"Good Phone Shackled By Overpriced Verizon E-mail and Text Services"

by sketchnet on December 5, 2006

    Pros: Great Keyboard, High-Quality Display

Cons: Overpriced E-mail and Text Services, Limited Software Options, Bulky

Summary: I purchased the LG enV the first week it came out. The keyboard is the largest and easiest to use out of any smart phone that I have seen. Unfortunately, Verizon charges way too much for its text, IM and e-mail services.

Every feature on this phone is designed to suck money from your wallet.

If you use all of the features of the phone, it will easily add $50 a month in extra charges to your phone bill. For example, click the orange e-mail button on the keyboard and you are asked to download an application that costs $20 per month.

Also, every IM message you send or receive counts as a text message. The text messaging will add $10-20 a month to your phone bill.

This is a nice phone but the draconian pricing and limited software options make it a dud. Luckily for me, I was able to return the phone within the trial period.
    Updated
Today Verizon announced unlimited text messaging which addresses some of my complaints about cost of service. That being said, $20/month on top of VCast for e-mail is still too pricey for me. This is a big step in the right direction though.

The 9900 is NOT classified as a smartphone.

I wanted this phone until I saw Verizons prices. Cingular and Verizon really rob you when it comes to their data features. Thats why I stick with the Tmobile sidekick. It may not be as fancy as the Env but at least they dont GOUGE you!

My sidekick gives me 1000 day time minutes, and unlimited nights and weekends for 44.99 and the data feature is 20 dollars extra but its unlimited. Unlimited text messaging, web browsing, and IMing. Tmobile has their flaws but as far as plans theyre by far THEEE BEST!

I just got the enV phone, and I need to know... before I use the FREE month`s trial of Vcast... will I see any charges turn up on my bill for any or all of the Vcast capabilities? Afraid to use it till I find out!!!

compared to my cingular, this isn't to bad. cingular charges alot, and runs me twice as much as my bill each month. I have a motorola razor with cingular. To get 3000 texts a month and 400 minutes, nights and weekends free, no free mobile to mobile, it costs 79 dollars. I am a big texter with my friend and go over my 3000 alot.. In the past two days, I have had to add $25 to my phone, each day, because I run out of money.. This is because, cingular charges .15 cents per text, trust me, it runs out fast. So.. each month so far (have had it since nov. or dec.) I pay between $129- 154 dollars.. for 400 minutes and 3,500 texs. 500 texts cost 75 dollars after it runs out, and 3,000 is the highest you can go. If going on the net, it cost me soo much.. easily 8 dollars for 2 minutes on the internet, if downloaded a game or ringtone, payed for it, plus 5-10 dollars to cingular depending on how big it was.

    So...

compare that to the lg env, where I will be getting 450 minutes, extended warranty, unlimited IN messaging, 5,000 texts and v cast v pack for 76.98.

I'm not complaining about the money, just pointing out... there are other company's that charge much much more for their services... if you don't want to pay it, then find something else that fits you like I did.

On the off chance that your review is an honest one and not one from a jealous competitor. I would recommend that you check out the v cast pricing from Verizon for an extra twenty bcuks or so each month there is more than enough air time to make anyone happy.

You are missing the point of this forum. You should review the PHONE, not the service from Verizon. I understand right now they are exclusive, but that won't always be the case, and you've impacted the overall score for this phone with your complaints about Verizon that have nothing to do with LG or the enV.

uh i thought this was a review of the LG enV not Verizons service. all phone companys are ripoffs and that would be a nice foot note but dont give it a bad score because the service wasnt up to par.
