Pros Lane Avoidance
Cons Poor Customer service, I bought two TOMTOM550TMs One for me, one for the daughter, just saw hers in operation and I realized my Lifetime traffic doesn't work, contacted TOMTOM, told me mine was out of warranty, buy a new cable. Didn't fix, bad GPS
Summary Customer support at TomTom is not good, ready to wash their hands of you as soon as possible. I took their executive support advice and bought a new traffic cable, it made now difference, as the traffic never worked I assume the product is defective, what eally makes me angry is they mad no effort to troubleshoot, what makes me madder is and this is straight from their site "Thier limited warranty covers defective product for two years, I bought mine december 2010 and it is definitly defective. I was looking at Garmin and they match up with all the same features. Time to change GPS companies.
Pros I like the features although they are not always easy to find. Good voices, car icons to use, volume is loud enough to hear in moving car.
Cons I actually have a TomTom XXL550 SE from Sam's and the SE model is supposed to have lifetime traffic and maps. I tried for several months to update map and finally found screen telling me the time for map updates had ended.
Summary I don't like to have to contact a company for anything. Getting my map updates should have been simple. I haven't heard from them yet to tell if they will give me the updates.
Then the being slow to find the location and menu difficulties is enough for me to go back to Magellan next time. I had two Magellan units and liked them better, thought they were easier to use.
Pros Big screen
Cons Breaks in less than a month
Short battery life
Summary My first Tomtom 550 XXL TM lasted about 8 months. After 8 months of very gentle use (never left it in the car, kept it in a case when not in use), it broke. The replacement provided by the big box store I got it form (thank goodness for service plans!) lasted less than a month before it too, broke. This time, the big box store had no more of this turd to replace my busted one, so I contacted Tomtom. After e-mail tag, I was told to send my GPS to them and the company would replace it.
Now, after a month, the company is denying that they have recieved my GPS, and will not send me a replacement. I attempted to talk to customer service on the phone, and they took my number to call me back, but never did.
I should have used the broken Tomtom as store credit towards a different brand of GPS. One that might actually function. Sadly, I am now out not only a GPS, but about $150 towards one that might not be a turd. I would only wish a Tomtom on my enemies.
Pros I love the large screen! Lifetime maps and traffic make it a great value. Worked properly out of the box. I, too, was confused why the unit wasn't advising me of upcoming turns in advance, until I read the manual. You must select a 'voice' that is compu
Cons We went on a tour and a friend brought his Garmin along. He could switch his unit into pedestrian mode, and it showed the walking paths in the park we were touring. I couldn't figure out if my unit could do that, or how to even try. But, I'ld only had
Summary An excellent unit that worked out of the box. Huge display. Excellent features. Lifetime maps and traffic. Low cost vs. competing units. I say it's a winner!
