Magellan Corporation, which introduced the first commercial handheld GPS receiver back in 1989, has entered the handheld add-on market with its GPS Companion for the Handspring Visor. Competitively priced, the GPS Companion brings navigation and street-level mapping capability to your Handspring Visor, without adding too much weight or bulk to your handheld.

Captivating color
Weighing in at 3.7 ounces with a size of 1.13 by 2.06 by 4.75 inches, the GPS Companion is not quite as sleek as Nexian's HandyGPS module, but with the added dimensions come added features and a ten-hour battery life (up to six hours more than the HandyGPS). Included in the package is the GPS module, which is a 12-channel receiver; a CD-ROM containing MAP Companion and NAV Companion software; and two AAA batteries. The GPS Companion slides into the Visor's expansion slot and initializes immediately. In our case, we tested it with a Visor Prism.

Right off the bat, we were impressed with the color maps. Unlike the HandyGPS or the Geode from GeoDiscovery, the GPS Companion takes full advantage of the Visor Prism's color display, providing icons such as familiar red or blue interstate markers and red crosses for hospitals. Other points of interest (such as golf courses; air, train, and bus terminals; shopping centers; and lodging) have colorful icons to mark their position on the map.

The included software is what we'd expect from Magellan. MAP Companion allows you to search for destinations, enable GPS scrolling and positioning, and switch between Map and GPS mode. In GPS mode, you can view the current latitude and longitude, the altitude, the bearing and speed of travel, as well as which satellites you are locked on to. The NAV Companion program provides the same information as the MAP Companion, plus the ability to create waypoints and routes, which can be beamed to other Palm handhelds. You can also create track logs that show where you've been and the distance, speed, and bearing of your trip, then convert those logs to a route for future reference. Perhaps the only missing feature is a digital compass screen, which is always a handy tool when traveling in unfamiliar territory.

Load 'n' lock
Getting started is relatively painless. We installed the necessary components from the MAP and NAV Companion CD using HotSync, loaded all of New York City's and Long Island's street maps (using only 1.4MB of memory, which is impressive) and the NAV program, and hit the highway. One downfall is that the GPS module takes about ten minutes to lock on to satellites on first use, but if you know your approximate coordinates, you can punch them in to reduce locking time significantly. We did this and obtained a 3D fix (four or more satellites locked in) within five minutes, with subsequent initializations taking less than a minute to achieve a fixed position.

We selected a destination from the drop-down list of street names in the Options menu (unfortunately, the GPS Companion will not locate addresses) and tracked our progress through the streets, with our positioning icon always pointing toward our destination. The GPS functionality was very accurate, pinpointing our location on the map right down to our position in the middle of an intersection. At one point, the receiver was even able to hold satellite signals indoors, as long as we stayed close to a window. If you plan on using the GPS add-on mostly in a car, we recommend purchasing the vehicle-mounting bracket ($42) for the Visor, which provides hands-free operation and map viewing while driving.

Even though the Magellan GPS Companion for the Handspring Visor lacks the ability to locate street addresses, this is a minor flaw in an otherwise fine and affordable ($149.99) product. As a matter of fact, we think this is one of the better GPS add-ons for a Palm OS device we have seen to date.

Does What I Need

Pros: Magellan Still Around, Works As Advertised

Cons: Ancient Compared To Newer GPS

Review: I am still very happy with this Magellan GPS module. There is still support on this legacy Companion product. Other Handspring GPS vendors have fallen by the wayside.

The software is adequate for what I use it for. Used in conjunction with a MemPlug module, I am able to keep Marcosoft maps with me to move/swap into Handspring internal memory.

The Handspring Magellan GPS combo gets me close, I either use a PC based map program for specific street addresses or a Palm TX in a WiFi zone and Google mobile maps for the last few miles.

I have yet to experiment with Delorme 2007 maps for Palm as internal memory requirements are overwhelming for a Handspring.

Cold satellite acquisition is quick and hot is very fast.

Great for geocaching.

Great price, Terrible product

Pros: Price!

Cons: None of the software included can get a satellite fix. Doesn't work in car. 2D is best reception ever received.

Depends on what you want.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: If you want to find addresses, this is not for you. Don't try to find intersections in LA area unless you know the exact city it is in. If you want to be able to define waypoints and return to the same area, NavComp works well, but you'll have to be there of have the Lat/Lon from another source. Also, cannot place user-defined waypoints directly on the map. I agree,"Awkward to go from Map companion maps to Nav Companion waypoint manager. The two should be integrated." Still, it has a lot of geek features.

