"Pretty good GPS"3.0 starson by VTXDan
Pros: Large, easy-2-read screen. Easy to learn and use.
Cons: Slow re-routing. Often chooses a longer route than needed. NOT UPDATEABLE!
Summary: What exactly did Magellan toss money into the trash for by packing a USB cable with this unit? It is not updateable (I don't care what Magellan says) and you can't x-fer data between PC and GPS with it (again, I don't care). I have seen it take up to 17 minutes to acquire signal (in open, unobstructed view of the sky) and start working. Normal time is 1-2 minutes if the unit has been powered off for a while, less if used frequently.
I have had mine for just over 3 years now and the voice feature has just about quit working - along with any other tones it is suppose to make. I now must rely solely on watching the screen and looking for street names on poles.
Unit frequently lags in refreshing its location on the screen which has caused me to miss a turn on several occasions. Combine this with slow rerouting and it can make for a frustrating trip if you are making several quick turns.
Only 1 time has the unit led me astray and I never did figure out where it was trying to take me. Right past a known POI and wanted me to trek across a cow pasture that was about 12 miles from my destination.
I paid $319 for it 3 years ago and it has served its purpose but I think it is getting time for retirement and a replacement may be in the near future.
When the unit was new and the maps were not in need of updating, the lag time was not present, and the voice/tones worked as they should, this was a very good unit and I was so happy with it that (within 90 days) I purchased a second one for my mother. She loves hers and it is still going strong with no problems other than being out of date.
If I had written this review 3 years ago, I would have given a 5-star rating. Today, I give it a 3.
