Badass Dodge Challengers rock SEMA Show

by Gary Spencer
  • Post a comment

Yesterday's clip was all about some blazing hot custom made Ford Mustangs making their presence felt at the 2009 SEMA Show last week in Las Vegas. Chevrolet reportedly also got in on the act with pimpin' out Camaros a plenty for SEMA insiders and car enthusiasts alike. Well, if you're thinking Dodge didn't have something similar up their sleeves, then like Judas Priest says "you've got another thing coming."

Today's Web video features Edward Loh from Motortrend.com gushing over some flashy custom 2009 Dodge Challengers, and with damn good reason. These Challengers are spectacular to look at, and a hot green convertible in particular is given a lot of camera time for its blingtastic wheels and 560HP V-8 engine. Roughly half way through the video, we get to scope a red Challenger that's been infused with a Viper V-10 engine and all sorts of custom options built in. Anyone who thinks that modern American muscle cars aren't something to get excited about should probably think again.

Bad Ass American Rides Pt. 5: Racing with the Pontiac Firebird Trans Am!

With the July 4 holiday upon us, the citizens of the United States will be celebrating American traditions such as freedom, family and barbecue. Well, I can think of a couple of other American traditions worth celebrating such as muscle cars and the thrill of a race. And in today's video we get both traditions as we celebrate racing with the Pontiac Firebird Trans Am.

This fun vid is almost like a mini-movie. First, we get an evolutionary slideshow of some the beautiful birds from the past, set to the theme from WWE's Undertaker (ooh, scary!). Then we hop aboard the Trans Am as we go for a ride, street racing against a Toyota Supra. Finally, we land at the drag strip, where a more modern Firebird smokes and peels out on the asphalt. Dig the wheelie as the front end launches off the ground at 4:45 mark. Killer.

Bad Ass American Rides Pt. 4: '68 Dodge Charger on a Test Drive

So far this week we've taken a look at some bad ass cars that have come from the good ol' US of A. So far we've seen some Chevys and some Fords, but I think it' due time for Dodge to represent. So here we go with video of a fine Dodge Charger to add a little spice to your system.

The '68 Dodge Charger should be up there with your classic Mustangs and Camaros for your top tier American muscle cars. Here in this video we get a prime example of classic American steel on wheels. We get views of the car's exterior and inside of the car's interior as we go for a ride around the neighborhood. This particular car is among my favorite Dodges ever made, and given that this performance car was later tapped as the main ride for The Dukes of Hazzard, apparently I'm not the only one who thinks this car is an American dream of power and performance.

Bad Ass American Rides Pt. 3: '68 Ford Mustang "Bullitt"

by Gary Spencer

As I am currently putting together this web video blog, I am overlooking the beautiful hills and horizon of the unique American city known as San Francisco. So given this week's blog theme and my current city of residence I found it wholly appropriate to pay tribute to another of my favorite American muscle car classics, the timeless Ford Mustang GT...

The Ford Mustang has a rich 40 year history in American culture. The Mustang's humble origins were that of a "secretary" car that was transformed into a performance vehicle by racing designer Carroll Shelby. Since the late '60's the Mustang has become renowned as a world wide sports car staple. This video here features a modified 1968 Ford Mustang GT 390 in action as driven by an American bad ass in his own right - the inimitable Steve McQueen. This car chase scene comes from the 1968 action flick "Bullitt" which is filmed on the streets of the San Francisco bay area. Interspersed with the car chase are stills of a Highland Green Ford Mustang GT fastback which gives the lucky audience a closer look at the exquisite interior and exterior of this classic automobile. Although Ford never produced a "Bullitt" edition of the Mustang, this particular make of Mustang is almost synonymous with the movie of the same name.

Bad Ass American Rides Pt. 2: '69 Chevy Camaro

As we get revved up for the Fourth of July this coming weekend, I have slated a week long tribute to some of the most bad-assed American cars ever made. And they don't get much more classic than the iconic 1969 Chevy Camaro SS.

This video actually features a '69 Camaro SS for sale from Fleming's Ultimate Garagebra, and whoever managed to afford this American beauty got a really special car. This Camaro rocks royal blue paint with white stripes from the tip of the hood to the end of the trunk, and it sports brand new performance tires as well. At the :50 mark we get a look at the interior, and it has been upheld in the most pristine manner possible. Then at the 1:25 mark we get a peek under the hood. Everything looks clean and pretty which is further confirmed at 2:05 mark when they start the 396 engine and let that baby roar for a few seconds...it's most definitely music to my ears.

This Week: A Salute to Bad Ass American Rides

by Gary Spencer

This coming weekend, our country will be celebrating the annual Fourth of July holiday. And what better way to celebrate the rich history of the USA than with a week long tribute to some of the most bad ass American automobiles ever made? I sure can't think of a better way, so here we go with the Super Muscle Car Shootout!

This web video is actually a trailer for the Muscle Car Shootout that aired on the Speed Channel in 2006, but the cars showcased here are simply timeless. Some of the most powerful American performance car classics are showcased here, including the Baldwin Motion Camaro, Royal Bobcat GTO Ram Air IV, AMC Hurst Scrambler and more. These types of cars and their historic charm are part of what makes me proud to be an American, and I proudly salute these fine American automobiles and the others that I plan on featuring in this week's blog.

Riding around in a bright red Dodge Challenger SRT8 is not the best way to go unnoticed. With its wide and low design and deep HEMI V-8 growl, all eyes were on us as we cruised the streets of San Francisco. But the kind of attention attracted in the Challenger was unlike most high-powered sports cars in which we've found ourselves behind the wheel. Everywhere we went, people--almost exclusively male--were giving us the thumbs up, approving nods, fist pumps, and, on one occasion, a full-on round of applause. Yeah, that last one surprised even us.

The attention didn't stop when the car was parked for the night, either. As it rested in the CNET garage, people asked to sit in it and took pictures next to it. These are the same people, mind you, who just a few weeks ago walked right past the Mercedes C63 AMG without a second glance. How's that for cachet?
