Very easy to install and useby - September 20, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: I have read all review about this model and decide to try it my own =). And I'm glad to have it now: install on my WinXP(Win98SE) boxes takes about 1 min and 1 reboot; on Linux - couple seconds to recognize this drive. This thing works on those platforms very good (I continue using all my applications till burning CDs) and all disks were burned by this tool are readable by any CD-drive I have. And I don't need to plug this CD-RW to UPS cause it have it's own battery. So I didn't see any troubles with that tool were talking above, so I didn't need to use Sony's support =).

One click record-no problemsby - June 26, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: I first bought a Que external CD-RW drive. All it did was make coasters of blank CDs. Returned that unit, paid more for the Sony, but have not made one single bad CD since I have owned this. You do need to read the manual (on CD) to set up the drives for max speed recording, don't just use it like it is set up from the factory or it will take more time to record.

Great little drive, Very usefulby - June 24, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: Many many positives, works great for playing MP3s (on CD), burning to CDRs/CDRWs, playing music CDs, and hot-swapping between computers. I don't like the fact that there is no option for standard AA batteries, and that there is no play button on the machine. (You must use the remote that comes with the unit, which is cool most of the time, but a pain if you lose things often enough.)

Plastic Junkby - March 23, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: I had this working fine under Windows 2000 for 6 months. It was until after I switched to Windows XP that it just suddenly DIED on me. Now, it is just a block of plastic. It won't read any discs and displays an "NG disc" message whenever I try to play audio discs. I'm very displeased with Sony. I was expecting a lot longer life-span than this.

Pros:
Cons:
Review: Compusa is selling these for $210. It's great. It's not fast and doesn't include packet writing for XP. However, I haven't coastered any CD's yet. The backup software is actually very good, the rest is ok. The best part of this player is that it's battery-powered so you don't have to carry around an adapter. This is perfect if you use a laptop. At $210, it's worth the slower speed.

Don't buy SONY! - Anything.by - December 19, 2001
Pros:
Cons:
Review: I am using this drive with a SONY laptop. Still it does not work at this point. Never did after 1 year. Sony tech support advised to reinstall the OS and CD software. Which of course you can only use their junk software (see other reviews). This will work for awhile, but stops working. There is no way to load the driver in the OS (windows 2000 pro). Now SONY wants to charge me for supprt after one year. Nice considering we have purchased about 10 SONY products at our office and recomended it to employees and family. That policy is offically changed. Can't afford SONY - can anyone say; planned obsolescence? SONY - stick to cordless phones.

Review: I would just like to comment on all of the negatives. These people obviously are not computer literate, meaning they need help maximizing a window, because this product works perfectly like a portable cdrw and never fails. I am running XP, which one neg. review said it didn't work under, and I didnt even have to install any drivers. All i did was plug it in. I use nero and i also tryed the supplied software. Both work flawless. A+ for this item. Sony knows their stuff.

Writes but doesn't read!by - November 30, 2001
Pros:
Cons:
Review: I got this on the recommendation of a systems person at work (and thank goodness my employer paid for the darn thing). After I, too, found out the hard way that you can't install the drivers on Win 98 first edition, I used my ThinkPad (Win98SE) to burn a CD containing a bunch of photo files and took the disc up to my old Win 95 pc. I might as well have put an old 45 rpm record in there -- because all that happened was "device not ready," over and over. On the Win98 1st ed. computer, we at least were given a "helpful" message telling us that it required an operating system that we apprently don't have on this box. (HelLO, Sony? You mind giving us a clue about some of this stuff?) The lame abCD software intro says, "What could be simpler?" Apparently there is something wrong with us, because it's NOT straightforward and simple to use this to create discs that can be read on a Win95 computer, contrary to what the meager documentation says. We are definitely not happy, but after reading others' tales of woe in trying to get help from Sony, we're not even going to go there. As for those who give this a thumbs up, maybe Sony should take a seat...

