"blackberry? voyager? iphone? venus? glyde? why i'm so glad i went with the enV(2)" on by calculust

Pros: great size/weight, QWERTY keyboard, reception, sturdy, multimedia capabilities, battery life, pic/video capacity

Cons: vibration could stand to be a little stronger

Summary: like a few of the reviews on here, my two year contract was up, so it was time for me to choose a new phone (and possibly a new service).

iPhone- friends who have it complained the battery life is terrible, and more importantly, AT&T is a terrible network. sometimes i travel all over the place, and the last thing i need is loss of service. so i was definitely going to stay with verizon. that said...

blackberry- i can't understand the "QWERTY" keyboard on the pearl 8130 to save my life. it's awkward and the trackball is very limited because it only moves up and down. also, the user interface leaves a lot to be desired. for a messaging phone, it's not especially easy to use.

voyager- it's terribly bulky, and the touchscreen isn't accurate. that's a very big deal considering the touchscreen is supposed to be the phone's selling point.

venus- has a touchscreen that seems to be used only as a gimick. should have just made it a slider without a touchscreen, because it's basically useless. and the lack of QWERTY keyboard made this no better than a razr (with worse reception).

glyde- pretty cool look, not unlike a streamlined voyager. however, the buttons on the touchscreen are even less responsive than voyager, and the slideout QWERTY keyboard doesn't have numbers. the worst is that it takes about three keystrokes to the touchscreen (when the touchscreen responds) before you can even dial a phone number. very frustrating phone, but it sure is pretty.

enV(2)- it looked a little thick to me until i realized everything it does. the reviews were glowing, and it worked well and felt good at the verizon store. no touchscreen turned out to be a huge advantage. i've pretty much concluded that unless the touchscreen has apple's technology, it's kind of ineffective. yahoo and other email services are available, so that was a winning feature for me. as time goes on (and it's been about four days), i keep finding more reasons to love this phone. i've charged the battery only once in the past four days, and at that, it had only lost two bars, and believe me when i say i use my phone quite a bit. i'll assume it actually lasts much longer. both screens have great resolution. the speakers have an alarmingly clear sound, no matter how loud i turn up the volume, and the volume goes pretty high). 2mp camera, where have you been all my life? pics are sharp. video records for up to an hour. most importantly, aside from how easy it is to send/receive email on this phone, the reception is fantastic. i am floored by the call quality of this phone.

i put a lot of thought into which phone i should purchase because my phone is my lifeline. i absolutely made the best choice.

I HAVE, IN FACT, TRIED EACH OF THESE PHONES WITH MY OWN TWO HANDS. TO BE SURE, IPHONE'S BATTERY LIFE IS STILL ITS WEAKNESS; VOYAGER IS A BRICK COMPARED TO THE ENV2--AND NO, ITS TOUCHSCREEN PALES IN COMPARISON TO IPHONE; GLYDE IS STILL A TRICKY PHONE AROUND THE EDGES; BLACKBERRY PEARL'S SURE-TYPE KEYBOARD REMAINS CLUMSY AT BEST; AND VENUS IS STILL A GIMMICK OF A PHONE.

I'VE SINCE TRIED LG DARE, AND FOUND THAT THE LANDSCAPE KEYBOARD IS WAY TOO SENSITIVE.

I NEEDED A TEXTING PHONE; I FOUND A GREAT ONE IN ENV2. STILL LOVE IT.

I absolutely love my env 2. It's small and lightweight enough to fit in my pocket but yet the keys are large enough to make texting a breeze. I also take a lot of pictures and email them to family. While the pictures might not be the absolute best they are sufficient for emailing and the family loves getting spur of the moment pics by email or picture message. I haven't found anything that I don't like about this phone and I have had mine for quite a while.

i have the env2, and i like it a lot!!!! the exterior is useless in some ways though but nothing is perfect, and to Mandre24 i know you are just sharing your opinion but what if she did try all these phones?? you cant get so mad just because she shared what she thinks of phones. its a phone!! there a lot more important things in life

while you're entitled do your opinion i disagree with your review. Im not sure how the enV holds with the other LG phones, but from my experience LG makes some of the worst phones. Sure they make look great and function great but ive always had hardware break on the LG (ive owned the chocolate and the dare). I currently have an iphone and a blackberry 8900 (owned a bold and an 8330 before this). my bestfriend has the enV and i can tell you right now for messaging, the blackberry destroys the enV. It seems very stupid to me that you commented on the blackberry trackball only moving up and down, because it doesnt. and i have no idea why you compared the enV to the pearl. i dont know what prices are like for you guys, but on my carrier you can get an enV for $40 and a blackberry 8330 for $50, so not a big price difference. The pearl is horrible for texting, but it isnt a real QWERTY phone. when you compare the enV to the curve its no match. I would say even iphone is faster, and solid OS

