"does not work as advertised" on by mjlawrence13

Pros: - Does boost signal in limited circumstances
    - Simple set-up
    - Easy instructions

Cons: - Increased bars do not translate to improved signal.
    - Regularly switched to "red light" mode
    - Could hear others clearly, but my voice was apparently garbled

Summary: I purchased this item after hearing about its older sibling, the YX510. I live in a ground-floor city apartment that is set about 3 feet below the street level. I have windows, and I set this item up next to my window where I get at least 1-2 bars.

After plugging everything in and setting the signal antenna on my coffee table, I noticed that I went from zero reception inside to 3-5 bars. But as soon as I moved more than 2 feet from the boost antenna, I lost all of that reception. Also, the LED would switch from green to red whenever I tried to reposition the boost antenna.

Still, I could get signal. Encouraged, I started testing it. I could call my land line phone without too much trouble. But when I called friends and family on the phone, I noticed poor reception and they complained that I was almost unintelligible on their end.

I have no idea if the YX500/510 models will help me - they seem to also have a lot of complicated restrictions. I returned my model to RadioShack (and had an awful experience w/ RadioShack's online return policy, but that is besides the point). The point is, The YX300 may simply be too underpowered to fix my situation. Maybe when I get some cash, I'll try Wi-Ex's other products. Sorry - and I had high hopes.

    "Completely useless!!!" on by jen956

    Pros: Don't see any

Cons: High price, really poor customer service

Summary: Bought this after I saw the cnet editors review. Customer service claims that it will work if you have at least 1 bar. It didn't even work when I occasionally had 2 bars. I left numerous messages for customer service with no call back. I tried this out in both of my houses (40 miles apart) & it didn't work in either location

"zBoost YX300 Cell Signal Booster" on by biggestgreg

Pros: Easy to set up and really works!

Cons: You have to keep the antenna a minimum distance of 6 feet from the base or it doesn't work (but the red light comes on to tell you so).

Summary: The YX300 works great for my desk area in my house since my one window is over 6 feet away from my workspace. It consistently increases my skimpy coverage area of 1-2 bars up to 5 full bars! I use a Blackberry Curve and this works great for it. It does the same for my Verizon Wireless Air Card!

I've used it at hotels when I travel and it works great in bad coverage areas there as well.

The only reason I didn't give it a 10 is because you really have to be sitting near the antenna for it to work well.

"Works as advertised" on by jlerma1

Pros: It works for my office space!

Cons: A 6 ft range is a bit short.

Summary: I just got the new iPhone 3G and as expected I got no service from AT&T. After researching the extenders, I figured that this device was the best option for me in my apartment.

The only trick to setting this thing up was that I have afound that I needed to have line of sight from the antenna to the zboost. After 15 minutes of playing with the position of the antenna, I ended up getting between 4-5 bar on the phone. The strange thing is that I get no noticeable change on my verizon Q. Even though I normally get stellar service with Verizon.

I am quite happy with this device indeed and have not lost any calls. The only drawback is that the device does not go beyond 6 feet. If I move the phone from one side of my desk to the other, then I lose a bar or two. But that's OK, I am normally at my desk anyway. Regardless, this product does work as advertised and I would recommend it if you live and work in a small space like me.

"Need excellent strength to start" on by dispatcher307

    Pros: Nice if it worked

    Cons: Didn't work for me

Summary: I read up on this before I bought it to make sure it would work. I was told with 1-2 bars I could get it to work. I have put the unit in several spots where I have 1-2 bars of service with my cell phone and it didn't work. I called the company and they finally decided "it probably won't work for you."
