In nightclubs around the world, old-fashioned vinyl turntables are still the tools of the trade. But with its turntablelike interface and rock-solid performance, Pioneer's CDJ-1000 CD player deserves a spot alongside the record players in those DJ booths. Unfortunately, the player's professional price tag will keep many home DJs from owning it.

The $1,299 (list price) CDJ-1000 is fairly large (12.5 by 14.5 by 4.2 inches and 9.26 pounds) and must rest on a tabletop because CDs load into a slot on the front edge. Around back, you'll find both analog and digital audio outputs. But all of the real action happens on top, where there's a touch-sensitive jog dial--roughly the size of a 45rpm record--made to look like a plastic turntable. To the right is a pitch-control slider used to speed up or slow down songs. A large, colorful LED display above the platter shows most of the necessary information. There are lots of buttons scattered across the top of the player, but because of its size, it never feels too crowded.

Inside, this player is quite unlike most consumer CD players. It has a 16X CD drive that reads CD and CD-R/RW data very quickly, and there's a large memory buffer, so you can scan flawlessly forward and backward through songs. You can hear the whir of that high-speed drive when you're using the player, but it doesn't degrade the final audio quality.

Just like a record
Record players have survived for so long in nightclubs because no DJ-oriented CD player has been able to truly mimic a turntable. But that's where Pioneer really gets it right. The CDJ-1000 has the same sort of tactile and visual interface as the much-vaunted Technics SL-1200MK2 turntable. Place your finger on the turntable, and the CD stops playing. Let go, and the music starts again. Two knobs allow you to fine-tune the player's stop and start response speed, making it behave even more like a record player. You can rotate the platter forward and backward, and the sound you hear is identical to that of cueing and scratching a record.

In our testing, the CDJ-1000 never stuttered or skipped no matter how fast we back-cued or how furiously we scratched. The LED in the center of the turntable appears to rotate, giving you a crucial visual aid when you're cueing up a song. In the larger display, you can quickly glance at a graphic representation of a tune to easily gauge how much time remains, where a break is, and other necessary visual cues that you're used to seeing on an LP.

The CDJ-1000 has quite a few tricks up its sleeve, too. The Reverse switch lets you instantly play your CDs backward and forward. You can easily repeat a portion of a song, thanks to the Loop function. And you can set the three Hot Cue buttons for instantaneous access to any point in your CD. The player lets you store cue points and loop points for up to 10 CDs in its memory so that you won't need to reset these every time you put the disc in the player. Insert a card into the MultiMedia Memory Card (MMC) slot, and you can store cue and loop data for up to 10,000 discs.

Does it sound like vinyl?
Audiophiles and vinyl addicts may never be completely satisfied with CD audio quality, but the CDJ-1000 sounds very good. It uses a 1-bit digital-to-analog converter and Legato Link Conversion, which Pioneer claims adds third- and fifth-order harmonics to the CD audio, extending the frequency response up to 40KHz (CD audio stops at 20KHz). The added frequency response is supposed to make CDs sound more like analog recordings. While we could hear a subtle difference between the CD and the LP versions of Jay Denes's Music and Wine, we didn't necessarily prefer one over the other. We were able to seamlessly mix records and CDs as long as we paid enough attention to the EQ settings on each source.

For those willing to shell out the dough, the CDJ-1000 opens up a whole new world of possibilities. Unlike previous DJ-oriented CD players that required a bit too much practice and patience to master, this player's learning curve is much shorter. We were able to create music on a PC, burn it to CD, and play it at a party that same night. And no record player we've seen has a built-in loop function.

Editor's note: The CDJ1000 carries a one-year warranty. However, be sure to check that you're buying from an authorized Pioneer retailer. The company will not honor the warranty on products purchased from unauthorized resellers.

this product is amazing

Pros: This cd player is one if not the best dj-style cd-player it gives you the freedom to more possibilities.

