Once upon a time, Roxio Easy CD & DVD Creator was called simply Easy CD Creator. In version 6.0, Roxio beefs up the name, but the software itself has many of the same pros and cons. On one hand, the vaunted Roxio disc-burning software is as solid as ever; on the other, Creator 6.0 suffers from too many modules, feature duplication, and minimal integration between utilities. In this version, Roxio adds support for all the major writable DVD formats (even DVD-RAM), improves the analog music recorder, and throws in a decent sound editor and music player. But features that truly set it apart from earlier versions--such as the DVD movie-authoring tool--are half-baked. If you're looking for the iLife of the PC platform, Roxio's package is the best you can do, but it isn't nearly as well integrated as Apple's suite. If you're a happy Easy CD Creator 5.0 user, there's little reason to upgrade, and we prefer Nero Burning ROM, which offers powerful burning in a tidier package. Creator 6.0's installer is smart and quick. In a few minutes, it uninstalls your old Easy CD program, reboots, and places version 6.0 on your system. The software's "revamped" interface, on the other hand, is a mixed bag. Roxio has regrouped features, added new modules devoted to music and video authoring and playback, standardized some operations, and given everything a candy-coated, Windows XP sheen. A simple front-end menu gives you one-click entrée to the five major modules: Creator Classic, DVD Builder, Audio Central, Disc Copier, and PhotoSuite.

Roxio's bid for integration is a simple main menu that gives you access to Creator 6.0's main modules.

But dig past this seemingly put-together interface, and you discover that Creator is a mulligan stew of modules with overlapping functions and varying interfaces. Even within a module, you can sometimes do the same thing two or three ways. Creator Classic (the core disc-burning program) is the spitting image of Easy CD Creator 5.0, with its dual-window, Explorer-like interface. The new audio player, on the other hand, looks like Windows Media Player, while the DVD Builder (for assembling video clips) is a train wreck of playback, edit, and import windows.

More to the point, there's little connection among modules. You can, for example, call up Creator Classic from within the audio player to burn a disc. But instead of building library management into the player, Roxio creates a Media Explorer module. Worse, the new Drag-to-Disc feature doesn't have access to the disc-spanning feature built into Classic. Roxio should take a hard look at Apple's new iLife, a suite that performs many of the same tasks as Easy CD and DVD 6.0, but with vastly more elegant integration.

Creator's notable innovation is Drag-to-Disc, a one-stop shop for many burning, writing, and management functions. Instead of loading different modules and flipping through menus to burn a CD or write files to an erasable DVD+RW, just drag the desired data--from Windows Explorer, the desktop, even other applications--onto the 1x2-inch Drag-to-Disc pad. (Ulead DVD MovieFactory 2.0 features a similar tool.) Drag-to-Disc does the rest, and if it needs a nudge, you'll find a passel of functions on a pop-up menu, from formatting to viewing disc contents to running diagnostics. The one limit: you can't automatically span files across multiple discs using Drag-to-Disc. For that, you must fire up Creator Classic.

Creator's real innovation is Drag-to-Disc. Take files from anywhere, drop them here, and D2D will burn them to CD-R/DVD-R or write them to CD-RW/DVD-RW.

Creator Classic is still home base for burning data, music, and bootable CDs and DVDs. It's also where you turn if you want to burn more files than a single disc can hold. To span the data, just select the desired files and click the burn button. When the first disc is full, you're prompted for another blank. You can read these discs like any other, but if a file or folder spans two or more discs, you must load a retrieval utility that Roxio places on every disc you burn. It's simple and easy to use. One potential problem: in our tests, disc spanning worked only with CD-Rs and write-once DVDs (such as DVD-Rs). We couldn't span using either CD-RW or DVD-RW--a bug Roxio says it has not been able to reproduce.

Version 6.0 introduces a new, Roxio-developed music player that, while no MusicMatch, is competent enough. You can easily create playlists, quickly convert an audio CD into a library of MP3s (with no restrictions; Nero offers this feature only on a time- and/or song-limited basis), or burn a CD. (It doesn't, however, support portable MP3 players--yet.) There's a handy built-in sound editor and within it, a tool for recording analog audio.

Color us confused. DVD Builder is a mess of windows, submenus, and a dockable module. There are better ways to assemble movies than this.