Don't mind those posts that are "laughing out loud" over your review. I, too, was looking into a new phone w/ Verizon since my upgrade was due. I researched many, many phones from Verizon and the ev2 was definitely my pick. I use texting as a primary means of communication and a full QWERTY keyboard was a must that included keys i can actually work with. BB Storm, Glyde, Voyager were too bulky for my tastes so in summary, your post as well as other reviews on other sites helped me come to my decision to purchase the ev2. BTW, as for those with "carrier" whining issues, I must say Verizon does have the best coverage considering the close proximity of my home to a an agency that loves to scramble signals...Verizon is the only one who can pull through.

ok i have a glyde, i got it b/c i was pretty set on the "cool" of having a touch screen. I know some about other touch screen phones and i've concluded that Apple's is hands down the best. My friend has the Voyager, and i've used it a few times and its outstanding. I like it much more than my glyde. Its not much bigger, he has TV on it, the quality is unreal for a phone, the touch screen works better than the glyde's, which can be a real pain in the neck. However, the glyde is a lot cheaper, and if you fiddle w/ the settings its ok. In the glyde's defense, it looks cooler than the voyager and env2, which i'm thinking of getting my mom for a few reasons. 1. she's sorta stone-age when it comes to technology i think use of touch screen would overwhelm her/ frustrate her. 2. It has a "traditional" phone layout on the front, with the 1-9 in a rectangle, which she can use for speed dial. 3. The keys are bigger than on most phones, and she can see then better w/o her glasses. Thats my 2 cents

why does the black env2 have a higher rating than the marroon one? what's the difference besides the color?

  • reply on October 15, 2008 by kk9fan73

The enV2 is smaller and more compact that the Voyager. I have used both and not just played with them at the store. You can even compare the size of them for yourself.
(enV2) 4.0H x 2.13W x 0.65D (Voyager) 4.64H x 2.12W x 0.71D Not a huge difference but looks to me that the Voyager is bigger. But to each his/her own everyone is entitled to their opinion.

Also, the Voyager is almost JUST as bulky as the EnV2, so good job being hypocritical. Not to mention, the EnV2's exterior screen is so useless. Too small to do anything. **spelling mistake in my reply below this- "I haven't had a problem with it in the month i have had it."

  • reply on October 10, 2008 by Mandre24

I'm literally laughing out loud. I can't stand the fact that you a judging phones without ever using them. For start offs, the Voyager's touch screen is amazing. I haven't had a problem with it in to month i've had it. If you were finding troubles with it, you must not have used the touch calibration to signify your specific touch patterns to the phone. All of the other negative comments you have said about the other phones i cannot agree or disagree because i haven't used them. Maybe you should learn to try out phones yourself instead of listening to the minorities. Also, the Voyager may be bulky to you, but i personally love the feel and size of the voyager, it fits well in my hands, which is comforting. Im sorry if i may sound rude, but people please don't listen to this review, it's all coming from a person who rates phones based on hype, or gossip. Calculust, you need to get your facts straight.

I, like you and so many others are at the 2yr "upgrade" land of possibilities. I knew I'd stay with verizon, so the carrier isn't the issue. I was really excited at the idea of getting a new phone seeing what all is out there. However, after reading review upon review, going through scads of "phone finder" services to find the "right phone" for me, and considering all the pros and cons my different choices....I was left overwhelmed and confused. For cryin' out loud; it shouldn't be as complicated, yet I'd really regret making the wrong choice. So....I ended up narrowing down my choices to the phones you were deciding between. I think after reading your review, I've finally made my decision. I'm off to get the enV2. Really....and I know I took too many words to say it, but...THANKS!! Your review really helped me make my final decision. Maybe I'll come back in a few weeks to let ya'll know how it worked out.

Personally, I live in rural Michigan, my cousin has an enV(2)and I have an iPhone. As a family we travel all over the country to camp, and i consistently have less bars than her, however i have better quality of voice communications, and more data coverage that is surprisingly faster (ATT's edge network should be slower than her EVDO rev. A). Just commenting to say you shouldn't comment on a networks quality without the facts, besides ATT covers a few million more people than Verizon.

I went with enV2 because the customer service person at Verizon showed me how small a few buttons around the edge of Glyde's touchscreen really are

I think if someone's hung up on the cool factor of the touchscreen, they will go with Glyde, but it's just not as responsive or easy to use as it should be

enV2 all the way
