If you need an external rewritable CD drive that can burn a lot of discs in a hurry, look no further than CenDyne's affordable external USB 2.0 CD-RW. This 40X/12X/40X screamer turned in the best mastering times we've seen from any USB 2.0 or FireWire drive and, at $149 retail, does it for less than most of the competition.

Easy does it
The CenDyne lacks extraneous niceties such as installation videos and software manuals, but everything you truly need comes in the box. It includes the drive, cables, Ahead Software Nero Burning ROM 5.5 for mastering chores, and the same company's InCD program for packet writing. To install the drive, plug in the USB and power cables, insert the software CD, and follow the onscreen prompts. Total time: about five minutes. The drive works with Windows Me, 2000 Professional, and XP. If you need help, consult the concisely written installation guide, which also offers handy tips on topics such as media compatibility.

The full-sized drive weighs about a pound and measures 8.5 inches deep by 6 inches wide by 1.5 inches high. It feels reasonably sturdy and features metallic-blue-and-silver styling with flowing, slightly sculpted lines. Two buttons on the front of the unit let you skip tracks and stop or eject CDs, and the right-front side of the unit sports both a headphone jack and a volume control for easy access. The back plate features a 35-pin Centronics-style connector for the proprietary cable and a power connector for the 4-ounce AC adapter (the drive won't run off bus power).

More discs per hour
In CNET Labs' tests, the CenDyne turned in some remarkable scores--faster than nearly all of the external competition, as well as many internal IDE burners. The drive mastered our 473MB audio file in a mere 2 minutes and took a paltry 1 minute, 39 seconds to install Microsoft Office 2000 Small Business Edition. In packet-writing tests, the drive took 7 minutes, 49 seconds to write 400MB to CD-RW. It also extracted 273MB of audio in only 53 seconds. The CenDyne offers buffer-underrun-compensation technology so that you can confidently burn in the background without fear of creating bad discs.

The drive carries an industry-standard, one-year warranty, and CenDyne provides telephone support Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. PT on Saturdays, though it's a toll call. Online support includes FAQs, e-mail to a technician, product registration, and a tech-support bulletin board, though we could find no software or firmware updates specific to this model. You can always update the Nero software at Ahead's Web site, if necessary.

If you need a burner that's easy to share, we recommend the CenDyne external USB 2.0 CD-RW. It offers easy setup and the fastest mastering times we've seen for an external drive, all at a very affordable price.

The CenDyne external USB 2.0 CD-RW took just two minutes to complete the audio-burn test, beating all the other external drives and some internal models as well. During packet writing, the CenDyne also beat out most of the competition. When it came to audio extraction, however, the CenDyne finished in about the same amount of time as 32X external drives from Cyclone and QPS.

All write tests are run with both the drive's recommended media (submitted by the manufacturer) and with Verbatim media, rated at the drive's maximum speed.

Can be faulty

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I bought my cendyne a few months ago and it keeps on making a rattling noise and refuses to read the cdrs. When it works, it's great and that's only sometimes.

Excellent performance, flimsy design

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This unit ripped scratched Audio CDs at full speed that others couldn't read at a crawl. Excellent performance, both read and write. The unit looks ugly, and the top is flimsy, but performance is what counts. If you need support, call the number listed on the warranty card. The on-line customer support is useless.

Disappointing Experience

Pros:

Cons:

Review: The software caused my computer (Win ME) to crash and I could only rectify the problem by putting my computer into Safe Mode and removing all the CenDyne files. When I finally got the software to work, I burned one CD and the recording ended up with skipping and crackling throughout. The price is great, but it's hardly worth the hassle and lack of customer service. I'm sending this back to Dell today.

Tech Support & Drivers Non-Existent

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I think its a return unless I can find a driver. The unit is functional on a XP operating system but not on a Windows 98 system. I don't think there is any Tech Support or any driver for a Windows 98 system.

Difficult intallation, tech support non-existent

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Difficult-to-impossible installation,XP did not recognise new hardware and CenDyne's tech support was non-existent. Their user's feedback page was littered with similar complaints. The unit itself was flimsy and I wasn't able to assess the burning speed I had read all about. Still, I would rather have a unit that took 5 minutes to burn 600MB of data and WORKED ALL THE TIME,than one that purports to do the same in 3 minutes, but unreliably so!

The burner I'd like to carry in the hereafter

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I burn images of my laptop hard drive using Acronis True Image 6. It's a 20 GB drive with nearly 4 GB of installed software, downloads, photos and junk. It's always taken slightly more than an hour with a Pacific Digital 48X12X48 burner mounted in an ADS case, or the same with a CynDyne 48X16X48 in the same type of case. With the CenDyne 40X/12X/40X (which I've dubbed "Godzilla" because it looks like something out of an Asian sc-fi movie) the actual burn time is 25 minutes! I had to rub my eyes the first time. I couldn't believe any burner could handle so much data that fast. I use it with an Adaptec USB2connect for notebooks PCMCIA card adapter. I like Godzilla so much - and after the rave review on CNET - I went out and purchased a second drive this weekend. I also like the fact that it's only slightly larger than a Sony CD player.

Flimsy, driver nightmare, not USB

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This one's going back. The cheap plastic lid isn't likely to survive the week under normal use. The "USB"-ness of the drive is debatable too. This unit doesn't have a USB connector. It has an ATAPI connector on the back, and a USB cable which converts it to ATAPI. Locating drivers for this thing is impossible. CenDyne's driver page disavows all knowledge of the product. Minor gripe about the power supply: The AC line cord has a "mickey mouse" style end on it, the one style of cord I don't already own. For traveling it's nice to have equipment share cords, but that's not possible if everything uses a different style.
