Excellent

The goodThe good: The Jensen VM9511TS is an all-singing, all-dancing head unit that gives myriad media-playback options, including MP3, WMA, DVD, satellite radio, and a cool dedicated iPod interface.

The badThe bad: The VM9511TS's manifold capabilities don't include USB-compatibility, and users must deploy the screen for anything more complex than tuning the radio. The lack of a removable faceplate makes it more vulnerable to theft.

The bottom lineThe bottom line: With its wide selection of media source inputs, the Jensen VM9511TS is a high-water mark for aftermarket stereo head units. Its separate media module takes up a lot of space, and at $800, it's pricey for an off-the-shelf system. Still, it blows factory-installed options out of the water in terms of value.

The Jensen VM9511TS does about everything an in-car media receiver could possibly do. From its ability to play nearly every modern audio-format (including MP3, WMA, XM Satellite, and AM/FM radio and SD-card files), to its crisp DVD playback via a 7-inch widescreen monitor, to its TV reception and ability to act as a giant iPod, this is one heady head unit. Like the Jensen VM9510TS, its older sibling, the VM9511TS has two display interfaces. One is a blue, backlit dot-matrix LCD display, which is visible only when the unit is in stowed-away mode. The other is a pop-up TFT touch-screen that emerges from its single-DIN body with the whirr of a motor.

In stowed-away mode, the unit looks like a fairly commonplace stereo receiver--the subtle presence of an SD card slot is the only clue to its uberfunctionality. Even in regular, single-DIN configuration, there is still little to point toward the VM9511TS's usability. Two joystick knobs on either end of the faceplate and six preset buttons can be used to control the tuner and to navigate CDs, but there are no markings for the standard audio controls (play/ pause/ skip/ search). Users will have to experiment with the right-hand joystick to work out how to skip or pause tracks. (We found that pushing it upwards sometimes had the effect of pausing the CD, and sometimes it didn't.)

The backlit LCD display provides only track number and playing time for CDs, and no ID3 information is shown for MP3 or WMA CDs. But these gripes are mere bagatelles--with a press of the "open" button, the true character of the VM9511TS begins to emerge.

A cluster of logos on the bottom of the touch screen reveals an array of features about this receiver. It can handle MP3s, WMAs, CDs, DVDs (video and R/W), and auxiliary inputs. It is "Made for iPod" and is XM-Satellite ready. It plays audio in Dolby Digital Pro-Logic II at 60 watts per each of its four channels. And that's not all. A glance at the VM9511TS's standalone media module (through which it outsources all its media connections) shows that it can be hooked up to a TV antenna (included with the unit), as well as Jensen's Nav 100 car navigation system (sold separately). Also compatible is Jensen's optional iAux-3 module, which enables the connection of any portable MP3 player via an auxiliary jack and ports for composite audio and video.

Those who are going to invest in the Jensen VM9511TS multimedia receiver will have to set aside a day to install it. We connected the system to up to four main speakers, but there are also dedicated RCA cables to hook up an additional six speakers via an external amplifier, including a subwoofer and two rear surround-sound speakers. Other connections include provision for wireless headphones, two additional rear screens and a back-up camera connected via the reverse gear in the shifter.

Perhaps the most innovative feature of the Jensen VM9511TS is its dedicated iPod interface, which allows all iPod models to be connected and played via the head unit while simultaneously being recharged. With our iPod Nano connected in audio mode, controls on the MP3 player itself were disabled. Control of all functions devolved to either a virtual iPod dial on the touch screen (our preferred interface) or one of two remote controllers.

The Jensen VM9511TS enables users to control iPods using a dedicated touch-screen interface.

Using the touch screen's wheel, users can select play lists, artists, albums, or songs in a similar fashion to using the iPod itself. Using the remote control is a little less intuitive and requires reference to the manual to establish that the forward search button activates the iPod menu screen and the skip buttons scroll through the options.

One bug that we found with the iPod interface was that the unit sometimes failed to recognize our iPod when we plugged it in--a problem that we finally remedied by pushing the reset button on the side of the media module.

The video features on the VM9511TS are impressive. The unit has a versatile 16-position tilting screen, and it offers video playback in a range of aspect ratios, including standard 4 x 3, widescreen 16 x 9, and "cinema" configurations. Picture quality is good for DVDs, although we had difficult getting a clear TV picture with the 16-inch rabbit-ear antennae, despite being on the 5th floor in a static office building; getting a clear episode of Oprah will prove to be even more trouble when on the move. A secondary tuner module enables the VM9511TS to be hooked up to a cable or satellite signal. One surprising omission in the VM9511TS's arsenal is its lack of a USB port--perhaps there was just not enough room on Jensen's assembly line to add another function.

