"Great GPS for low $$.$$" on by dayene

Pros: Text to Speech, Split Screen at intersections, Accuracy.... SONY

    Cons: None so far

Summary: Having owned 2 TomTom Ones 2nd Editions that did not have Text to Speech, I decided to buy something that did and was fortunate to be able to find 2 of these NV-U44 units last week. I think I bought the last 2 in Jacksonville, FL. I had originally bought 2 of the larger NV-U94T's for $155 each new with the 4.8 inch screen. I thought that they just took up too much room when mounted. Granted, the U94T performed perfectly and the picture was great, but after giving more thought to the fact that I had no need for the Bluetooth or optional monthly fee traffic features, I decided to go with this less expensive little brother Sony U44. While I was impressed with the 94T, the U44 is like the 94T, but in a 3.5" display without Traffic and Bluetooth. The maps are the same as the 94T and are version 2008. That means they have current maps for now, but as new roads are being built....what is current today will be obsolete tomorrow. With the prices of a GPS being driven downward at an astronomical rate, it is almost as cheap in some cases to buy a new unit than to pay to upgrade maps. The text to speech is very nice. You can put it in a cupholder if you want and let it instruct you on turns without even having to mount it on the dash or windshield to view. The U44 is very accurate in directions, speed , mileage and ETA. The touchscreen is responsive. I use a rubber tipped stylus pen from my PDA to speed up the process and tap the numbers, etc. That helps since my fingers are big and I can tap one key at a time much faster. If you are looking for a great GPS, you will not go wrong with this unit. My gut feeling is that Sony is getting out of the GPS business. They had these on their website for $79.99 and their other units reduced anywhere from 50% to 70% within 5 months of coming out in production. All have been cleared out and posted as no longer available. I bought mine new for $59.99 each(regular price $249.99), but I suspect that since Sony no longer carries them that the price is being driven up on the web. I see them ranging in price online from $69 to $250

"Sony's Idea Of A Joke" on by BULLDOGWPG

Pros: Ok its nice compact works fine, purchased in Jan/09 was advised at purchase that Sony should be supplying at least the first map updated for free as most others have? Awesome Great Buy Great entry model but thats it

Cons: Cannot enter places common in Manitoba such as a Provincial Park. No Bluetooth/ music player but hey its a GPS foremost

Summary: Here it is July and lo and behold for a mere $100 bucks here is your new map! This GPS was scam right from the start I feel for the cost of the map I will stay away from Sony for my GPS needs I think. At least I know Garmin is out there.

"Still 250$ at Sears in Canada" on by jeansth

Pros: Had it for 79,99$ at Sears in US. A real bargain with all the main functions you expect from a GPS

Cons: Not find any problem yet.

"excellent unit, solid construction,it's a Sony" on by steveva

Pros: very easy to use, nice screen, Sony Style website is very helpful for updates

Cons: POI navigation is a little sketchy, it may well be me but I'll figure it out

Summary: My wife thinks I just like buying gadgets. But she really likes this unit compared to our 1st GPS a Nextar. This is such an improvement over the Nextar. I have looked at almost all of the mid price units and I think for the money ($79 at Sears for refurbished unit) there was no way you could go wrong. I did not want one with all kinds of add ons and features I would never use. This does everything I want from a GPS-it gets me from point A to point B.

"GREAT DEAL FOR A BASIC GPS" on by 123waffles

Pros: Voice to txt, it gets the job done for a fraction of the price of most GPS. It has most of the basic features and gets you from point A to B without breaking the Bank.

Cons: NONE so far, besides no bluetooth

Summary: if you are looking for a gps that will not be used all the time and are afraid of wasting money this is the one i got a refurbished model at a sony outlet for only 65 dollars and it runs great. Also if u are not technologically advanced this is very easy to use it is very self explanatory. Although if u want to waste money or really need a certain feature look elsewhere, but if u want a solid gps at a good price i would get this model for 65 bucks i could find no other gps.