Review: I got this because it is one of the few external CD burners that will run on battery power. I wanted to be able to burn CD from my laptop without haveing to find a power supply. I also wanted a mp3 player for my music and this does it all. When I first got it I had some problems burning. I called tech support and they told me to turn off my interenet connection. Now when I burn a CD I shut everything off and let it do its job with out a single problem or error. Its not the fastest or the cheapest but for my specific needs it works great. I love it

Software not compatible with Adaptecby - October 16, 2001
Pros:
Cons:
Review: I previously rated this CR-RW drive very low because the Prassi/Sony abCD packet writing software is not compatible with Adaptec Direct CD, therefore you can't take a Sony created CD-RW disk and read the files in a Teac or HP drive using Adaptec Direct CD software. The good people at Sony through my 101+ questions finally gave me the solution....Uninstall the Adaptec "Direct CD" software and install the Sony/Prassi "abCD" software. It worked! Now I can move files via CD-RW disk to two different computers, one with the Sony drive and one with the Teac drive. I actually didn't remove the Adaptec software I used "msconfig" and unchecked the box for directcd.exe in pc startup. I'm now happy with this device. One positive attribute to abCD software, it formats a cd-rw disk in less than 30 minutes where Adaptec Direct CD takes 60 minutes.

Sony Software not compatibleby - October 8, 2001
Pros:
Cons:
Review: When I create a cd-rw disk using the Sony software that came with the Sony Digital Relay CD-RW drive, and want to read it on another computer with Adaptec software I can't read any of the files on the disk. When I create a cd-rw disk using another brand cd-rw with Adaptec software, the Sony drive with sony software won't let me add files to the disk with re- formating the disk and loosing everthing. The Sony Digital Relay frequently locks up. Sony doesn't tell you that it only works with Windows 98 service pack one available from Microsoft. But you can't download SP1 you have to order it via snail mail.

How did this get such a high rating from CNET?by - October 5, 2001
Pros:
Cons:
Review: I read all the super positive and super negative reviews on this site before I bought this and figured the negative ones were because people hadn't read the directions well. So I bought it anyway and read well. I'm using Mac OS 9.1 with a G3 and found that installation is a mess - called the software manufacturer to walk through extension conflicts. Mac is really shortchanged in the software bundle - no packet writing, etc. The biggest problems were (1) you cannot burn audio CDs at more than 2X - a USB limitation that nobody bothers to mention, (2) the product does not have the appropriate firmware to allow background burning. These two in combination make the burner pretty useless. Plan on not using you computer for 40 minutes at a time. Did I mention that I got some of the wierdest burn errors I've ever seen - "successful" burns where the song numbers changed in the middle of a song!?! The MP3 player feature is really nice, but I have to agree with almost all of the negative comments on this site. It's fragile, loads stupidly, doesn't charge the battery while in operation, is not a true hot-pluggable device, and has lots of nasty little bugs that will take time to discover and work around. If this is a top rated burner, and it's this bad, does anybody make a burner actually worth owning?

Poor support, Win 98 SE conflicts.by - October 5, 2001
Pros:
Cons:
Review: Bought the Sony CRX10U-A2 for it's good reviews and battery operated feature. I was looking for something to use on the road with my Dell Inspiron notebook. The drive worked on the first day only and burned 4 CDR's correctly. After the first reboot the drive was not recognized any more and Sony tech support which was clueless (asking me to reinstall the drivers the wrong way until I pointed out that the instructions tell you not to do that and many other primitive mistakes) then saying the only way is to reformat my drive and reinstall windows!!! I refused and insisted on talking to a second level tech support, who then told me that they know about the problem with Win 98SE and have no fix for it so far, but a software engineer will call me. It is now 5 weeks later and many emails and phone calls later and I still never heard from Sony. All I have now is a $250 paper weight!! Even if this the best CD-RW in the world, what good is it if you cannot use it? Sony tech support needs a lot of help, very long wait 30-45 minutes only to get a completely clueless rude technician who tries to brush you off. I wish I never bought this drive, avoid it.

Best Product Everby - July 7, 2001
Pros:
Cons:
Review: i own a Win98 SE pre-installed compaq presario 1700T notebook and was considering buying the Digital Relay, the media bay cd-rw available on the compaq website ($299, 4x/4x/20x), or the HP drive. i chose the Sony because of its MP3 playback capabilities and for the reliable name, not to mention the fact that its speed rivaled the 1700t-compatible compaq drive while being $40 bucks cheaper (from buy.com). i am extremely happy with my choice. once i figured out that the product had to be turned on for the USB drive to read it as new hardware, installation went smoothly. i also had to install the included CD-Extreme software via windows explorer because a message kept saying that the disk made an illegal operation. i then wrote a cd-rw disk containing 100 mp3s with the cd-extreme, which seemed to be completed in no time. i dont think the speed really matters unless you are dealing with writing cds to full capacity every time u use your drive. then i listened to the cd through the crystal-clear earbuds provided. it recorded perfectly, and the remote with the display sony gives you is also really awesome. if you are using windows 98 first edition, however, do not get this product. u need the second edition or win me, or your os won't read the usb drive. sony says u can download the program through the microsoft website in "Service Pack 1", but microsoft says this is incorrect and the pack doesnt include the software. but if you are running 98 SE or higher, looking for a cd-rw drive, and the DR's mp3 playback capabilities interest you at all, get this drive.

