"Buyer beware: there's more than one X3 model out there!"

by DennyW on March 13, 2008

Pros: Relatively easy to work thru menus

    Cons: Cannot update memory contents

Summary: Be careful! There appear to be at least 3 X3 models out there. Our local chain store appears to be dumping the oldest (X3-01) for $ 197.95. My Google search has turned up various reviewers who have the X3-02 model and one writer found an X3-03 at a KMart somewhere. A friend of mine with a $ 500 Garmin evaluated an X3-01 for me and was amazed with its features. For basic navigation it seems to work okay, but it doesn't have newly opened roads and POIs in its 2006 database. NEXTAR says a download will be available at its Web site, but it's not there. Moreover, the manuals don't detail how or why to interface it with one's PC, even though a USB cable is furnished. A stylus comes with the unit; there's no place to stow it, and a replacement for a lost stylus costs $ 19.95. Don't know why one needs it anyway, but we attached ours to the unit with a strong thread. I will be back to update this comment once we take the unit on a long trip. We may still return it to the store, as many apparently have done.

Some have commented that the sound isn't loud enough. I spoke to a Nextar customer support person, who taught me that there are two volume controls, one at the hardware level and the other within the software (thanks, Microsoft...) so make sure you have both turned up to the max and then you should be able to hear the text to speech, albeit slightly distorted. I also asked about availability of map and POI updates, and the Nextar rep said "not in the foreseable future." So my advice is, live with it, at the price you can add to your "Favorites" to bridge the gap. The rep also informed me that all 3 X3 models are basically the same but that some only have US maps, so again: buyer beware.
