"does not work as advertised"
Pros: - Does boost signal in limited circumstances
- Simple set-up
- Easy instructionsCons: - Increased bars do not translate to improved signal.
Summary: I purchased this item after hearing about its older sibling, the YX510. I live in a ground-floor city apartment that is set about 3 feet below the street level. I have windows, and I set this item up next to my window where I get at least 1-2 bars.
- Regularly switched to "red light" mode
- Could hear others clearly, but my voice was apparently garbled
After plugging everything in and setting the signal antenna on my coffee table, I noticed that I went from zero reception inside to 3-5 bars. But as soon as I moved more than 2 feet from the boost antenna, I lost all of that reception. Also, the LED would switch from green to red whenever I tried to reposition the boost antenna.
Still, I could get signal. Encouraged, I started testing it. I could call my land line phone without too much trouble. But when I called friends and family on the phone, I noticed poor reception and they complained that I was almost unintelligible on their end.
I have no idea if the YX500/510 models will help me - they seem to also have a lot of complicated restrictions. I returned my model to RadioShack (and had an awful experience w/ RadioShack's online return policy, but that is besides the point). The point is, The YX300 may simply be too underpowered to fix my situation. Maybe when I get some cash, I'll try Wi-Ex's other products. Sorry - and I had high hopes.