Cons: It still not quite like the vinyl record feeling

Review: In my opinion I think the cdj-1000 is very well-crafted and as much as it gets criticism about digital dj's but i can tell from experience no matter what u do behind the decks, it all comes down to wether u can perform and entertain no matter what piece of equipment you have.

best DJ turtable ever! Better then vinyl turntable

Pros: scratches exactly like vinyl turntable, a lot of special features

Cons: priced too high

Review: well what can I say? I don't actually have the CDJ-1000, but I have used it many many times for hours and it is extremely good. If you are a professional CD DJ buy these. I am surely going to buy these as soon as I get money. They scratch extactly like vinyl turntable and I couldn't tell the difference between the scratch. Also the turtable has many cool special effects, however they're priced way too high, I wish they were a few hundred dollars cheaper. Otherwise these are great toys for a DJ. I also recommend DJM-600. Pioneer one of the best companies in the world. They make the best DJ equipment ever. SO STRONG, LONG LASTING. Ciao!

every headliner dj requires these

Pros: armin van buuren, mark farina, dj rap, tiesto, james zabiela and others all personally agreed this was the most reliable choice for a cd deck. Having used these for 2 years I fully agree its the most relibale solution.

Cons: pricey...but then again I made all the money back in rentals ;)

A time saving utlity

Pros:

Cons:

Review: After trying it, the CDJ 1000 is by far the most useful mixing tool both at home and in the clubs. The fact that you can store ALL those cue points (and pitches!), manipulate even your own tracks and wave files like a record...in just a matter of seconds says it all! I don't want to play my records more than once. I love pure sound...but it must be kept as pure as possible. What takes me a week to accomplish in remixing, I can achieve in just a few hours...I simply don't care what others think...I intend to own at least 4 of these bad boys!

Any serious "cd"j must have

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I've owned a pair since they debuted last year and have had no problems with them. I have had many vinyl dj's compliment on their true to touch feel and sound. If you have the cash these are top notch for any home spinner as-well.

As Close As You Get to Vinyl

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Being a turntablist and a remixer/producer, these things are invaluable. I can mix a beat/tune and then try em out on the turntables before spending 1,200 on releasing 100 twelve inches...and I know how they're going to perform before I get the acetate. I use em at the club...but as usual, old skool vinyl haters never take it seriously until I have my twelve inches on the shelf. These narrow minded djs and industry heads make me laugh coz they wonder why I'm streets ahead of them in terms of bangin' turntablist releases and tunes...wake up and smell the coffee boys!!!

Be in with technology!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Yeah, its true that you need turntable skills, but these days people don't go to clubs to look at how a DJ is spinning...they just want good music to get their groove on. With the CDJ-1000 you can create music that will blow their minds!

its the bomb.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I played with these at the local music outlet and let me tell all the vinyl dj's out there.... this is a "cd" player that will blow your mind. Just the scratching effect alone sold me. I played with this thing for almost an hour and i am hooked.

finally

Pros:

Cons:

Review: this player has got to be one of the best tools to come out in a long time. a little more than the competition, but once you play with these babies, and tested out the numarks, american audio's and even the new denon 9000's, you will know why you went the extra mile and money for this cd player. another great piece of equipment from pioneer.

an upgrade...

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Alot of people i see are complaining about the price, but for me, someone who bought the 500II's back in '96, the price is fine. The 500's cost that much back then, and they can't do half the stuff that the new units can. The 1000's seem to have a much tighter feel to them. Faster load times. Much more stable then the 500's. The increased resolutions in the tempo control is almost paralyzing for someone who is use to the 500's. It freaks me out to have that much control. One thing i have noticed from mixing on the 500's for six years compared to the 1000's is the difference in the jog wheels. You have to move the jog wheel quite alot to make the 1000's bend the pitch, were as the 500's you barely had to touch the jog wheel to get the desired corrections. This will take time to get use to. Also I don't like the front load mech. It is too slow when compared to the 500's (sure i have scratched some cd's because of the latch, but hey life is tragic) and it is a complicated system that can fail and be hard to replace. But other then those two draw backs, I am really happy with the unit. I am going to get a second one in about a month and add to my other three players and turntable.