Alas, the much-heralded DVD Builder is a mess. The tool lets you assemble movies from various video sources, add music, then burn DVD movies or video CDs. But the process is hardly intuitive. When you capture video or import a clip, you drag it into a little box on the right and view it in a player to the left. Each box holds a movie, but the box is also part of a submenu. Figuring out the hierarchy of submenus, which window does what, and where you can right-click and where you can't, is confusing. Programs such as Dazzle DVD Complete are much more consistent and obvious.

Before Creator 6.0, Roxio telephone tech support was free. Now, it costs $30 per incident, and it's a toll call to boot. There's not much wiggle room here, either: an "incident" is defined as "one issue...regarding a single technical problem or single product usage inquiry." You'll get free support only for problems directly related to installation. You'll get free e-mail support for 90 days; after that, it's gone. Sadly, if you get the "lite" version of Creator 6.0 with your PC or CD- or DVD-burning drive, you won't even get the free e-mail support.

You might be tempted to turn to the Roxio Web site for help. But the site lacks a truly searchable knowledge base. All you get is a neatly organized page of downloads (patches and updates) and a list of fairly detailed FAQs. But if you have a unique problem or a squirrelly error message, the Web site can't help you.

Did exactly what I wanted it to!

Pros: It burned VCD playable on all my DVD players

Cons: None for me!

Review: I wanted to convert my Aiptek Pencam .avi files to a VCD so I could bore my family and friends with my RC Airplane aerial videos. I tried the Aerial Photography group in RC groups for help and advice for conversion and burn software. None of the trial or freeware recommended worked (probably because I am NOT a video codec expert, this is a HOBBY for gosh sake!) and one day I noticed the Roxio Easy CD & DVD burner box in my local Best Buy. I took a $30 gamble (actually $0.00 gamble,as a friend gave me one of those rubbable lottery cards, and I won $30!), and actually read all these other reviews, and decided to open the box anyway. Within 30 minutes of starting the install, I kid you not, I was headed over to my cheapest DVD player, I popped it in, and it WORKED! That is enough for me. I am running XP pro on a 2.8ghz machine with about a gig of ram, and a low class dual monitor video card, and it worked jsut fine. Yippee! I gave it a 10 because it did exactly what I bought it for, and I did not read any manual or tutorial and I am perfectly happy with it!

What a mess!!!

Pros: Haven't yet found any; I'm too busy trying to fix the problems caused by this installation.

Cons: Destabilized my operating system

Review: How I'm kicking myself. I "always" read CNet reviews before buying anything. Somehow I missed doing that this time.

I installed Roxio Easy CD and DVD Creator 6 and my iTunes software became corrupted. I uninstalled and reinstalled my iTunes and iPod software and lost my CD-DVD drive.

Roxio either doesn't answer the phone OR they supposedly give telephone tech support FOR A FEE!! And their online support page is "temporarily" out of service for maintenance.

The extended warranty company, from which I purchased 3-year coverage, won't help me because these are software issues.

Need I say "I'm disgusted!!"

Totally and completely useless.

Pros: It was free.

Cons: Too many to enumerate.

Review: One of the most poorly designed programs I have ever (attempted) to use. There is absolutely nothing that is the least bit user friendly or intuitive about this 'program.' My copy was bundled with my Sony Vaio so I can't get a refund. Probably the most useless and space-wasting bit of garbage I have ever seen.

Audio player is continuously locking up, can't stop it from playing, can't disable the splash screen, very slow making changes, has very few sound editing options, tag editing is brain-dead and doesn't save. Most apps in suite don't launch 50% of time, CD creator or labeler won't launch over 90% of time, and I'm fairly certain it ate some of my system files for lunch. Cons:

Review: I have a win2k system with a plextor cdrw. I have used roxio basic 5.0 for over a year no problems. So anyway, I buy the 6.0 platinum version thinking it will be even better, WRONG!!!!!!!!!!! After I installed it and rebooted my CDRW disappeared from explorer completely. There was a message in device manager about the registry being corrupted. I found out how to hack the registry on the MS site and get the CDRW to show up again. Reinstalled roxio, rebooted, this time the PC would not even boot, just sits there with windows splash screen. Ended up having to reformat the system! If you value your PC, do NOT buy this software, it is awful and buggy! I dont think any company that puts out trash like this is going to be around long anyway.

What problem?

