    "Navigation software requires full maps"

    by Maniac10k1 on November 22, 2006

Pros: Beautiful interface. Fast processor, Bright screen.

Cons: Map library is sub-par at best. Need to pay for updates.

Summary: I bought this unit as a present and decided to check it for dead pixels etc. before Christmas. When the unit can find a particular address, it works wonderfully. It has the most intuitive design I've seen so far. Unfortunately, it couldn't find my brother's street. I decided to navigate my way back to my apartment. No luck. It could identify my street easily enough, but it was missing the first 6500 street numbers. I tried a handful of other places in various states and found a recurring theme. The unit simply doesn't have a large enough map library.

It appears that TomTom had to simply cut arbitrary addresses from the database to fit everything on the card. For $500, you'd think they could provide a larger card / map library. The included software lets the user update the maps for a ridiculous fee. After paying $500 for a unit, I think you should start off with up-to-date maps. After getting junk to start off with, how much faith do you have that the expensive updates will actually bring the unit up to speed?

I dont know where you bought your tomtom because I only paid half that price and for the pricing I think it is a very good system. Maybe you didnt know how to work it. It takes me wherever I need to go whether it be in Hawaii or Florida it is very helpful.

TomTom has been providing a free update of the TeleAtlas map database for free for users that bought their units between a certain time period. For units purchased outside this time window the new database is ~$50. This free update ends soon so you must hurry to get it. Go to the TomTom website for details.
Note -- the full North American update (US & Canada) takes >1GB so you will need to replace the SD card with a new 2GB card to get the full features. Buy a high-speed SD card or performance will suffer.
