Is the video software market going downscale, or are developers finally realizing that people don't want an excess of editing tools if they can't figure out how to use them? Whatever the case, ease of use seems to be the watchword in the current wave of so-simple-your-grandmother-could-use-it video apps. Pinnacle Expression, a $49 CD- and DVD-authoring app, makes video production as easy as pie and produces great-looking results.

It doesn't get any easier
After installing Pinnacle Expression--a quick and painless process--you'll find yourself staring at three of the biggest, friendliest icons across the top of the screen and one of the easiest interfaces ever, outside of software designed for tots. The big buttons take you to the main content areas: import, edit, and export.

The import screen displays an enormous video camera on the left and a list of imported video clips on the right. Unlike most video tools, including Roxio VideoWave, Expression won't capture footage from analog cameras--it needs a digital video (DV) camera or a VCR with a FireWire connection. It will import video (AVI, DV, or MPEG-1 or -2) or photos (BMP, JPEG, PCD, PCT, TGA, WMF, TIFF) that are already on your hard drive. Expression automatically breaks up your video into scenes for easier editing.

Editing for the low-tech crowd
We have yet to see a newbie-level video-editing tool that makes the process both feature rich and simple. Some apps, such as VideoWave and Video Explosion Deluxe, throw in a spate of advanced features and hope users will grow into them. Expression skips those features entirely, offering only simple trims or a tool for combining clips, but that's all. Don't plan on working with timelines, overlays, transitions, or soundtracks, either; Expression doesn't offer any such tools.

Pinnacle went a little too far making this product easy to use; we'd prefer a few more tools. While fast and simple, this app won't grow with your movie-making skills. Oddly enough, if you're making only a slide show with digital still images, you have more editing possibilities: the ability to set how long each image will display on the screen, transitions, and soundtracks. These are tricks that we'd like to work on video, too.

So many menus
We particularly like Expression's DVD menu-creation tools, which, like the slide-show tool, are much stronger than the video-editing options. After you've imported video or pictures, Expression arranges them into a sample menu in the tool's preview screen. The Style Chooser, a small drawer on the left side of the screen, allows you to choose from 44 menu templates, 6 of which have full-motion backgrounds. Or, you can click the Custom Menu button at the bottom of the Style Chooser to create your own image combination from existing templates. If you don't like any of the templates, which are attractive but not as professional as the ones found in Apple iMovie or VideoWave, simply import one of your own pictures to use as a background.

Once you're ready to burn a disc, Expression offers video CD (VideoCD), Super VideoCD (SVCD), and DVD. We found the burning speeds to be roughly average and the resulting quality acceptable, if not outstanding. Expression also includes a typically easy-to-use label-making component, which can automatically make professional-looking booklets and CD labels that incorporate the button pictures from your onscreen menu.

Aside from the software, Expression comes with a plastic DVD case, a plastic tool that helps you apply disc labels so that they line up with the case edges, and a few blank labels ready for your printer. Should you have any trouble and need tech support, Pinnacle offers well-organized and extensive FAQs, forums, and e-mail help through its Web site. Sadly, though, there's no phone support.

The right tool for the right person
If video editing sounds like nothing but a headache to you and you simply want to get your footage onto DVDs and into the hands of your friends, Pinnacle Expression is a great tool. It isn't full featured, and at $49, it's priced a tad too high, but it is a winner for ease of use and attractive results.

Expression features a preview interface that's as easy as pie. The Style Chooser, on the left, offers a variety of templates, while the meter at the bottom shows how much time is left on your disc.

HANGS on almost anything I tried

Pros: pros ? Hu ???

Cons: All I could get out of Expression was HANGS, hangs, hangs, never got any further than importing a mpeg file.

Stick with Roxio.

Pros: Does well with importing video from, say, a VHS player. Allows you to see in thumbnail view, text/titles view, or scene-to-sound view.

Cons: Takes forever to encode. Back up to hard drive is a whole directory of files instead of one .iso file like Roxio. Says it requires 256MB, I had 512MB and ended up doubling that, and the program would still crash with under 1 hour compilations. Thanks,

Rubbish, would not waste anymore time!

Pros: Almost nice GUI, but fails to display chapter thumbnails. Promises alot but fail to deliver!

Cons: Fails to even compile. Setup a new PC with only Win2K and this software, DVD-R (supported), 82Gig space, 512M mem, still fails at 0%, then 2%. CPU at 100% with no power save features enabled! Well, it was free with writer!

So much promise, so little return!

Pros: Simple to use interface which promises so much as an introduction for the novice.

Cons: Delivers so little as it crashes 9 out of 10 times. Can't comment on the quality of the results.

