"From Never Lost to Never Accurate" on by rtbucci

    Pros: Rich in New Features

Cons: Severe Mapping and Routing Errors

Summary: If you live in the North East (New Jersey) and travel along Route 4 or Route 17 the roadmate will display you are going North & East when you are actually heading South & West. These software problems do not seem to exist in the earler verions of the Magellan Roadmate. Save your money and wait.

"Great for strange places" on by jaag

    Pros: 7 Million POI's, street name call-out, detour re-route

Cons: scrolling the map is way too slow, no battery

Summary: I did my research with bias based on an upcoming cross country move (SF to Boston) so I was more concerned about having things like the 7 million POI's with 40 categories including every possible hotel, restaurant and bar as well as tourist attractions along a 3.5 mile corrider of my route with the ability to input multiple destinations within the 3000+ mile trek and always be guided back on track.
My only gripe about this unit is the Price and the slowness of the scrolling feature. I like to scroll ahead and see what's coming up and it's futile. If you press the scroll button once, it may or may not react, if you hold it down, it may or may not react. It's really frustrating. The only other problem I have with this unit is that it really should have a battery. Except these issues, it's awesome!!

    Updated
So I've had this thing for a couple months now and the cross country trip was almost perfect (except for a little confusion in Utah) the unit did not schedule an exit that was necessary to stay on I-80 but luckily I was also watching the signs. My feeling now after living in Southern NH for a month is that there are many ways to get from point A to B but this unit definately does not get you there in the shortest distance OR in the shortest time when selected. I've timed every one of the 4 "route" scenarios to and from work and thought I'd learn something from the route it told me but in both options it took longer and was not more direct. Turns out that common sense prevails over technology in this case (or maybe it's just the programming?) Once again I'll say it, "Great for STRANGE places" but now I'll add the word "only". p.s. The POI's do add a lot of value (made for an effortless search for food/lodging in the middle of nowhere!)

"Gets you where you want to; but not always the way you want to go" on by jviskil1

Pros: Pleasant female voice provides upcoming direction changes begining at Mile 2 with frequent updates. No need to watch screen .

    Cons: unsteady mounting arm

Summary: Used on trip from San Diego CA to San Jose(450+ miles) and return. It performed perfectly.
Leaving Magellans preprogramed route causes a verbal message to make a U-Turn. However, in each case Magellan found what I was doing and incorporated my change.
A great device. Even at night!

"Wait for Roadmate 800" on by jsxlee

Pros: - Good Routing and rerouting algorithm

Cons: - Text-to-speech not very natually integrate with other instructions

Summary: I read from gpspassion.com (http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=38002) and tigergps.com (http://www.tigergps.com/magellanroadmate800.html) and found out that the new model with updated design, internal battery, mp3 player, photo viewer, 3D map and about the same price is coming out around end of October. So at least the price of 760 will come down but I think 760 is more like an incremental upgrade to 700 and 800 is the brand new design.

I have a Roadmate 700 and tried Roadmate 760 in Brookstone. The obvious change is the added Text to speech capability. However i found that the instruction voice is the same as 700 except a street name is being added to the end of the instructions. The street name voice were systhesised quite different than the instructions, and it does not blend very well. e.g. Turn right in point five mile ... main street. My 700 is the early batch which have 10GB harddisk. I know that some later 700 model has 20GB HD and this can all be achieved by firmware upgrade, but it is highly unlikely the company will do it because no one will buy 760 anymore if they release it as a patch. So sad....in fact they should make 760 a software upgrade to existing 700 users and just promote 800 when it came out.

If you are a 700 user, I think there should be no need to upgrade to 760. 700 is still a good GPS unit overall. I've tried many GPS unit, both stand alone and Pocket PC based. The routing instruction from Magellan series is the best overall, which I think is most critical aspects of any GPS navigator.

"great product, well designed fun to use" on by frankgar

Pros: very easy to install and setup. to be able to beam addresses from a PDA is a great feature. the touch screen is a nice feature

Cons: the voice that announces the streets needs to be clearer, somtimes it is garbled, it appears to be similar to the voice that announces the turns but older, needs to be worked on.

Summary: Over the years I have used the Hertz "Never Lost" option in my business and vacation travels and this was one of the main reasons I opted for the 760.The 760 is an improvement over the "Never Lost" Even though I only recently purchased the unit I'm well satisfied with it. So far, I have only used it in local travels back and forth to the office and other destinations. I have not been able to fool it. Each time I divert from the calculated route within a few seconds I get a new route.
