Tuners embrace Hyundai Genesis at SEMA

GReddy Genesis Coupe

The GReddy Genesis Coupe is pretty heavily tuned and it wasn't even the craziest Coupe at Hyundai's booth.

Last year, Hyundai was all about the Genesis sedan at the 2008 SEMA Show. For 2009, the newer and sportier Genesis Coupe steps to the forefront for its share of the spotlight. Hyundai had no fewer than four Coupes in its booth and there were dozens more scattered across the rest of the show floor. If that's not enough to convince your that Hyundai's got a hit on its hands, we're not sure what will.

Among Hyundai's offerings were the wild midengine V-8 RM460 Genesis Coupe and the mild Hennessey Tuning School Coupe. Also in the mix was Hyundai's Genesis Coupe 2.0T R-Spec, which we've already taken a look at, and a Genesis sedan that received custom hand painted graphics live during the show.

Check out our photos of Hyundai's assortment of Geneses for even more details.

Inspired by Ge Kiln porcelain, this one-off Ferrari 599 gets a special paint job by Chinese artist Lu Hao. The method for creating Ge Kiln was practiced in the Song Dynasty (between 960 and 1279). The unique look resembles cracked ice.

Several autoblogs today reported the car sold for $2 million at a charity auction.

Honda S2000 Coupe mod

Honda S2000

This Honda S2000 sports the ugly-but-effective Mooncraft Hardtop.

We caught sight of this car while out on a photo shoot. Some of it is a Honda S2000, normally a roadster but modified into coupe form. A little Web research told us that this body mod is from Mooncraft, a Japanese design firm long involved in motorsports. Many Web sites refer to the Mooncraft hardtop for the S2000 as "infamous," but it apparently increases the car's acceleration times due to its aerodynamics.

Drop Top Customs will make your Camaro a convertible, since GM won't

If you can't wait for GM to get off of its duff and release the convertible Camaro, Drop Top Customs will make one for you. (Credit: Drop Top Customs)

Suppose you wanted to pick up a convertible Chevrolet Camaro. You could wait patiently until the rumored 2012 release date. You could hope against hope that GM actually decides to release the darn thing. However, if you've got an extra 18 grand burning a hole in your pocket, you could see the folks at Drop Top Customs about making one for yourself, right now.

Custom convertibles usually look odd with the top up. Drop Top's Camaro avoids this pitfall.

That $18,000 dollar price tag doesn't include the cost of the donor car, so expect to add between $22K and $33K, depending on how much topless muscle you're looking for.

Florida-based Drop Top Customs is currently accepting orders and will display its custom convertible Camaro at the 2009 SEMA Show.

GReddy gives the Genesis Coupe a boost

Ugly graphics and dumb name nonwithstanding, we're excited about the GReddy X-Gen Street Genesis Coupe

Before all is said and done, GReddy plans to more than double the Genesis Coupe 2.0T's power output.

(Credit: GReddy)

When Hyundai announced that it would be debuting a 2-liter turbocharged version of its rear-wheel driven Genesis Coupe, I thought to myself, "The tuner crowd is going to go crazy over this."

Not even a year later, it appears that I was correct. Case in point, GReddy performance parts will be bringing a tuned-up Genesis Coupe 2.0T--dubbed the "GReddy X-Gen Street Genesis Coupe"--to the 2009 SEMA Show packed to the gills with performance parts and spinning its flywheel to the tune of 350-horsepower.

Bear in mind that the stock Genesis 2.0T packs only 210-ponies under its bonnet, so that's a sizable improvement. So how did they do it?

Bolt-on upgrades include a GReddy Performance Products turbo upgrade kit, a large front-mounted intercooler kit, a cat-back exhaust system, and a fully adjustable coil-over suspension, along with numerous other modifications. Bringing the Coupe to a stop are GReddy six-piston front- and four-piston rear-brake calipers.

At the end of the day, the rather goofily named X-Gen Genesis will generate 350-horsepower and 320 pound-feet of torque. With that kind of power, GReddy expects 0-60 runs to take under six seconds. And GReddy doesn't plan on ending there: once SEMA is behind them, the Coupe will then be further modified with a 500-horsepower target. 250-horsepower per liter of displacement? I'll take two.

The GReddy X-Gen Street Genesis Coupe will be displayed at the 2009 SEMA Show in early November.

To commemorate Infiniti's 20th anniversary, Infiniti Canada collaborated with Cirque du Soleil and Montreal artist Heidi Taillefer to create a one-of-a-Kind, Cirque-inspired Infiniti G Coupe. The intricate design was hand-painted over a period of a month and was unveiled last week at the 14th Annual Canadian Art Gallery Hop Gala. The anniversary vehicle will be displayed at events and galas over the next few months and will ultimately be auctioned off for charity.

Tommi Kaira builds the world's sexiest Prius

Toyota Prius tuned by Tommi Kaira

Even the world's sexiest Prius is still just a Prius.

(Credit: Tommi Kaira)

Apparently, the 2010 Toyota Prius was feeling a bit frumpy and has decided to shake things up with a new look. So, the humble hybrid has gone under the knife of Japanese vehicle modifiers Tommi Kaira. The result is a new, sexy look and not much else.

Post-op, the Prius' front bumper has been replaced by a more aggressive unit with an integrated lip spoiler and larger intakes. Updated side skirts and rear bumper round out the Prius' new look. Peeking from beneath the bumper is a dual-muffler, quad-tipped exhaust that probably sounds good, but most likely doesn't do any favors for the Prius' horsepower or fuel efficiency. Requisite larger wheels and tires and a lowered suspension round out the tuning package.

I'm sure those quad-exhaust tips are really helping the Prius' 1.8-liter gasoline engine breathe.

(Credit: Tommi Kaira)

You'll notice that we haven't mentioned any engine mods. That's because there aren't any. (Can you really call it "tuning" if you don't tune the engine?) The Tommi Kaira Prius makes its stock 134 horsepower and stock 50 mpg fuel economy rating. That is, if the aero upgrades haven't hurt Toyota's wind-tunnel-tested drag coefficient.

As long as changes are being made, I wonder if Tommi Kaira can do something about the Prius' dated DVD-based navigation system.