Great time waster

Pros: Very easy to generate very neat slide shows with music and transistions....

Cons: ...but if you want to burn them to a disc, forget it. Never got mine to work. Tech support is non existant. Website is useless. Literally 100's of people on website with same issues, no one every resolves them

Too slow to be of any practical use

Pros: Don't know, can't be bothered to wait for it to do anything

Cons: Took two hours to perform 2% of a DVD burn on a PII 450MHz machine with 256Mb of RAM Unfriendly user interface - what's with this trend of having icons hidden away that don't look like buttons?

Hangs on compile for DVD

Pros: Menu creation easy, previews OK. Free with DVD burner - it needed to be!

Cons: crashes computer on compile and never creates a DVD. Original video edited in Premier - burns to DVD with other software but, although preview OK and menus god will not burn to DVD.

Read Beyond The Same Opinions!

Pros: I noticed after looking at all the "COMMENTS" left here on CNET that half were written on the same date! More so, those that were not written on the same date all had the same spelling error or grammer profile. This is a NOVICE piece of software. Just

Cons: Customer Support is near non-existant.

If only it can finish burning

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Love the way the music fits the slideshow, easy and fast to use. BUT WHAT'S THE POINT IF YOU CAN'T MAKE A FINISHED DISC OF ANY TYPE!!!! Takes forever to render and never finishes burning.

Agree with everyone else...

Cons:

Review: Everyone else has stated the problems - simple interface, but you never get a burned DVD.

Very bad experience using it

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I usually do not write comments but this time I feel I have to write something about it, because I am really disappointed the Pinnacle Expression. I used it to create a DVD-R using existing well-coded Mpeg2 files, but it is very very slow, regardless in Pentium IV 1.8GHz or Pentium III 600 MHz, two of my PC's. One thing really puzzles me is, in either PC, the CPU usuage was only about 25-30 percent. And the program IS running, not non-responding. No huge I/O activity. No DVD buring activity either. Then why isn't it running faster, to use 100% CPU??? It took one hour, only incrementing from 50% to 52% complete in preparing the DVD contents, not even the burning yet-- a separate process. And then it always errored out at about 70%, "Error to Complie File", somethibg like it. Stupid. I am an IT professional myself. I keep my PC environment simple. There're enough memory and hard disk space in my PC's. There's no registry mess up. If there's anything wrong, it must be the program (I already downlaoded the lastest update from Pinnaclesys.com). I am very disappoined. It is such a simple straightforward and simple program yet they don't know how to code it well.

VCD-DVD

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I tried out the trial version and it seems you can make a VCD-DVD. However this is disabled in the trial version and I am not sure if it actually a feature. It seems to accept my DVD media and make 6 hours worth of media. However the inputs are greyed out in trial so I don't know for sure. Anyone know?

Very Disappointing!!!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Purchased new PC w/cd-dvd burner. Expression came with the pc. Can't burn a dvd with this program. It runs for HOURS!!!! yet does not finish burning complete cd. PC has 512MB memory and a 1.5GHz Centrino chip. Should be more than sufficient.

Maybe if it worked...

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I have tried this program on both my XP and 98SE systems, both with more than enough power to handle this program. Unfortunately, it doesn't work. It stops responding during simple operations and has made both computers extremely unstable. Also, "customer support" clearly does not want to help make it work. I could not believe that so many others have had the exact same problems as I have and Pinnacle still has done nothing to fix it. Garbage.

Horrible picture quality

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I tried this in the hope of find a stable program that would create a VCD from digital pictures. Well it does but not very well. First it likes to hang up when creating the VCD. Second, once I was able to make a VCD the picture and sound quality were completely unacceptable. I have Paint Shop Photo Album 4.0 (it is isn't perfect either) the picture and sound quality are 100x better and will play on both a computer and DVD. Save you money and buy something else.

Don't waste money on this trashware

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Glad I didn't spend money on Expression - got it for a full rebate at CompUSA. Consistently crashes my W2k machine when "Creating Disc Content". The editor is nice, but that's about it. No help from Pinnacle and nothing useful on their "support" site.

CNET Reviews are BOGUS!!!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: More often than not, CNET gives great reviews on products that users give terrible reviews on. It's apparent that CNET reviewers ignore or minimize product flaws. I have used numerous products given high ratings by CNET and most of them have been junk! However, when I've based my purchases on the user reviews, I've found the user reviews to be consistently accurate. My guess is that their reviews are slanted to please their sponsors and advertisers. What gives CNET?

This Product Does Not Work

Pros:

Cons:

Review: As the other reviews here and on the discussion forum of the Pinnacle web site make clear, this is a defective product. It will not encode DVDs properly. System crashes whenever you're attempting to encode and burn a DVD. Pinnacle has offered absolutely no solution or help to its consumers.

