"Faulty product released with know major "glitches""
0.5 starson by John-BiglinPros: Customer service number was answered with relatively little hold time.
Cons: Faulty product released with know major "glitches". Uniformed phone personal. Tom Tom home program irreversively renders the unit useless. No online fix for known software issues. No warning of known issues in the box, documentation, or online.
Summary: I watched a presentation of this unit done by a representitve of TomTom. I was very impressed with the units capability's that were demonstrated. Once I got the unit. I downloaded the tomtom home program., and it all went downhill from there. Once you hook up the unit it searches for new maps with it's 30 day map guarantee. The program found that a new map was available for download for free. I spent hours trying to download the new map only to start receiving error messages. At this point the unit no longer worked at all. I called Tomtom customer service. and they sent me some links that would help me flash the unit and reinstall software. More time was wasted, more errors messages, and then software said that the new map was too big to fit on the unit. I called Tomtom back again and gave them the rundown of what had occurred and they looked up my problem #. They then said " Oh you have the 340 S; there is a glitch in those units." She then explained that the automatic update that occurs when you first hook it up, is what cripples the unit. I asked if I could flash the unit and download the original software image and reinstall. she said no. When asked why Tomtom would release a product with such a major issue? She Said "I don't know I just work in the call center." Needless to say I am just returning this unit as defective and not going through the RMA process.
I have been a beta tester for various hardware and software company's and I have never seen a product, even in a beta test; released with such a major software issue.
Bottom line. If you must have this unit, or received it as a gift; DO NOT under any circumstances update the unit or you will have a $250.00 paperweight.

It is not just the 340s. We have a TomTom XL 330 that we bought 18 months ago. It worked perfectly until 2 days ago when we decided to purchase and install a map upgrade. We now have paperweight too! Our unit was rendered useless during the process and can't load anything previously backed up either! Warranty is only 12 months so we are out of luck in getting our money back or a replacement. We had to fight with tech support to get our $35 back that we spent to purchase the map that never installed! I will never buy a TomTom again!

I got an XL for Christmas and while updating the maps it disconnected itself from my Mac. Tech support's solution is to find a PC and use it to update. As many have done I did not do a back up before connecting.... it just started the update, erased my maps and then disconnected and isn't reloading. I hope my husband still has the receipt! This thing is going back to where it came from!

I had no luck updating my new unit using TomTom Home in windows, So I downloaded the Mac version to my wife's Macintosh and it functioned quite well, now I am updated. I did take out the foreign language voices first, backed up, then installed the updated map. Then I made a new backup with the updated map in it. All seems to be working quite well for now. I like the unit on the road much more than the Garmin 360 that I had before - the way it informs seems to be thought out more thoroughly. I like it. But the issues with using TomTom Home in windows were horrid.

I don't understand your bottom line comment when you said that under any circumstance not to update the unit. Do you mean hooking up to my pc and updating from tomtom home ? Please clarify. Thanks.

I think I am having this problem. Bought an XL340 within the last month, on 7/28/09 the TomTom Home PC software said a free new map was available under the 30-day rule. Downloaded the actual map from TomTom OK, but the process stalls about half way into loading the map from the PC to the unit. The PC software downloaded the larger "unsimplified" North America map (I was given no choice) but I think this unit needs a slighltly smaller "2GB" version. I have come close to making the 340 a rock a couple of times trying to fix this - looks like I am calling customer support to get the smaller map or something. thanks for this article!

Spoke with Tom Tom support this morning. The problem was with the maps and not the gps units. The problem with the maps has reported to have been corrected as of last week.

I ordered my first XL 340S from QVC. The unit also went dead after initial download, but QVC took it back and sent me a new one. The second 340s has operated fine, except the car charger will not function to charge the unit, making it useless on a long trip. I am hoping Tom Tom will send me a new car charger that works. (yes, the unit charges fine with USB cable).

6/7 update: Seeing a review where the user did not have a problem with updating maps (around 5/31) I asked TomTom. Their reply was: "We are still working on resolving the issue. Not all ONE 140 or XL 340 devices are effected by this, however. " Perhaps newer 340XL have larger memory or some other difference.

Having read about the problems I sent an email to TomTom tech support. Here is the reply on 6/2/2009: "The memory of the XL 340 is not corrupt. The new maps for the device are too large to be placed onto it. We are working on resolving this issue in a timely manner; however, there is not an estimated time of when this will be completed."
Indicates that further purchases of the 340 should be held off until this problem is fixed.