The principal drawbacks with the Jensen VM9511TS are logistical rather than related to its functionality. First, car owners will need a lot of spare real estate in their dashboards to accommodate this unit: The additional media module takes up nearly as much space as a standard single-DIN unit by itself. Second, the VM9511TS does not come with a removable faceplate, so all its megafunctionality is accessible to screwdriver-wielding car thieves. One redeeming point of security for the VM9511TS is that it will take any would-be thief at least 10 minutes to disconnect the dozens of wires and cables holding the unit in place, but that is not an adequate substitute for a removable faceplate.

Despite these gripes, the VM9511TS is a high-end media receiver that will open up a world of in-car media options for those willing to take the time to install it.

I loved my VM9511TS unit / TV Tuner was great for emergencys and when the power was outages 4 weeks

Pros: The TV Tuner helped me out through the Hurricanes, power outage for 2 months, while traveling the local accidents that block local road ways. even had a hook to my house from it.

Cons: that i dont have one in all my cars and owed a few more of this units.

Review: My unit was ship off to be worked on and i was told couldn't be fixed. i'm very sad that i haven't found a unit as good as the VM9511TS Jensen unit. Circuit City Don't sell anymore of these units and it sad they don't have anything or produce any other type stero that can match the price / as good as this unit. The other units don't even match up to the Jensen VM9511TS. THIS IS VERY SAD FOR TODAYS TECHNOLOGY.

Great All-N-One Unit!!

Pros: iPod integration/ TV tuner built-in/MultiZoning for front/rear passengers

Cons: The Jensen NAV100 (optional Navigation add-on) is discountiued. No CD changer compatibility

Review: Unit has awesome sound quality (5.1 Dobly Digital) once you have an understand of how it works. Some features are not as user-friendly as they should be, for instance the menu features of the Sound Processing. There are several sound configurations as well as adjusting the center and subwoffer channels directly from the headunit. The TV Turner has pretty good reception. Player DOES read DVD-R/+R Rewritables with MP3 format. I made a disc containing over 600 MP3 with titling and the unit handled it well however, allot the unit 2 minutes to initialize once the disc is inserted. The Ipod integration is awesome! Once the Ipod is adapted to the unit, you can control via touchscreen on the unit to control the media right off of the Ipod! Neat, huh? After doing some research for the navigation, I have discovered that the Jensen NAV100 which happens to be the optional add-on for nagivation, has been discontinued and replaced with the Jensen NAV101. The NAV101 is not compatible at all to the VM9511TS. Luckly the VM9511TS has 2 Aux inputs where an user can purchase a universal Navigation unit. The unit has a MultiZone. This feature allows front passengers to listen/watch the media while the rear passengers listen/watch different media. This unit is a great setup especially for families/carpoolers, yet a must-have for the single driver who'd like to use as a show stopper.

Great Stereo packed with features!

Pros: Media compatability, $Price$, Ease of Installation, XM Ready, iPod Ready, Good power, User Friendly U/I, Remote Control, Nice Display, Hackable Brake Wire Codes available,

Cons: Non-detachable faceplate, iPod interface only plays back alphabetically, length of media cable for installation in trunks!

