Pros: Lifetime Maps and Traffic. Great flexibility to configure options. Wide screen. Ability for users to submit map corrections.
Cons: Map accuracy (or lack thereof). Battery life. Windshield Mount. Slow to recalculate. Support.
Summary: I really had no intention of looking at the TOMTOMs but with free maps and traffic, it's pretty difficult to beat this unit. Garmin can learn a lesson from TOMTOM in that regard. It's mind boggling how Garmin can charge $400-500 for some of their units and not include lifetime map updates. That said, this unit got me from A to B without much difficulty and did so pretty efficiently. There was one area that I was in, however, where there were at least six roads shown on the map that it was directing me to drive through that simply did not exist. A quick check on any of the sites using the Navteq maps and Navteq showed the area accurately. That kind of supports many of the comments that the TeleAtlas maps tend to be less accurate in the US. Recalculating missed turns tended to be a little on the slow side and I ended up missing a few subsequent turns as a result. When I first received the unit I attempted to update the maps, but their TOMTOM HOME software kept giving me "FORBIDDEN", 404 errors. I called their support and had to argue with the technician who kept insisting it was my router, Windows Firewall, or Antivirus causing the problem. He refused to listen. I had to prove to him there was a problem with the web site at which point he came back and said of yes, the web site is down for maintenance, thank you for bringing that to my attention. NOT GOOD. The mount leaves a lot to be desired. Every time I tried to mount the unit on the windshield, or adjust it, it popped off it back of the GPS and the GPS went flying. Of course, there are decent aftermarket mounts that work well, but that'll cost you another $20-30. All in all, it's hard to beat the unit from a functionality perspective, and with a few minor improvements it could be a much better contender. With some stores selling it for under $200, it's worth a look.