Pros:

Cons:

Review: So far this program has been great! No problem installing it, burining CDs (data and audio), or creating DVDs (simple process, and the capability to do much more). No stability problems either. I must have purchased a different program than most of the other folks that wrote reviews. I would recommend this program without reservation!

Incompatible w/ Ver 5

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Ver. 6 Drag-to-Disc is billed as the successor to Ver. 5 DirectCD; I couldn't write to a CD formatted by the other, making it useless to transport data between computers. Ver 6 jewel cases cannot be opened by Ver 5; Ver 5 jewel cases can be opened by Ver 6, but are impossible to edit.

Much worse of a product

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I have used ver. 4-6 Ver 4 with 98 was awesome. I had the same issues with 5 and 6, but now I have 5 going, for how long????? My advice is make sure you don't have any hardware drivers not loaded and without errors. This product is very pick about what it works with. Also be sure your video card is working properly, I know this sounds crazy, but the program is very dependent on the video card and any errors with the card will cause error in EZCD. Also, don't even waste your time emailing the Roxio support team, you won't hear back, they're useless~!

Thank you Roxio!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I'd like to congratulate Roxio Easy CD & DVD Creator 6.0....For being the one and only software app that crashed my system running Windows XP!....And I've been running XP for over 2 years! Even after 2 updates from their website, and a COMPLETE driver overhaul, I still had to reach for the reset button. Stick to Nero 5.5 or better yet, if you're just burning audio CDs, get Feurio! It's the best and less than half the cost.

Rebate Requests Not Being Honored

Pros: Acceptable performance. All CD/DVD burning programs can be tricky at best. Previous owner of Roxio/Adaptec versions 4 and 5 as well.

Cons: Rebate requests with Roxio have degenerated into a farce game of automated email responses regarding rebate requests which are not being honored. Over the years, I have submitted computer-related rebates too many in number to count. Rebate requests have

Flawed Installation Process

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I started installing CD Creator 6.0 on my desktop. During the install process, CD Creator comments that it has to remove version 5.0 prior to the install. It removes V 5.0. During this process, it manages somehow, - to lose the drivers to the CD drives on the computer. After the reboot, the system cannot locate any CD Drives...ANY!!! Turns out that if you go to their website - when it is up and working - there is a workaround that involves a manual reconfiguration of the registry. Try explaining that to a new user or even what how they could ever figure that out. This to me is an outrage - that a company like Roxio - that should know better - releases software that really does damage your computer - and basically doesn't even comment on it other than an obscure note in their support section. Three emails to them asking about this were never answered. Why bother having a support staff - or maybe that's the point - they don't. I'm only sorry that I didn't read the reviews here before I bought and installed the product.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This is one of the best software that roxio have I have a HP pavilion 763n with a HP DVD Writer 200i and this software works fine without problems is faster and easier to use. A big improvement over v5

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I have used this for all my burning needs, and it has NEVER given me a problem. I think alot of problems with this software are caused by the user themselves. Just because you have the software and a burner doesn't guarantee success. CD/DVD burning requires some know how and patience to get it right. I use EZCD v6 on my home-built system running an AMD 1800+ processor with 384 MBs of RAM and Windows XP and I have NEVER had a problem. I can even burn working back up copies of DVD movies and XBOX games.

Perfect so far...

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Wow, are there a lot of differences of opinions on this web site!!! I hardly know what to think after reading all the reviews. Well, after returning Pinnacle Studio 8 (BEWARE) I was only allowed to exchange software and the only other video editor the store had was Roxio 6. After reading the reviews here I decided to do a custom installation and only loaded the "DVD Builder". I fired it up, went through the three step process and presto I had a 3 min video made in 10 minutes- without even having read the manual. I think Roxio should consider packaging the dvd builder seperatly and more people might be happy. I agree with other reviews here- who needs all those other apps? We've all got them already.