A good deal, if you have a Visor.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Discontinued model is a great deal if you can find it. Wal-Mart clearance price was $49.95. Bundled software not so hot, and don't expect much support on Handspring module from Magellan.

Great for the money. Fair software.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Bought at Walmart for $79 for use on a Visor. Purchased US & Canada Platinum Plus CD from www.Mapopolis.com which made the unit perform much better with greater accuracy. The software even gives the approx. location of street addresses. It allows you to add locations for future use and allows you to search for hospitals, schools and other landmarks. I am very satisfied since adding different software to the unit. Wish I had more than 8 MB of memory though.

Great product. Does what I expected.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I recently purchased the Magellan GPS Comapnion and I have been well pleased with it. I get quick 3D fixes and accurate tracking. The software lacks a little in street mapping detail but I purchased Delormes Street Atlas USA and the GPS works great with it.

Good GPS lousy software

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I got this so I could make my waypoints into maps. I thought that with the 8mb in my visor I could store lots of waypoints. I can, but theres no good way to get those waypoints on to my computer. Magellan's support STINKS! I was told by one support rep "Oh yeah, it'll do that" and another said "No way" and gave me the software development kit... Are you listening Magellan? I'd actually PAY for some decent software/

don't buy if you live in hawaii

it is a toy - don't buy it

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This product has potential but the company doesn't provide good software with it, nor does there seem to be decent 3rd party software out there. What do I want? World-wide maps or country-by-country maps (but not to street level). Maps which are good enough to know more or less where you are - city level maps in other words.

Nice Product - Watch for use with Prism

Pros:

Cons:

Review: When I first tested the Companion, I was very impressed with the accuracy. I attached the unit to my Handspring Prism (color) and everything looked great! My only major issue is my palm's battery life when running the GPS ... I am only getting about 2hrs. I verified that other users of the mono Handsprings are getting much better results. Overall a rock-solid product.

Amazing potential, a few flaws

Pros:

Cons:

Review: GPS and maps on my visor? Great idea! Easy to use interface, and reasonable maps make this a good product. However, several software flaws are very obvious: 1) you cannot find or enter addresses 2) This is not a good tool for trip planning. There is no way to enter a 'route' except by Lat-Long, which isn't very useful for anything but hikes; (e.g., you can't use the maps to get Lat-Long) 3) the maps don't zoom in-out very well (sections of roads disappear, e.g.)

Best Springboard GPS!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Although it looks like just a product on Magellan's step-product shelf, it meets the challenge and performs great. Now, because of the delicate nature of the Visor, I wouldn't take this thing canoeing, but I do take it geocaching and it works great. If Magellan wants to make a 2nd generation, I would like to see features like: Compact Flash Piggy Back so I don't have to keep switching back and forth to get the maps I want in, software alliance with Mapquest instead of Qvardis, and WAAS support. I'd also like to see the price below $100. After all, anyone can get a good stand alone with the same functionality for $150 - and it's water resistant.

Great for Mac users!!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I found it really hard to find Mac supported gps software. Could be wrong but I think this is the only gps that works with mac. Works great under trees, in houses, and cars! Even though software is great for macs it isn't all that great for mapping and waypoints. Since it seems to drain batteries fast I have lost many waypoints because of battery drain. But over all I seem to always have a fix when other GPS units don't under thick tree cover! This is the most important for me!

Very satisfied once I found the right software

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I use mine mainly for my limo company. I tried using Delorme's software, bad support and way too hard to get maps with a $40 price tag. Then I found Rand McNally's Street Finder Deluxe. True the Companion's software does not provide street address', but I didn't buy it for that. At $29.95, Street Finder is the perfect companion. Highlight the area you want the map of roads in, and 2 minutes later it is in the Handspring. Street Finder needs a PC for use and an internet connection for point A to B maps, but all in all, I am considering getting the NEO/Companion/Street Finder set-up for my other driver.

A good competent product, but...

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Limited accuracy because it lacks WAAS support. Also, cannot place user-defined waypoints directly on the map. Awkward to go from Map companion maps to Nav Companion waypoint manager. The two should be integrated.

Get one. Best one on Market.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: One of the reasons I went with my Handspring rather than a Palm was the Springboard modules. This one makes it worthwhile. Got it at Staples on sales AND used a money-off coupon. What a deal!

this works and works well

Pros:

Cons:

Review: First of all this uses less battery power than any GPS device I have seen... The accuracy is also amazing... the only thing that could use improving is if it showed you the direction of travel on the map, currently it just shows an X where you are and while the update is about maybe even better than once a second, it would be nice if it showed an arrow as to the direction of travel
