"Outdated, limited map data and poor performance make this inexpensive GPS not worth consideration" on by azbidr
Pros: Touch screen and voice prompts at a very low price. Rapid satellite aquisition and route calculation. Small size, and rechargable battery. Can pan and get location addresses by touching the map.
Cons: Poor performance and glitchy. Unit freezes, won't respond to touch commands, inaudible volume with terrible, tinny and distorted speaker. Map data set extremely limited.
Summary: The low price point for this feature rich device is not worth the savings. The menus are not intuitive and difficult to navigate. I would have loved to have kept it for $129 ($179 on sale + $50 rebate at Checker Auto), but it would not be worth the aggravation.
One wants a GPS to navigate to a desired point of interest (POI). This unit comes preloaded with a limited data set of POIs with no ability for the user to create or upload additional POIs. Not a single store is listed in the "Shopping" folder, yet nearly every art dealer is in the "Attractions" folder. I don't know about you, but I frequent stores much more than art dealers. No phone numbers for POIs are supplied in the map data base. My Garmin data base includes addresses and phone numbers; it is very useful as a sort of phone book.
The X3 also has no ability to create proximity alerts, so forget warning yourself about photo radar or red light cameras.
The ability to pan by dragging the map with your finger would be very useful if it worked with consistency, however touching the map to drag it often resulted in launching the information screen. The info screen gives the approximate address of the point touched. Unfortunately, these addresses are inaccurate. I couldn't even program my own home location because it shows my house as being a block away from its actual location. The zoom function also froze, leaving me unable to resize the map when I needed to, and then finally responding a minute or two later.
The menus to customize maps did not function correctly. Selecting a yellow background made it blue, selecting white made it black.
The rear single speaker is practically inaudible unless it is at maximum volume, and at that volume it is distorted. Although it can play MP3 files, it would be ridiculous to do so except through headphones.
The cigarette lighter power cord has such a strong recoil that it pulls the unit down from the window. It is supposed to have colored LEDs to let you know when the batteries are charged, but these LEDs are not there. The window mount is cumbersome and seems flimsy. I am used to my Garmin, which is simple and solid feeling.
Customer support is easy to reach. They answer the phone promptly, but they seem to be completely unfamiliar with their own product. I was told on calls about three separate issues that my brand new unit was defective and should be exchanged. It seems like the software cannot be reinstalled or altered/repaired. I was also told of future vaporware that would allow user creation of POIs and proximity alarms. However, there has been no update that has ever been offered in the two years since the current software was released 2 years ago, so don't hold your breath waiting for these upgrades. A map update will be coming out and will cost about $50. No free update has ever been offered. -
"Nextar X3-02 - "Don't expect much from this unit."" on by michaelramage
Pros: For basic point to point directions, it does okay. I have not had the volume issues some have had.
Cons: Map software was issued in mid-2007 (it is October, 2008 as I write this) and no update has been announced--free or at a cost. Points of interest are hopelessly out of date, so that function is useless.
Summary: If you can buy this cheap (I got mine for $130 at Tigerdirect.com), don't buy it. Once you start using a GPS (this is my first) you will want timely "points of interest" function to find restaurants, businesses, etc.
Unit also annoyingly defaults to a midwestern USA location and has to be reset frequently. Nextar appears focused on selling units, not supporting the customer's needs after the sale. -
"Buyer beware: there's more than one X3 model out there!" on by DennyW
Pros: Relatively easy to work thru menus
Cons: Cannot update memory contents
Summary: Be careful! There appear to be at least 3 X3 models out there. Our local chain store appears to be dumping the oldest (X3-01) for $ 197.95. My Google search has turned up various reviewers who have the X3-02 model and one writer found an X3-03 at a KMart somewhere. A friend of mine with a $ 500 Garmin evaluated an X3-01 for me and was amazed with its features. For basic navigation it seems to work okay, but it doesn't have newly opened roads and POIs in its 2006 database. NEXTAR says a download will be available at its Web site, but it's not there. Moreover, the manuals don't detail how or why to interface it with one's PC, even though a USB cable is furnished. A stylus comes with the unit; there's no place to stow it, and a replacement for a lost stylus costs $ 19.95. Don't know why one needs it anyway, but we attached ours to the unit with a strong thread. I will be back to update this comment once we take the unit on a long trip. We may still return it to the store, as many apparently have done.

Some have commented that the sound isn't loud enough. I spoke to a Nextar customer support person, who taught me that there are two volume controls, one at the hardware level and the other within the software (thanks, Microsoft...) so make sure you have both turned up to the max and then you should be able to hear the text to speech, albeit slightly distorted. I also asked about availability of map and POI updates, and the Nextar rep said "not in the foreseable future." So my advice is, live with it, at the price you can add to your "Favorites" to bridge the gap. The rep also informed me that all 3 X3 models are basically the same but that some only have US maps, so again: buyer beware. -
"pretty good" on by gadan1
Pros: small size is a plus, fits in your pocket
Cons: battery loses power too quickly
Summary: I use mine all time and so far, so good. Love the small size that fits in my pocket so I do not need to leave it in my car while shopping or dining. Volume is pretty good. Who really looks at a GPS when driving? It distracts and is too small to really read well. Once the novelty wears off, you depend on the voice commands. Smaller is better. Overal, a pretty good GPS. This is my second NEXTAR GPS. If I had it to do over, I am not sure I would buy a NEXTAR. This is my second NEXTAR 99% of the time I love it, but the 1% I hate it.

"Good for the price" on by kellybrak
Pros: Good size, easy to enter info; includes ability to store music and photos, but I don't need those functions-just a GPS
Cons: Had problems with previous model. Hoping this one will have fixed some of the previous defects.
Summary: I received my first Nextar Q3 model for Christmas of 2006 because at that time it had all the features I wanted and a reasonable price. I went through 3 car charger cords during the warranty period. Poorly designed cord; the tip kept breaking off. (Good prompt customer service all 3 times it broke, but obviously no one cares to improve the cord.) Unit works well and easy to input street names etc. I understand others' complaints here about not updating POI and street names. In the 1 1/2 years I had it, I used it mostly for navigation not POIs.
About a month ago the company contacted me and offered to upgrade my old unit for the newest X3-elite for $110 more. So I sent off the old one and my money and received the new one today. I'm already familiar with how it works, so I can see the improvements they have made in this newer model. More features and more user friendly. They also include a website where users can submit POIs and new roads and map updates, so maybe they are finally getting serious about updating it more often. I noticed that the car charger cord looks the same as the one on the previous model that broke 3 times. Hopefully I'll have better luck with it this time.
I agree with previous comment that if I had it to do over, I might have preferred another brand like a Garmin, but for the price, this one does the job.