This product stinks!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I thought I got a good deal when I pick up this software for $10( after rebate) from ComUSA. But then when I tried to input .avi to the inport window, it crashes and stucked with scene detection dialog box. I then turn off the scene detection and got it imported, then it crashed( not responding ) in the preview window. Then I tried go directly to the Cd Creation phase and press the 'start' button. I waited for about an hour and it is still hung at 2% complete. The window task manager indicated it is not reponding. In all, this software not even able to produce a single VCD(lowest resolution) for me!!I ost $10 but I feel sorry for all of you who spend $$$ on this piece of trash !!

OK, but what about DVD+R?

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Makes DVD+RW's, as specified in the manual, but not DVD+R's as insisted in the very same manual(s.21)! When you buy a product (even a cheap one) you have the right to expect, that the advertising and supported material aren't misleading. No signs the manufacturer is intending to do something about the situation. So I'm waiting and burning my family videos on DVD+RW's.

Big Waste of Money and Time

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I purchased this software to simply create slideshows. Loaded on a w98 PC and everything except audio worked. Picture quality is poor. Loaded it on an XP machine and could not successfully burn a CD. Save your money and time look elsewhere.... Online Support and tel # is inadequate at best

Photodex ProShow Far Superior

Pros:

Cons:

Review: After creating several SVCD's with Pinnacle Expresison and finding a lot of picture distortion & sound problems in any picture other than the first, I decided to opt for another program. Photodex Proshow Gold is far superior to Pinnacle and all the other VCD softwares I've tried. It creates VCD's in several different formats including the higher resolution XVCD and can create PC versions also. After my unfortunate waste of money and time with Pinnacle and several other softwares I have finally found a program that I think is a bargain and not just a waste of money.

great software if it worked...

Pros:

Cons:

Review: couldnt decide between dazzle dvd complete or pinnacle expression, went with pinnacle's lower price tag. big mistake. creating a project was easy and the features allowed a fair amount of creativity and design for the dvd, unfortunately thats as far as i got..! when trying to burn to disc i get to 50% and then it crashes..everytime, no matter what i do. emailed support they replied with an automated email (useless) and i havent heard anything from them since, its been a few weeks. now that i spent $40.00 on this software i dont have enough to buy dazzle, thanks a lot pinnacle...

Simple stuff ...

Great Program if Pinnacle Upgrades Encoding

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Pinnacle has a very nice program IF they can correct some of the bugs in the current edition. The SVCD slide shows that I have made with 1280x960 digital pictures came out with jittery pixels. The music in the first chapter was adequate, but the rest of the chapters were barely audible. Again, I do like the simple interface because I wanted to purchase the program for my mother and a friend who likes simplicity, but until some of these bugs are corrected, I can't see spending more money on this program. Only if these bugs are fixed will I purchase again or recommend to others.

This software does not work

Pros:

Cons:

Review: To many problems to list. Don't waste your money. Go to the Pinnacle support site, read the problems with make disk.

Quite good! Easy and fun to use!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Have been trying out the trial download for almost a week now and find it to be quite simple and cleanly designed. The interface is a bit confusing at first but is really quite easy once you've played around with it. I've only worked on the slideshow feature so far and I love the way it fits the slides into the music. The video quality on the VCD format is acceptable although a higher resolution output would be most ideal. The output looks ok on a 25 -32 inch TV but deteriorates quite a bit on larger screens especially on a 52 inch projection TV. But it is a very easy way to produce slide shows for TV output that you can instantly share with friends. The way it is now I'll still buy this product for sure!

A Waste Of Money

Pros:

Cons:

Review: After two weeks of calling and waiting for the trial download version (which to date never materialized), I bought this at Fry's Electronics for $34.95- $25.00 rebate. Now I know why they don't want anyone using the trial download. Even at 10 bucks this program is a waste of money. I found picture loading to be very slow and rearranging the picture order is somewhat cumbersome. The transitions offered up are only a few basic wipes, fades and dissolves. Very disappointing. Burning a cd is also slow. I burned a slideshow in SVCD format and the quality turned out worse than another slideshow I created in VCD format while using a competing product. I also experienced program crashes. If you want to burn digital picture slideshows, buying and using this product will likely disappoint you. From my research, Pinnacle seems to have a lot of wonderful programs out there. Unfortunately, EXPRESSION is NOT one of them.

User Rating: 4/10

Program crashes when I try create slide show.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: When creating slideshow I get %50 completed in transcoding and the program crashes. Support has not responded in four days. No telephone support listed