Review: I have the Phase Linear version of this exact radio. For those who dont know who P.L. is...they are the sister company of Jensen with the exact same product lines. They are warrantied by Jensen too!
I think these units are abolutely stellar for the price range and actually offer much more than comparably featured units with much higher price tags.
I have installed this radio into my Alfa Romeo Spider with a 1200 watt 5 Channel Amp, 1 - 12" Subwoofer, 2 - 6x9 Sony Speakers and 4 - 5.25 Sony Speakers and could not be happier with its performance. I also added the XM radio for about $60 + $200 for the subscription.
The unit is very nice and the screen is very sharp and vibrant! The touch screen controls are very well laid out and sensitive to touch commands. The response times (probably due to fewer clock cycle speeds of the actual processors) is a little sluggish at times but from what I have read about other much more expensive models they are all about the same anyways. This technology is far from perfect and I suspect that all cars will be standard with something like this by 2010. Expect drastic improvements in touch screen controls over the next few years.
There are a few things to learn and I wouldn't try learning to manipulate any controls while driving. I don't want my kids (or yours) to get hit by a driver that was paying attention to their radio over the safety of people in the streets. Go sit inside your garage, grab a beer, and learn your new radio BEFORE you drive around showing it off...because there is a lot to learn!
I was provided a Jensen override code used by engineers to program the codes before the radios are shipped. Using it, I blindly hacked (meaning I never connected the infamous "Pink Wire" to my brake therefore had no screen to view any chages from) the radio's security features so that I can view DVDs driving down the freeway if I wanted to do so. The truth is, I only have that feature turned on so my passengers (uh, wife) can view a movie when we're driving because I certainly dont want to take my eyes off the road one second here in Ft. Lauderdale! Since I dont have a back seat to allow passengers to sit in the back and "legally" view a movie from another monitor, I chose to hack the system with a code sequence designed to bypass the programmed security feature. doing this changes the DVD Region code to ALL instead of just Region 1 (or whatever corresponds to your country). This means that I can play all the bootlegged DVDs from China too...if I had them, I mean! This system plays DiVX, AVI, and DVD. I was very pleased with the video...crisp, good sound, and good resolution.
I dont use the iPod adapter and probabaly won't because I can create a gigaDVD with all of the MP3's I want and be alright with that. From what I have seen on my sisters radio though (same model), the iPod plays all of the songs in a user-created playlist and sorts them in the U/I in alphabetical order even though they aren't set up that way in the iPod itself. Meaning, if you want to listen to a song that starts with a letter Z, be prepared to scroll through EVERY song title to get to it! Imagine going through 80GB of music manually! I feel they should shoot the engineer that came up with that stupid bit of code!
There is a separate "Brain" that accompanies the actual Single Din unit and it makes installation a bit more tedious, the unit a bit more bulky, and wiring a bit more complex (did I mention more expensive if you have someone else install it?) but is still very simple to do yourself. This additional brain CANNOT be mounted in the trunk or rear speaker box (if you have one like I do) because the media wire is just too short...and I even drive one of the smallest 2 seaters ever made! Most people install the brains under the dash or passenger seat due to this drawback but if you own a convertible, the first thing we do is PROTECT OUR STUFF so I knocked points off my review for Jensen's oversight. Its funny though, the universal XM tuner comes with a 20 foot cable but understand this...the XM box plugs into the Brain, which makes 19 feet of its cable useless.
Other noteworthy mentionables...these units are in severe need of detachable faceplates. I made a fiberglass cover to make it appear from the outside as if a faceplate was already removed so that when I exit the vehicle, I just place it over the existing face and it looks like the stereo is detached. My creation will be available on eBay soon for $30.00 as soon as I run off about 100 molds and sign/secure the necessary patents.
Also, the car industry is too locked into blue LED for everything now. I dont mind blue and actually like it but I like options more than a color and would prefer that the backlights of the radio come with more color options to suit the taste and theme of the car. I own a RED/Black car and the ONLY blue thing in it is this radio at night. Red/Green/White LED would have been a nice touch for almost little change in the cost of manufacturing or MSRP!

Great Product!! Cant Beat The Options & Price!!

Pros: All the Different option .. Plays IPOD Great

Cons: No Nav Unit Yet!! As of 12/6/06

Review: Great Product!! I was a little scared of a Jensen CD Player for $550.00 (Car Dommain).
It has everything great for ipod.tv tuner works well. I can get 3 to 10 channels any given day. Look around on the Interweb to find how to "install" it is very helpful!!
As far as insatll couple hours just alot of wires and hinding the "brain unit" is a little tough but not bad. Everything on the Jensen VM9511TS works good I would recommened this to anyone looking for a a good product with alot of options.. NO USB though if your looking for that it does not have one though. But it does have AUX. RCA's. I give it a B only beacause the Nav Unit is not out yet. and the controls are a little touchy, bui i can live with it..

people leaving bad ratings

Pros: every one who has one likes it including me.

Cons: people who dont have one

Review: It is very interesting to see that every one who has left this product a bad rating has not said any thing about owning it, thats because they don't. CNET is not asking people to rate the brand or it's history, they are asking you to rate this specific product. You should not leave bad reviews if you have not even purchase this product. Don't be sad and upset just because you guys dumped all your money on another product that does less than this one does. You people are a bunch of idiots, buy something before you rate. I am rating this product a 10 to try to offset all the Jack ***** who gave this product less than 5.

Small Mighty Unit!!!

Pros: Plenty of features, Bang for your buck

Cons: Static on TV tuner when moving

Review: I never would think i would put a Jenson product in my suv however after careful consideration and stats on this unit it was a no brainer. The touch screen dvd/tv, rear cam, on screen ipod controls plus nav. You can't touch it.

