"Does everything well within reasonable expectations, but will not do miracles"
Pros: Great screen, good navigation even among tall buildings like in downtown Chicago, great hands-free calling if you have a Bluetooth cell phone, and more
Cons: Menus could be improved, blue toot remote sometimes looses connection with the unit
Summary: I have been using this unit for several months now and I?m very pleased with it. Before buying it I had read a lot of reviews, especially the negative ones on various sites. However, I still went with this one because of it came with detailed maps, not only of North America but also all of Europe, which I use a lot.
After purchasing the unit I found out that many of the negative comments were groundless because several of the ?reported problems? could easily be solved by changing the settings of the unit. E.g. someone complained that the unit always turns of between instructions when running on battery ?. well, go and change the settings before you complain! Another person complained about the suction cup not holding to the windshield ? very true if you don?t know to put it on right. I can?t even pull mine off without lifting the release tab!!
Several comments were made about outdated maps or misleading POIs. Well, ? you can update them online, which I do that once a week. I drove thousands of miles with this thing and only came across 2 POIs that were in the wrong place and a few instances where the map was slightly off in a new development area ? but so was the printed map that I had in my car. However, that is normal and it happens with all the other brands too, they may not wrong in the same place as the TomTom but therefore they have mistakes in other locations where the TomTom is correct. There are countless changes to maps and POIs every month and it usually takes some time to update or it takes someone to report the change.
Having said all that I must say that the 920T handles all these issues very well. If you are not happy with the POIs then you can create your own or download POIs from the TomTom fan-community on the Internet. The same is true for map corrections. I just updated my maps by adding the streets of a new community that is just being built in my neighborhood.
The only problem I ever had with the unit was that it locked up completely when I lost my internet connection while I was upgrading the software, and the reset button would not fix it. However, I was able to solve the problem within a few minutes by reformatting the internal HDD and then simply copying the backup files from my PC to the TomTom and everything worked fine again.
By the way, a computer crash is nothing unusual in this day and age. Every computer I ever owned locked up at some point in it?s career, including the Palm and pocket PCs I owned. You just need to know how to recover from it.
Conclusion: Good unit, highly customizable (provided you know how), easy to make and report changes to the map, easy to reset after a major crash or lock-up (provided you have backed up your unit before)
Don?t allow negative comments to put you off too quickly, but try to read between the lines. Sometimes negative comments are written by people who belong to the group of the ?Technically Challenged?, who would also complain about a screen saver coming on too quickly because they don?t know how to change the settings.