The greatest DJ invention the last 20 years

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Fast que points. Never skips while scratching. Loops. Yeah it's expensive but look at the ROI (that's return on investment). Records need to get broken in and then get worn down. CD's won't. How many times does your ahhhhh effect get worn out? You don't need to buy doubles of anything anymore... you don't need to buy records anymore (thanks to the Internet). Just press your own CD's. Not to mention there are so many songs that never get pressed to vinyl. Yeah, there may be some bootlegs but only if you're lucky. Also, you can make your own scratch effects on a CD. Think about it. You don't have to search for a particular phrase to scratch. You could record your own and then scratch it on the CDJ-1000. The only thing bad that I didn't like was that the pick up wasn't the same as a 1200. But I can get used to it since there are fast que points. Think of it. You can go to any effect or any part of a track in the press of a button. Meaning, you don't need that yahoo by your side nodding his head and handing you records. Believe me, the ROI is worth it. Think of it, every 12" is worth about $6-$8. If you're in a record pool... OK $90-$120/mo. You'll make the money back in no time. Plus no more record crates to carry!

Great features, built to last.

Pros:

Cons:

Pros:

Cons:

Inertia

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I feel for those who've invested countless $$$ and hours seeking wax. And I can understand why you might resent this product. Some of you lash out, pointing out that with a cdj, one can't operate like cool herc (remember him?). But c'mon, the fact we're using vynil is just a mistake of history anyway -- if cdjs would have been around in the mid 70's, you "purists" would be holding on to them for dear life instead. It's negative inertia. Bottom line: with this product, I get unlimited (and often free) source material dowloaded to my computer at home. That means my ability to make innovative, bangin' music is infinitely greater than that of a dj using Tech 12s. By all means, stick with the crates fellas.

Best CD turntable available.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Great new tool for all. If you've already spun vinyl for 15 years like me you can't call it cheating. Besides, it's what comes out of the speakers that matters. I know a lot of wanabees with the best equipment that can't produce squat !

A must for any serious DJ

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I've only tried a demo modle in a store, I spent almost an hour just playing with it. I would be proud to own one or two of these along side my Tech 12's. The reponse is exactly like vinyl from cuing to beatmatching. For the naysayers who say that it is a cheat toy, I challenge you to at least try one, your opinion may change. The CDJ-1000 is great for producers who want to play their unreleased material. I personally do not like how normal CD decks function, but this product will change the face of DJing.

Great players.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: If you're already using CDs then junk in your old players and get a pair of these. Easy to use, sound great, excellect features, good build, pioneer reliability and good looks. There'll be a few hardcore vinyl jocks who will argue, just like some people once argued that the world was flat.

Impressive and it works!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: It's useless to argue vinyl vs. cd when the changing times will allow for impressive leaps like this one. The CDJ-1000 is very impressive and it works very well, accomplishing what the company claims. As with most new technologies, the price tag is on the high side. Nonetheless, the availability of mp3s and cds nearly balances the equation. Performance is stellar and this tool can help enhance the skills of djs at all levels. If you got the cash, the CDJ-1000 is worth the investment.

Good addition for the mobile DJ

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This piece of equipment is a good addition for the mobile DJ. Not only does it save your butt from lugging around crates of records. But it also expands the variety of music you can play and opens you up to some of those hard to find remixes and releases. The effects are crazy and the real time scratch is incredible. The only thing I don't like is as mentioned in other reviews. It brings alot of attention seeking, pretend DJ's into the game by adding an easy to use tool. Nothing will ever replace the turntable but all and all, it's a good product! I bought a pair and can't be more satisfied with the flexibility it gives me as a mobile DJ!

Be a real DJ? get real.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: The same why people talked about the first digital keyboardis the same ype of hater talking about this turntable. Yes the price is high but this is the first of it's kind soon a better and cheaper model will come out. Ifyou are a real DJ you can adapt to the differences. NO itis not going to feel like 1200s but if you can only find one copy of you limited edition 12" and your friend owns it this is a good way to expand you music library. BUT it is a good product and you can not deny it's importance. ps REAL DJs got skillz on not only 1200s but other turntables too. BUT a turntablist is a different story.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Hey People...This is a Pro CD player and yes it does come with a Pro Price tag ! It would have to be by far the best PRO CD player on the market, as far as it's ability to mimick the sound of vinyl. However the wheels of steel are still where the talent lies and not with digital loops, pre programed cue points and digital effects. Be a real DJ.
