Pros Easy to read and easy to use. Finds address quickly. Easy to program addresses. This unit works very well. I do a lot of windshield time in a 2007 Ford 500 and I love the larger screen.
Cons It doesn't show you the speed limit of the road you are driving on. Some GPS units do this and that is handy. Other than that, there is nothing that I dislike about this unit.
Pros Size, mount I found sturdy, when set to max volume its very clear.
Cons Map accuracy is horrendous. There must be errors in their database for posted speedlimits resulting in forcing routes to stay on highways much longer. Updates are way behind. Battery life is way to short. Timers to autoshut off are too short too.
Summary My house is in a subdivision that has been around for 6 years. All I get are long and lat co-ord when I tell it to remember my home address. My in-laws house shows up as an address inside an amusement park (cause it has village in the name - no its not a real village.
Do not buy this. Posting an ad to sell it on Kijiji now. Hopefully someone is a fanboy of Magellan and picks it up.

Pros Big Screen
Cons plastic mount is poor quality allowing the screen to shake a lot. No CD for map updates is a big problem. I'm on dish internet. 1.3 gig downloads are out of the question. Megellan offer no other option for map upgrades. I will not buy another.
Summary Upgrade maps is huge problem unless you have a very fast internet connection. Even then there are complaints about Megellens slow server.
Pros - screen size, easy to see details without my glasses
- touch screen buttons sized for big clumsy fingers, I dont have to constantly correct
- adjustable volume, easy to hear over road noice, children
Cons Limited on extra features, would have liked bluetooth, and real time traffic.
Summary I like the large easy to see screen and the good audio volume, as I am turning into a geezer , my eyes and ears aren't what they used to be. This unit is easy to use. I have a mounting kit from proclipsusa.com which is much better than the supplied mount. When mounted on the dask properly the large size is nt a problem, suction cup windshield mounting takes up a lot of realestate in a small vehicle.
Pros LARGE screen is nice and bright BUT,..
Cons maps and directions only about 95% accurate, (turn left in the middle of a bridge?) Fragile construction, battery will not keep a charge, plugged in unit powers down when needed most. Tech support for Repair/return creates a vacuum.
Summary I have used a Magellan Maestro 4700 for a long time an love it. I bought the Roadmate 1700 for the large screen and Interstate lane recommendations rather than update the Maestro programming. I had a battery problem with the Maesto immediately after purchase. Service was right on the ball and impressive. My new Roadmate 1700 (3 wks old) will not keep a charge on the battery, vocal directions do not always match the visual, (the unit "gets lost" frequently, even on older, main roads), but what is really disheartening is the lack of service. The Website tells you to call for Service, the telephone instructions send you to the website in a "catch-22" circle. 24/7 service by website is a joke. any service by phone is a joke. Why am I not laughing? I really, really hope the military is not using these things, else we may look up to see a UAV homed in on our home in a smart bomb run. But then why worry? It would turn left or do a U-turn when it needed to go straight.
