  • "Nice unit, but there's no way to expand the memory."

Pros: Good graphics & crisp layout, Short satellite locking time, Customizable options, Ability to make map corrections and share them.

Cons: Lack of expandable memory for future map updates (No SD or micro SD card slots).

Summary: I have a few questions about TomTom's new Go 2405TM & 2505TM. I noticed that both are limited to 4GB of internal memory with no SD or micro SD card slot for expandable memory. What happends when you update the maps? Won't the units eventually run out of memory? Map updates will require more memory in the future. Are the lifetime map updates deemed useless up to a certain point once the memory gets used up completely?

What if I want to add an additional map; such as Europe? Do I have to temporarily remove an existing map to install a map of Europe? What if the map of Europe is a larger memory required map than the map I removed temporarily?

I'd rather go with the Garmin Nuvi 3790LMT. That's the best stand alone GPS unit in the market for now. And Garmins have memory slots for expandable memory in their units.

If it had an SD or micro SD card slot for memory expansion, I'd give it a 5 star rating.

Eventually you'll have to purchase another TomTom device because you will use up your 4GB capacity. Between the Nuvi 3790LMT and the Go 2505, I'll be able to keep the 3790LMT longer because I'll have the capability of putting as much memory into the 3790LMT as I want. The largest SD cards I've seen were 64GB of memory. That's 16 times more memory! As maps get updated through the years, they will require more memory. I think this is ANOTHER game played by TomTom so that you'll go out and buy another unit; even if the unit you have still works fine. Their XXL 540 WTE offered lifetime map updates. But what TomTom failed to disclose to their consumers was that the map of Europe was NOT included in the offer. That's false advertisment in my book.

I'm also an owner of the Go 920T. It still works, but I no longer can get traffic on it. I tried calling TomTom customer service, and it seems that they can't seem to fix THEIR server to their RMS traffic cables. They advised me to by new unit.

You can remove the old maps and not have to buy a new one. I have had 3 TomToms and currentl have a 920 . I have an SD slot but I just remove the old map if I get an out of memory message. Not a big deal !! I have just grilled my rep on the 2505 and spent over an hour checking out all the features on a unit. I love it and will get one when they get more stock. They were sold out. Also the lifetime traffic he was admit about. As long as you, the original owner own the unit it gets free traffic and map updates !
Service was good on my 920 when it stopped receiving signals .They replaced it without a fuss !

I have a 920 which is my 3rd TOM TOM. I have deleted maps to make space for a new one even though it has a SD slot . It was not a big deal.
I am considering a 2505 TM but trying to get as much info as possible ! I will keep the 920 as a back up . I am concerned about the life time map and traffic promise so I will investigate that further .

Trust me TomS1222, you'll have to buy another unit eventually. The question is; 'when is eventually?'

My Go 920T has an SD card slot in it for memory expantion. Can you tell me WHY these NEW units from TomTom DO NOT have an SD or microSD card slots in them?? What's the deal???

And who knows how long 1GB of extra space will actually last you?

Do you actually own the TomTom2505? Probably not since you are questioning the Memory capacity etc. I believe that 4GB is plenty of internal memory for any maps and voices that you might want to install. The US Maps are just a little over 1GB and the European Maps if you want to install them are about 1.3 GB then the voices and backgrounds and icons can't be more than maybe 200-300 mb. So that all together will be less than 3gb with over a Gig of space breathing room. Any updated maps will remove the old clutter and install updates so it will not require any more space. So 4GB is plenty in my opinion for MP3's and such you should use your IPOD or IPhone etc.
