    "Not very good gps."

by juncman on November 13, 2006

Pros: good screen, good sound, easy to use, very good build quality, user replacable battery, sd mem slot, can play videos, music, and photos, has hard drive.

Cons: Does not display names of the streets on the streets. Only the street you are on at the top of the screen. Hard to see the screen during the day. (non-reflective coating is still very reflective), no

Summary: I did not like this gps. As a gps it is very poor. Only 8 sats at a time, and not a very sensitive receiver. You only need 3 sats to navigate, but if the device can not see them, then you are lost! Even under some trees it lost the gps signal. Then it got stuck twice when it had a clear view if the sky. The device gives only the basic gps info. The name of the streets you are on is displayed, and some (very few) cross streets. I live in a Los Angeles suburb and this device lost the signal four times on a simple drive. Under trees, under overpasses, near large buildings and once it just froze. I had to reset it. The newer SF-III receivers will get a signal in your house, near a window, not at the window, but near it. This will loose the signal under a tree!

As a music player it is cool. Although the device has a 20 GB HD, you can only use 5GB and of that you can only use 1GB for videos. It will play MP3, no problem, and the stereo speakers are not bad, petty loud and clear.

I could not get videos to play. Canā??t give much of an opinion other than that.

Photo viewing was fine. High res pictures were blurry, but 320x240 (screen native res) they looked good.

The mount is good and strong. The device does not come with an AC adapter, but you can use any PSP usb/AC cable as a home charger.

My big pet-peeve is that the device will not show street names on the streets themselves, so you do not know what the streets around you are. The gps is just not very good. Keep shopping around for another one. This is my 7th gps so far in the search for an inexpensive $399.00 is the limit. So I will be waiting for the next sale.