Has worked ok so far

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Although my Indi dvd burner (TDK) came with Nero Express which worked fine, I upgraded EasyCD Creator to v6, and so far have been quite happy. Although all I have done to date is burn data DVDs, they have generally burned without a hitch. The nice feature i like is that I can burn files over a network, which makes my life easier since a great amount of my data is not local. This is in contract to express which does not give this option. Anyway, I will relay more information as I continue to test out the software-- including burning DVDs for playback, etc. Sunil

I was a long time Roxio user. After this, I'll never buy Roxio again!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I've been using Roxio Easy CD creator since version 4. I upgraded to 5, Platinum version-- I was still happy. So I was very excited when Roxio was coming out with a CD/DVD utility. I pre-ordered it and installed it the day it was delivered. BOY, THAT WAS A MISTAKE. At the time I had a DELL Dimension 8100, with all the bells and whistles, 1.5 Ghz P4, w/512 MB of RAM, two CD-RW drives and a combo DVD drive. As soon as I installed the software, none of my drives were found. Luckily, I looked on their message board (NOT easy to find this message too), and learned that Windows 2000 users "may experience problems" with their drives after installing. I had to go into my registry and delete strings from several locations. Once it did start to recognize my drives, it wouldn't read from my DVD drive. I was throroughly ticked-off. So I called Roxio to get help, only to find out that a.) I could only get help between, 8am and 6pm Pacific time, not convenient customer service hours for the millions of people who live on the east coast and work for a living. b.) If I wanted help I could call another number (which was not toll-free) and I'd have to pay $35 for help. Screw that. So now, my DVD drive is being recognized, but still won't read any disc I stick in it. My computer is running like molasses (thanks to all the stupid apps that get installed to run in the background on startup). So I returned the software and went out and bought a new computer. After all.. once the dvd drive is messed up, I might as well spend my money on a new system entirely. Now I have a smokin' Sony VAIO, but I'm still deciding what DVD-rw utility to get. Definitely won't be ROXIO!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: read what all these "PC users"...or so-called "knowledgeable" people had to say and can only say it works for me and it sure beats NERO by 10 miles. One thing I found out that these people did which was a sure mistake was download updates to the program. THIS WAS OPTIONABLE! Duh! IF IT WORKS, DON'T FIX IT! Not only that- it seems that these people already had messed up their OS previously to installing Roxio that I am surprised that thier sys even boots! I know several people that have it and it works great. Nightmare? Nope! Remember, its the operator, not the PC. Ya really want to mess up your OS then go ahead and buy Nero. But don't come crying to me or CNET for NOT recommending this one

Those thumbs-down are liars...

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I've been using Roxio Easy CD Creator 5 for a long time now and yeah, sure, it was unstable... only in XP though... in XP, without the updates it would just crank up your system and luckily you could just close it with no prob. Updates are evrything, even Windows needs upddates right? If you set to mind, Roxio places a lot of features in a way that they take the risk of making an instable program so they have to create updates for it.. just like in windows. In Music CD burning, it's great, unlike Nero where Overburn is the only great thing. In Roxio Easy CD &DVD Creator 6 you could add features like making the music live, or just add cool effects on the music itself. People who doesnt take time UPDATING are people who gets most of system and program crashes. Also, Roxio isnt made for slow PC's, it never was, accept it. Well, that's it.. to those with the thumbs-down and got offended, i'm sorry, if you think i did so pls. e-mail me at robertviper08@yahoo.com well, see ya!

Locked up my Dell when disk is inserted into DVD drive

Pros:

Cons:

Review: My Dell with an NEC DV-5700A DVD drive locks up as soon as I insert a CD to copy to the CD-RW drive. It worked with the updates on V 5. This started as soon as I installed Version 6, and 3 downloads, installs, and reboots in correct sequence of current updates. After 47 hours of complete computer Diagnostics using Dell software, the DVD drive, both hard drives, the CD-RW drive, and all components of the computer test as working correctly. Uninstalling the Easy CD Creator V6 immediately restored the DVD drive functionality. This is with all updates current for WIN XP Home edition. No response from Roxio e-mail technical support in a day.

Beware of Two Missing Key Features

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I used this for couple days -- I already found two major bugs / missing features. 1) Please note that VCD limit is 650MB. Most CD-R today is 700MB and because of the uniqueness of VCD format, a 700MB disc can actually fit up to 800MB of video. Please note this can be done in Version 5, but somehow version 6 is a little backward. (Roxio said this will include this in a future service pack.) 2) When making chapters in a DVD movie -- you have to go back to the chapter menu to play the next chapter. There is no continuous play. Image playing a movie with 20 chapters, and you have to manually start each chapter. (Roxio said no plan to fix this in the near future. This is only a basic DVD tool.)

