    "Nice alternative to flip phones."

by titanthunder on December 4, 2006

Pros: Size, qwerty keypad, picture quality, screen clarity.

Cons: Keypad lock, camera button quirkiness, mediocre sound quality on calls.

Summary: Contract was about to run out with Verizon and after several weeks of study and research, we decided to go with the LG enV. We purchased two of these phones, one for me and one for the wife. Neither of us really care for flip phones, mainly because they are a pain in the a$$ to use. So, that was a huge factor in our decision. The enV is a nice phone, and isn't as bulky in person as it might seem, as seen thru pictures on the web. The camera takes excellent pictures for a cell phone, and makes sending or writing text messages a breeze, with the user friendly Qwerty keypad. Screen clarity is very good and connecting to the web for downloading or surfing on the web with the phone is not only simple, but is relatively speedy as well. My one problem with the phone besides the quirky keypad lock, is the call quality. This phone sounds no worse or better than my previous phone and that has been a disappointment to this point. The main menu screen is user friendly and also easy to use especially if you have big hands or are an inpatient person. Setting up e-mail (Outlook) is very difficult because Verizon has yet to include the setup for this phone with the software that you must download to your computer. Luckily, we have some time to test drive it before we decide to keep it for good and I will update if our decision to take it or leave it changes. Overall, the phone is pretty nice especially if you like to write e-mails, text messages, or listen to music. However...be ready for some buginess and quirkiness with this phone because it is not perfect.

I'm sad to say that we returned our VX9900's today for a couple of other phones. While we liked the concept of the phone, it has many weaknesses that made its value not worth its pricetag in our eyes. Not only could we not get our e-mail thru Outlook or Comcast to work with the phone, the phone has one glaring weakness... You can not lock the phone on the outside! You can numerically lock it from the inside, once you flip it open, but you can not lock it or unlock it when it's closed. The keypad lock is different. It will lock when set-up, but will deactivate when the phone is flipped open, even the smallest bit. When I used this phone with my leather pouch, the phone would flip open ever so slightly. If I hit the key pad just right... it would engage the phone or even speed dial someone leaving the phone "hanging." The folks at my local Verizon were scratching there heads and had no answers. They did say that this is a great point to bring up with there corporate office. The only holster that you can safely and use worry free with this phone, is the plastic one (Fugly) in the Verizon store that does NOT cover up the numerical keypad at all. I loved the concept and quality of the phone, but having my phone possibly call someone w/o my knowledge or consent, was the final straw.
Best of luck to everyone who has this phone. I loved the qwerty keypad and the camera took some awesome photos for a phone.

This phone is excellent for us teens who love to text, talk, and IM this phone is not for buisness poeple no offense and this phone should not be compared to the side kick beacause each phone is differnet in their own way and the env is for sumone who really just wants the basics and if the want sumthin small and simple. The side kick is for sumone who wants the total package and more so really these two phones are based on what you really want . This phone i think is more for the younger age group who love to socialize 24/7 like i do. Also get a text package plz do because this phone will run ur bill up if u dont if u text alot. I love the features im am so far pleased with the enV. The battery life is amazing i went on a one day trip to Atlanta which is a 3 hrs 30 min drive with my parents and the whole day i only lost half of the battery after texting the majority of the trip and 2 phones calls. I haven't used the music feature yet so i can not say anything about that. I camera is awsome the pictures come out so clear its scary. It takes great picutres but i wouldnt make this your primary camera, beacuse it does kill the battery if you always use it but what camera one phone doesnt wear the battery down. This phone is made to take picuters but still get a digtal camera and dont wear out the poor phone. The phone's reactions to the camera is average, its acceptable but in the next modle it could be a little faster. I didnt like how on the front screen when u take pictures u dont get the full clarity of the picutre as u do when u take the picture one the main screen, but it's still usefull when you are doing a self portrait or you and your friends are just goofing around with the camera. I love the cell phone reception on the trip to Atlanta form the time i left my house i never did lose service on the network at a time i did lose all my bars are whatever they are now but i was still in the service area and in a few seconds i did get one and so far i havent gotten a dropped call and i live almost out of the city limits where i am located. The phone reception is good even with the speaker phone. I love the dual stereo speakers they are made for sound and i was surprised that they are also used for ur speaker phone so the sound quality is awsome. I also love that when i have a text message i just flip the phone open and it is automatically switched to speaker phone so the conversation can keep going as i text. The instant messaging is ok but it can be better the phone has a almost bad response to IM when ure also texting. I was IMing and texting at the same time and the phone couldnt keep up at one time it shutdown on mebut powered back up and an then i would sumtimes get a blue screen with the phones real name the VX990 and it would just stay there so i would hafta take the battery out and then put it back in. Odnt get me wrong its good at texting and Iming but dont do them at the same time almost. It can do them at the same time but eventualy it would bug up.And also i dont like its so response to the IM program when you are trying to close out of it. Now i dont have 2 stay on the computer to IM and also its more PRIVACY for us teens. I lovethe keyguard i just found out why its there cuz when i put it in my pocket the buttons do get pressed and when i take it out my pocket i wonder why #9785 is on the screen so the keygaurd is annoying but useful. I also like the stand alone mode when in school it takes it off the wireless network so that i dont have 2 turn if off or put it on silent. I wish they would makes fashion assceories so that i can customize my phone. I havent tried the bluetooth yet. I was surprised when the pone has a feature were it can actally say ur text messages out loud. Well dats all i gotta say

I am happy with my 3 year old LG VX-4400 flip phone but it is getting old. The entire purpose for my consideration of the enV was to access my personal email since it is filtered at work or while on the road. If it cannot perform that function it is definitely not worth the $49 above what my plan allows plus an extra $20/month!