EXCELLENT!!

Pros: IT HAS EVERYTHING I WANT , in a really good price,

Cons: SD card reader everytime u turn on ur stereo starts from the beginning

Review: well i owned this product, paid 600 for it , and so far i've been so happy with it,at the beginning i was a little aware because it was a jensen, but now i know i did the smartest choice, love their ipod and mp3 formtas, perhaps the only thing i dont like about it is the sd card reader like i already mentioned, so if u want QUALITY AND PRICE this is the choice u need to get, dont just go over brand names, u will ended up paying more for less.

Both the VM9021TS and VM9511TS are outstanding

Pros: Support nearly every format and media, TV tuner and Ipod controll bundled

Cons: No Sirius tuner, main remote buttons too small

Review: I have been installing car stereo systems since the early 80s(only for myself and friends). I have owned many brands from Kraco to Eclipse. I have also owned several flip-out and in-dash mutlimedia systems. I have owned 4 Eclipse, 3 Pioneer, and now a Jensen. The feature set and compatibility of the Jensen is second to none. I used to be of the Jensen=junk crowd. I first noticed the VM9511TS at Circuit City. When I looked at what it offered I was amazed. I decided to take a leap of faith and give Jensen a shot.

I prefer double-din installations so I ended up buying the VM9021TS. It offers pretty much what the VM9511TS does.

The most amazing thing to me is the built-in amp is definately up to the task of powering full-range speakers well enough to keep up with amp powered subs. I guess CEA 2006 power ratings are more realistic. I have 2 MTX Thunder 4500 12" subs running off of a JL 500/1 and the HU has no trouble keeping the full range speakers up to par with them. I do plan on installing some MB Quart PSD216 6.5" components in the near future. At that point I'll install a 4-channel amp.

The most surprising thing for me is the sound quality is very good. The pre-outs have good output and provide a clean signal to the amps.

The HU controls are more than adequate and there are many things that are so much better thought out than any Pioneer or Eclipse system I have owned. The ability to establish a preset turn-on volume is one of those features. The multi-zone setup and source select screens are well layed out and easy to read. The MP3 screen is very informative. The iPod control is unprecedented. The ability to display Photos and Videos on the screen is a huge step forward in iPod to car integration. I really think that Audiovox has stepped it up a notch with the current Jensen line.

The only real complaint I have is the XM support is not nearly as good as the iPod support is. The text for song and artist does not scroll and does not show the full text. In addition, the preset text is too small and makes it hard to select the channel from the touch screen. A Sirius option would be good as well. I also think that Audiovox should have required Circuit City to offer the NAV100 as a package. As it is now, you have to get the NAV100 module from somewhere other than Circuit City.

In summary, I have to admit I was extremely skeptical of buying a Jensen product. They have been very bad for a long time. If Audiovox continues along the path they are taking Jensen right now there will only be good things to come. I challenge anyone to find a comparably priced system that matches the Jensen products feature for feature.

Its Just Alright

Pros: the price was right, and thats it

Cons: it acts like its price, cheap

Review: i wanted to give it a trial run. Two weeks and the thing is already broken. The buttons dont work the actually unit, the screen opens and closes on its own, it randomly changes into different GQs. It only works with the remote and then it goes back to doin its own thing. My music randomly stops and starts again. Until i can get it uninstalled im riding around in silence. I hate it, im tired of it, im goin back to my pioneer head-unit.
It also had very poor crossover options, i couldnt quite get it to sound as good as my pioneer. However it did sound good, but not great.

I like it!

Pros: Many options for inputs, good video resolution and very nice sound with my MB quart amp. Single din design is perfect for my car.

Cons: I wish it had a removable face plate!

Review: I like this unit and everyone complains about jensen but I have not had any bad issues out of this unit.Picture quality is good sound is good, its not hard to learn the functions. I own it and like it!

Good product

Pros: Not too bad a learning curve required, many features.

