you can search by city but you can not search for a street in a city. Also the search is not forgiving at all. What I mean is if you type first avenue but the gps has 1st avenue it will not find it. So it must be typed exactly as Garmin has it programed to find it; so it requires several tries to find a location, that is if it is even in there map database. The map that it came through with stock (version 6) has nearly no locations available. And I am talking about places that have been on other maps for over 50 years, not new developments. So I went to the Garmin website and for version 7 of the maps they want an additional $150! So I said I'm not spending another 150 on the expensive compass unless it will actually make it work as advertised so I called Garmin on two separate occasions I was immediately placed on hold without speaking to an operator and sat there for over a half an hour until I finally had to hang up. So I finally emailed them to ask if the new maps would correct this issue. I have yet to hear back from them.
In all honesty, if the search function worked properly and the maps were more complete this would be a great product. But those are really the two most important features of a gps aren't they? I mean really what good is a gps if it can't find any locations? Woopi it can tell me what road I am currently on and my speed, I can get that by looking at my speedometer and the street signs.

Never located those satellites

Pros: None- Bad product.

Cons: never located satellites, clock was never on time.

Review: I spent one hour in my car listening to 1010 WINS, waiting for this damn thing to locate satellites. It never did. I drove around my town for half of that time. Nothing ever happened.

Garmin wasn't helpful either. They did offer to replace it, but I'm not spending another minute with their subpar products.

Totaly awsome after one year

Pros: All around usage, great for nationwide travel

Cons: Could use a larter top to botton screen.

Review: I have had this Garmin 2620 for little over a year, and I can't believe how I traveled without it? Quick response, just a few seconds to reculate when off route. Excellent costumer support, after sending in my unit to get fixed, Garmin lost my unit. They sent me a brand new 2620 2 days later; with the updated software.
Traveling around the country and changing address about every 13 weeks. The Garmin 2620 has been the best travel partner that I could have ever invested in. The 2620 has been so reliable and has everything that I need for nationwide taveling, I feel that there is no need to upgrade to newer modes like the 2720.

top notch GPS for anyone who is on the road

Pros: clear directions, usually very acurate, recalculates directions quickly if you miss a turn

Cons: tricky to program at first.

Crushing disappointment

Pros: Great "potential"

Cons: Hasn't fulfilled "potential'

Review: I have the new 2720. Satellite signal acquisition is absolutely pathetic. My car's radio antenna is built into windshield which may cause interference, but was initially told by Garmin tech support external antenna for 2720 was unnecessary. After continued reception problems, bought it anyway (another $80). Unit STILL will not connect with satellite unless I place antenna outside car on top of roof! Not what I had in mind. Maybe I have a lemon...maybe there is an acceptable solution. But right now, I have a $1000 paperweight.

Pros: Easy to use, works right out of the box, good purchase

Cons: Expensive, bulky form, expensive to update maps

Review: I am a newbie to GPS systems. I researched for a while before deciding on the 2620.

Garmin's Grand Slam

Pros: User friendly, easy to use, great road companion

Cons: Price hefty for upgrades to maps

Review: Anyone who travel's and has to read a map should own the 2620. Accurate and very reliable. I travel on business trips and take it to use in rentals and the 2620 hasn't failed me yet. From D.C. to San Diego and back to the heart of Florida. It saves my wife time just traveling in down town Jacksonville. Bottom line don't leave home with out it.

Great Product!!

Pros: Accurate, Complete, and User Friendly

Cons: No 3D View, Expensive

Review: I bought the 2620 after returning my Magellan and this was the right move. This unit is ready to go right out of the box. The interface is very intuitive and I was able to master most of the functions without looking at the manual at all. At times I didn't believe that routes the machine was suggesting were really faster, but they were much faster. I think that 3D view that some of the GPS units provide is really cool, but that is a minor point. I don't miss it at all.

Awesome product...when I have reception

Pros: Great mapping in Bay Area, bean bag really does a good job + easy to stash from site and remote control is great addition.

Cons: Drop reception about 25-40% of the time

Review: Use it for my outside sales job on the Peninsula, always lose reception by San Carlos/San Mateo area and is spoty in San Francisco. It is kinda of hilarious to sometimes see the GPS go off to never never land when it makes it look like I am driving in the middle of the bay, other times it makes me really annoyed when I need to be some where and do not have time to laugh it off. Other than spoty reception, when it works it is pretty cool how well it works. Looking at getting the external antenna for it to see if that helps out with reception issue. Would be curious to know if there are any other Bay Area users having same reception issue.

Good but not that good

Pros: Easy to use interface and solid construction and auto rerouting

Cons: Poor maps, no expansion, costly maps and updates

Review: I was excited to get this GPS after taking long trips using either my Magellan color handheld or my PDA with Delorme software. It was nice to have all the maps on one unit without having to connect to a computer every time. That is the greatest bennefit to this device. It has all of the USA in one unit. There is no need to connect to a computer. The autoreroute feature is nice. On my Magellan Meridian I had to manually tell it to reroute.