Cool CD-RW that works well!by - July 2, 2001
Pros:

Review: This is my first CD-RW and I bought it online from Sony-Europe. Quick, smooth delivery, but was disappointed there is no paper manual (only on CD), and only installation diskette. I sent an e-mail to support and got the drives by mail. Installation went well, and I have had no problems with any CD (data, audio or copy). Further, I appreciate the possibility to listen to MP3s. Indeed, I am very pleased with my Sony Digital Relay CD-RW! It is cool to make CDs using a laptop and the Sony CD-RW without the need of AC power - it is also a great conversation piece!

GREAT products will have a few glitches...by - June 25, 2001
Pros:
Cons:
Review: This burner is my first and it meets my expectations. While its not incredibly fast, it gets the job done and who cares if it takes a few minutes? Lots of reviews on this site will criticize this product and I'll acknowledge these problems but all you need to do is follow the directions and the technical support. Remember that this drive can't write from an outside disk (Zip, CD, etc). Despite a few preliminary problems and after a few fired discs, this product works wonderfully, is stylish+portable, and it plays mp3 cds. I got this drive from ebay for $230, making it an incredible deal!! Please consider this drive, but just expect to troubleshoot for the first few hours you have it. Hold on...its worth it.

Pros:
Cons:
Review: Overall, the Digital Relay is not bad. Burning speed is ok and the Sony software is quite nice. The problem is that I bought this mainly for its support of MP3 playback which it doesn't do well. There is no directory support which means that if you need to skip forward to the 30th MP3, you are skipping for a while. If you are looking for a good MP3 player, I would look elsewhere.

Costs Too Much, scrappy quality.by - May 7, 2001
Pros:
Cons:
Review: Purchased this gem expecting the best from SONY. I instantly created a CD-R coaster on the first try using the included software to copy an audio CD! On the second try it inserted a blank track between every actual track, but it did manage to record something. The unit's construction was dissapointing for a Sony product. It was made of flimsy plastic, don't exactly know what other reviewers are talking about when they say "durable". It is as durable as a Yugo automobile! It actually looked and felt like it was a No Name "bubble packed" $25.00 CD-player from Walmart! There were also specifically awkward disk loading instructions regarding a "bumper" that has to be contacted by the disk every time it is loaded. Regarding the software, I received a buffer error dialog box, and too many system lock ups for a brand new device. Stay away from this one. Or, try it like I did and see for yourself. User expectations may vary.

The perfect all-in-one CD Burnerby - April 16, 2001
Pros:
Cons:
Review: I got my Digital Relay last week and I was extremely impressed. I accidently pulled out the power cable while it was in the middle of burning a CD, and it kept on burning. Only thing I wish is that the case were made of metal, and maybe the option for a faster burn speed, but I normally burn at 4X for audio anyways so it was no big deal. It's a bit pricier than other CD burners, but you can play MP3's off of CDR or CDRW so you don't need a RIO. This is the future of CD players/burners. I use it to play MP3's in my car and the sound quality is excellent. I turned a corner and it went tumbling without skipping a beat. I love this machine!

Once again, Sony comes out with bigger and better things everyday...

Review: I have an iMac and I want to use Apple's new CD burning technology. I also want a high capacity mp3 player. This is the perfect solution, it is a USB CDRW with discman properties and can play MP3 CDs. It is perfect!, well except for the price. It needs to drop to around $300 to compete with other CDRWs (around $200) and MP3-CD players (around $100). This all in one unit looks perfect for my needs, too bad its expensive. I'll wait for the price to drop like everything else out there.

Review: I conducted extensive testing on this product and found it to be a winner. Easy installation, user-friendly recording software and 100% mobile. I liked the fact that it can record and playback my MP3 files - one CD can hold 100's of MP3 songs. The unit is lightweight, but durable and well-constructed, and uses a standard Sony camcorder battery.
