    "Poor find functionality"

by Karthik Sankar on May 6, 2006

Pros: Bright Touch Screen, Custamizable, Navigation

Cons: Slow Processor, Poor Find functionality, Locks-up

Summary: I liked the configurability of this GPS. I can configure it to overlay many information like latitude, longitude, altitude, speed, time to destination, etc in the map screen. I liked the compass screen where it shows the trip information. The biggest drawback of this GPS, is its poor find design. Even when I keyed-in some simple address, it will take at-least 30 Seconds (hate the hour glass), to show the results. One time, I was trying to find a two word street name. Even after 4 mins it didn't come back. Then I have to reset the GPS. Also, when I search for intersection, it locks-up. For finding the points of interest data, the first few letters have to match. For example, I tried searching for zoo by spelling zoo. But it didn't find it. Since our zoo name is Cincinnati Zoo, it can only find it, if I type Cinci. Such a POI find is useless. Another serious drawback in find, I can find only around, and not on my route. Let say, I am driving on a highway and I want to find the next restarea in my route and search for restarea, it will even list restareas that are behind me. Lowrance have to improve a lot in their software. I checked with Lowrance support and they replied that they don't have any software release scheduled, but may come sometime this year. Also, the map data is couple of years old. In my opinion, find is very important. If I can't find an address, the GPS is useless. So, I returned this GPS it even with a 15% re-stocking fee. I will go with a Garmin model, which has an excellent find functionality.

If both the Garmin and Lowrance use the EXACT same data base how can the find functionality be that different? The both use the Navteq company for maping information. I guess the difference could be something like spell check, which seems like a bad idea for proper nouns? The functionality to bring up all names that match the search pattern could be useful it it's missing that.

I have had mine less than a week, but have used it on every trip, whether I knew where I was going or not. The find function I don't have a problem with, but the street address numbers seem to be off in the database. It has always found the address/street for me, but when it says I am "at destination", I have been as much as 1/4 mile down the road from the actual address. Other than that, I absolutely love the unit.