Cons: Placement, FM stations, and the media module

Review: When I first bought this product, I was VERY skeptical. I thought this product would be total crap, but the guy at the audio store insisted that this would make me happier than the pioneer system that I was also looking at that was almost the same price. My only first gripe was the placement. In my Audi A4, the unit sticks about 1/2 an inch out of the dash. This makes it look incredibly ugly when the screen is not up. When the screen is up, however, it looks great. The unit doesn?t interfere with anything on the dash because of its weird placement. The FM stations in my car went to crap after this installation. This is said to be because of the antenna being placed inside the rear window of my car, and the radio not being able to pick up signal because of the smaller number of transistors in my new head unit compared to the stock one. I purchased an XM kit and couldn?t be happier. In response to ZZZED, I agree the screen takes a little bit of time to respond, but it is definitely bearable -maybe 2.5 seconds. In the ipod selection you can not scroll through the songs easily but can drag the sidebar through the amount of pages that have the content- takes a day to get used to, then can find most any song/artist in maybe 8 seconds. The ipod control did not work on ZZZED's customers unit most likely because the customer had the multi zone selection on, in order to have the ipod work, the multi zone selection has to be on standby (it took a while for me to find out why my ipod wasn?t working!). Overall, thus far, this head unit has been great. The screen looks good when scrolling through the menus, and great when watching videos. I would recommend people to at least consider this head unit when searching for a nice one, for it has many good features, as well as some bad ones.

So far pretty good system

Pros: under $1000

Cons: Can't find all componets, Remote quit working.

Review: I have had this system for three months. It has been a good System. The TV does not always show clear or pick up all channels. For some reason all the Spanish channels come in loud and clear. Wish I under stood spanish.

The DVD player shows clear, Cd plays fine. The remote is not working for some reason. I can't locate the XM or Navigation componets.

Can someone tell me where to find them? I would like to have the system working completely, then I could give a better review of the full system.

How many actually own this product?

Pros: Does everything I could want it to do.

Cons: People think its crap because its a Jensen and remote buttons are small.

Review: All the reviews so far are from people that just think everything is crap from Jensen, which I think is wrong. I have had the model vm9411 which is the same as the vm9511 except it isn't touch screen and the navigation module is not compatible. I have had many car stereo setups with JL, pioneer, and all the other name brands so I am aware of Jensen's reputation. I was very reluctant to purchase it as well because the name Jensen envokes thoughts of bad craftsmanship. I decided what the hell and purchased it anyway since I was looking for a in dash dvd below $1000.

The main thing that draw me too it was the price and that it supported the IPOD video. You can hook up your IPOD Video and watch all your videos through the ipod cable which is great. The screen is nice, the ipod integration is very easy to use and responsive, and it sounds good. The tv atenna doesnt really work that well as expected but you can always add a better antenna if watching tv is your deal.Ive had the unit for three months now and I couldnt be happier with it.

Please buy before reviewing

Pros: Lots of features

Cons: Potentially bad company, needs real reviews.

Review: Regardless of the company, first buy the actual unit and test it before posting negative reviews. This is not a review for a company, but rather for a product. If your not willing to buy it, don't review it.

Best ever? who is rating these things...

Pros: NONE... Cheep for your grandmother but only if you don't like her...

Cons: Ugly... Two remotes? why? Best ever should have one remote... and bluetooth..

Review: This is just another sad product from jensen...
I have been installing for awhile now, custom work too... also MECP certified...

I wouldn't sell this product to anyone.

you get what you pay for.

Pros: aesthetics, flip screen, features

Cons: poor quality, make, service, audio quality

Review: yeah it may be the best car stereo ever. If this is the only one youv ever researched or seen in your life. I have had 5 systems built into my Z and this product is a disgrace to the audiophile and car aftermarket stereo community. Listen to the other reviewers. Be safe and stick to Alpine. On the new SAT's a potential question/answer is: "alpine to jensen....as... answer would be....ferrari is to ford.

Made by Monkeys

Pros: It's not made of wood.

Cons: It's still made of cheap stuff.

wrong!!!!!

Pros: ipod control

Cons: cheesy......

Review: i am a professianal installer w/ 19 years experiance, and i can tell you first hand, that jenson screen sucks...i had a customer bring one in to install for him....2 days later he is back to have it removed- just very low quality and slow to operate, and the ipod part did not work at all.....stay with a real name brand, ie alpine, kenwood, pioneer.....
Updated
i just installed another one of these jokes, i forgot the other major gripe about it.....the screen does not slide out far enough on the bottom for the tilt mechanism to clear the dash above the radio in most cars....the end result is that the screen sits about vertical with the dash, not angled back so the driver can look directly at the screen....most good screen can adjust the "slide" in additon to adjusting the "tilt" .....please return to walmart......

I just lost all respect for CNETs car stereo reviews

Pros: Cheap, lots of features

Cons: Terrible quality

Review: Jensen makes low quality bargain basement equipment. To echo the previous review, no one who has any knowledge of the car audio world would ever touch this brand. This is the stuff you find on the shelves at Walmart.