Pros:

Cons:

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I've used Nero a few times and don't like the interface, its hard to figure things out and lacks the features I found w/ the new Roxio product. Roxio's v.6 got this new DVD builder that allows me to play with my videos, and photos. It let's me do everything. EZ was good when it was Adaptec

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I've been using EZ-CD for almost 10 years. At one time it was a good compact program and was simple to use did a good job at what is was suppose to do. Upgrades to support new hardware came out without having to wait too long. Bug fixes came out. That all changed when two things happened. The first was a downward trend in quality of support when Adaptec spun off the product to Roxio. The big death blow seems to have come once Roxi cut the sweat heart deal with Microsoft to develop the burner support that MS now includes in it's products. Roxio no longer has the time or else no longer feels the need to support the end users of their retail packages since they are making money off of Microsoft. I purchased my first copy of Nero when the EZ-CD OEM that came bundled with a new burner was an old version not well supported under Windows 2000. I had a then brand new Roxio version I wanted to install but alas no driver support from Roxio and after three months of checking they finally told me they had no idea when or if they would be supporting the drive. Of course by that time I had purchased my frst copy of Nero and istalled it since it had full support for my new hardware and OS.

Roxio doesn't deliver...again

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Everyone knows that version 5 was a joke. I installed it on my WinXP machine, and iit locked it up, needing a reformat. I was told (after an hour of long distance phone support) that you had to install a patch *BEFORE* the system restarted after the program installed. I see this as difficult because the installer restarted my machine by itself... The new version 6 is just adds a couple of cosmetic upgrades (if you like cluttered), and a pathetic excuse for a dvd authoring tool. None of the modules are integrated at all. Expect the program to hang regularly when you are browsing for a file or folder. Also expect the interface to not refresh after a pop-up window goes away. If you want a CD burning tool, look no further than Nero. If you want a DVD authoring tool, get Pinnacle or even Ulead. Roxio will do neither for you. I dont understand why this program is so popular; just look at how many other disgusted users there are. Oh yeah, and expect to wait on the phone for at least an hour to talk to a real human being at Roxio (long distance, no doubt). Do yourself a favor and dont give Roxio the chance to hang your machine.

Upgrade Is WAY overpriced!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Easy CD Creator 4 came with my Dell laptop. I had problems with it, so in Oct. of 02, I upgraded to version 5 Platinum - had to pay full price for the program! When I learned of version 6, I looked into it on Roxio's web site. It looked intriguing, so I looked for upgrade info. The only pricing on their site indicates that you have to buy the full program to get the upgrade ($99 boxed or $79 download) - a ridiculous option. So I wrote to them and complained. They sent me a message with a link to a page offering upgrades for $69 boxed and $59 download - still ridiculous. And people wonder why there's so much bootlegging going on. Roxio also sent me a PDF (for people that purchased the product after 1/18/03). These folk can upgrade for $19.95! It should be free for them!!!! Roxio is greedy and their upgrade process is pathetic. For the $19.95 upgrade, they ask you to print out and complete the PDF form and fax it to them... with absolutely no instructions on how to send payment!!! I guess they want you to fax them the $19.95! The bills are no problem, but I'll bet the coins will jam your fax. I didn't like doing it, but I ordered the $59 download. I see little improvement - other than interface enhancements. I tried using the DVD project builder. My system hanged when I tried navigating to a file on an external hard drive. Just clicking on the external drive caused this! Roxio has a lot to learn.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I know that this review is for version 6 but I'd just like to add a couple of comments about 5 Platinum after having read other comments about version 6 on your webpage. I've used 5 successfully since it first came out without any problems whatsoever under Win 98 2nd edition using it with a TEAC 4x4x32 Writer. However, since I installed a Liteon 40x12x48 writer and updated the programme with the 5.5 and the 5.5.32 patches so it could see my new writer, the Soundstream programme just "locks up" and the programme crashes. Otherwise the rest of it still continues to work fine. By the way, I have the latest NERO installed as well but I still feel that Roxio still have a slight edge on it at this moment in time.

Big Improvement over Ver. 5

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Ver. 5 was plagued with problems from the get-go. It caused too much system instability, and many parts of it would crash. I approached purchasing ver 6 with some trepidation. However, I did not have any problems with installation, or creating a CD. There are those that have had problems, but many of these appear related to conflicting programs. I'd agree that Roxio's support is poor, but ver. 6 is a dramatic improvement over ver. 5. That being said, if you're happy with Nero, that's o.k. Nero is a good program. I personally prefer the ease of use and interface of Roxio
