  • "Ok for short routes. Unit resets when the route is long"

Pros: I have 2 garmins Nuvi's and decided to try the RoadMate. It's a very nice unit. Good features and display. I very easy to enter addresses and find POI. I like the turn now bell.

Cons: Unit is useless on long routes because it reset's whenever you try to enter one. Not talking 1500 miles either. Sometimes just 35 miles resets the unit. Mfg is aware and was supposed to have a S/W fix by May. I updated my S/W mid Aug, still resets.

Summary: If they can fix the glitch it will be a decent unit. It does some things (not all) better than the garmin. I'd stay away from this unit until they get it working though. Check their website. http://www.magellangps.com/support/faqdetail.asp?faqid=654&prodid=2177

I purchased a 1470 10 days ago. My Garmin had sent me on a few wild goose chases and I thought I'd give Magellan a chance. WRONG ANSWER! Worst thing it did was turn to the bright daytime display at 5:00 am. I was on a strange interstate going 70 so I didn't feel like trying to fix it.
The green road symbol. is very hard to see in sunlight. The Magellan site is NOT FRIENDLY TERRITORY. My unit was two years old when I bought it. Unbeknownst to me. "FREE" map update kept prompting me to buy a map update.
All the instructions I kept getting from the Magellan tech help are things my Garmin does automatically when I plug it into the computer. Duh.
IMO Magellan is not a good designer, nor a smart marketer (2-year-old unit on shelf) and I am returning this unit. I am going to try a Tom Tom or some other off brand just to see...
    Magellan? NEVER AGAIN!

Version 2.2 of the firmware seems to have basically taken care of the reboot problem. It still happens occasionally, but never during a actually routing.
