"Good but hardly "Audiophile" grade"
Pros: Solid build
Cons: Sound ok but not great
Summary: After my 20-year-old Denon DVD-1700 CD player died, I went in search of a replacement - turns out it's almost impossible to find a truly great-sounding CD player anymore! And I have a perfectly good DVD upscaler, so the only other options to get good audio were to spend $2k on (another) home theater receiver and hope for the best.
So I tried the Onyko DX 7555 based on its good reviews, but was quite disappointed. It's solidly built, feels substantial, and I like the simplicity of a device devoted to just playing music... but it came nowhere near my old Denon in sound quality. You could hear the difference right away, esp. in vocals and any higher-frequency sounds (orchestra strings, cymbals, etc).
Back it went, and I bought a Benchmark DAC-1 USB instead, hooked up to a $44 disk player - wow, this thing absolutely rocks, even out-does my old Denon!
Anyways, I applaud Onkyo for not abandoning the CD player market entirely, but this one isn't quite up to level it aspires to.