Now for the bad. The maps are not very accurate. The unit could not find my home even though it has been here for over 30 years. Garmin tech support was able to confirm this issue. I have read other people have had this problem. I told tech suppor that after spending $750 I should be able to trust the unit to tell me where to go. Here are just a few of the errors within in a mile of my house:

Service Merchandise store closed 5 years ago - still listed as there and open
Black Eyed Pea franchise was owned by someone linked to Al Queda and closed just after 9-11-01 and is still listed as open.
Wal-Mart built 5 years ago isn't shown
Wal-Mart built 4 years ago isn't shown
Resturant that closed 5 years ago still shown.
Bank built 6 years ago not shown
None of the homes on my street can be found.
Outback Steakhouse built 10 years ago not shown
Walgreens pharmacy shown but CVS across the street not shown even though built at same time.

These are just a few (yes there are more) errors within 1 square mile of my house. I asked Garmin tech support how could I trust a device when I am 1000 miles from home when I can't even trust it 1 mile from home.

Also, some people have talked about PDA GPS systems. I have one and it is not perfect either plus it is a hassle to load the maps you want cause a PDA won't allow you to load a large region.

Honestly the best option is a notebook comptuer and bluetooth GPS. The maps are cheaper and more up to date. But this option is not as portable.

I am stuck with the Garmin cause I can't return it but I definitely will not depend on it solely. Garmin needs to publish a more reasonable map update.

Excellent product

Pros: Easy to use, detailed maps.

Cons: Insane cost of updates.

Review: The more I use it, the more I like it. My wife and I like to get off the beaten path. With the StreetPilot we can go which ever way looks interesting and not have to worry about getting lost.
The purchase price is steep but I got a factory refurbished unit from getfeetwet.com for under $600. They even gave us a second year on the warranty at no cost.
The $150 for the map updates is something to take into consideration.

Pros: Fast, accurate, lots of details (time and distance to next turn, ETA, speed, elevation, etc)

Pros: Great Right of the Box, Durable, Easy to Use

Great product in spite of shortcomings!

Pros: Unbelievable detail, ability to find the nearest gas or lodging and provide phone numbers so you can check for room availability without getting off the highway.

Cons: Absurd price of map updates, given the high initial price already paid. The great beanbag mount needs a tackier underside for more grip.

Review: I am impressed by the many capabilities of this product. Yes it can produce some less than optimum routings, and it will occasionally try to send you the wrong way on a one way street, or via a dead end street. However the positives far outweigh the negatives. The map updates amount to highway robbery (pun intended) When one pays $700 to $900 for a tool, the blades should not cost $150. As a result, I haven't upgraded for two years. Cut the cost by 90% and I'll upgrade every time. Provide a 5-year upgrade subscription for $150, and far more owners would "join". Instead the high cost generates ill will, and drives customers away.

Very user friendly

Pros: Easy to use; easy to see; remote is very handy; the beginner will have no problems getting up and running

Cons: The mapping software is sometimes "off" which can be annoying (See narrative)

Review: I purchased the 2610 (which is the same thing except that I have to download the maps; this unit comes with maps preloaded) and I am extremely pleased with it. It is easier to use and the features are top notch. I would take this one over the Magellan 700 anyday. The only gripe I have is that sometimes if a highway is newly built and is off the "route" the speaker will continually chant "off-course; rerouting" which can be annoying but it only happens once a while. This is a very good GPS system and I wholeheartedly recommend it over anything Magellan has put out.

Great Unit!

Pros: Easy to read, easy to use, easy routes, great detail

Cons: Very sensitive to vibration

Review: I bought one of these to replace a Magellan Meridian Gold and the difference was like night and day. This unit was very easy to use, easy to mount in the car, and an all around awesome device. However, I wanted to use it on my motorcycle also, and discovered shortly into my trip that the unit does not like vibration at all. Unless you have a larger touring motorcycle that isn't a v-twin (take note Road King & Ultra Classic riders), don't buy this for use on a motorcycle. Go with the 2610.

Pros: I previously owned a StreetPilot III and was very happy. I purchased the 2620 because of the touchscreens ease of use. I loved the product, however their was one very major drawback that forced me to return it.

Cons: VERY POOR street level addresses. The Navtech maps leave alot to be desired. The very first address I entered was not found. Then a total of half of the next ten attempts came back as not found. I need to find addresses several times a day with my bus

Better than more expensive ones

Pros: I have a new 350Z with factory navigation and bought this one for my wife on her car. I love the touch screen, the accuracy, the additional features that come with it and actually prefer this over the $2000 option I had to pay to install it on my new car.

Cons: A bigger screen if I really had to pick on something, but that would have made the unit heavier and maybe slid on the dash.

Pros: Owned 2610 before this and I like the ability to have the entire US on a disk instead of loading portions of the country with my computer. Once I turned it on and the voice did not work, after shutting it down and waiting a few minutes the voice came back
