"From Never Lost to Never Accurate"

by rtbucci on October 13, 2005

    Pros: Rich in New Features

Cons: Severe Mapping and Routing Errors

Summary: If you live in the North East (New Jersey) and travel along Route 4 or Route 17 the roadmate will display you are going North & East when you are actually heading South & West. These software problems do not seem to exist in the earler verions of the Magellan Roadmate. Save your money and wait.

I live in NJ and travel Rt 4 and 17 rtbucci discusses.

Rt 4 is officially and East-West Rd. Sometimes you are actually heading north or south, but the road, and associated signs say East and West.

Rt 17 is officially North-South Rd. And again, sometimes you feel like -- or are actually heading -- east and west.

All highways have this issue, so this isn't a big deal. It's better you know the official designation of the road, than what direction you "think" are are going in.

I totally disagree with giving this unit a "3" based on rbucci's criteria.

I agree it does not always take you your way when you know the way but it gets you there and I have never been lost. I love it

Also live in NJ- Magellan 760 always shows location & direction accurately. Perhaps rtbucci has a faulty unit. The 760 doesn't always choose the route I would have, but the chosen route always works OK

I used the magellan to get from long island to rockland county. On the return trip the magellan would not leave rockland county.. Later at home on long island the magellan still showed us in rockland county. Has anyone else had this problem?

The Magellan 760 and the Magellan 700 have outdated mapping software. I owned both of them and found them to be inaccurate. The mapping software must be at least 5 years out of date. In Middlesex New Jersey there has been a lot of new construction with many new roads. Several or the roads have been modified due to the new construction in the last 10 years. Both of the Magellan?s tell you to make turns on roads that don?t even exist anymore and can?t find the new roads that I know have been in existence for at least 5 years. I?ve also used both of these units in north Jersey and found the turning information to be inaccurate as well.
I just recently purchased the Tom Tom 700 and found the mapping software very accurate. Although it?s weak on the POI. The Tom Tom 700 locks on the satellites very fast and provides real good driving directions. I believe from my tests that the Tom Tom 700 is about the best unit on the market today.
So the bottom line is if you want accurate driving directions don?t buy the Magellan 700 or the 760. Hope this helps?

I travel EXTENSIVELY. 40 out of 52 weeks a year I am on the road and the majority of those weeks I am in a rental car and use it to get around.

The only issues I have seen is when there is too much metal between the unit and the sky so that the Antenna can not get a signal.

I believe that you all need get an EXTERNAL Antenna so that the sensitivity is much higher than the small duck antenna that comes with the system.

Even with the small antenna where are you mounting it anyway? Are you using the funcky vent mount or the Window Suction Cup?

If the funcky vent mount, throw it in the trash and get the suction cup and mount the unit so that the antenna has a CLEAR view to the sky. That is what it needs. No clear view no clear signal. Line of Sight is a Major problem here.

I swear by my RoadMate. I even keep the software current using the USB cable. I plan on using it in Europe and Canada while on international travel too.
