"Missed key details on every single function"

by pkteison on November 10, 2008

    Pros: Beautiful display

Cons: The major functions that this device tries to do, it fails in some critically important way. It seems so close to being a fantastic phone, but the execution is critically flawed.

Summary: Phone is critically flawed: It only rings about half the time, even with full battery and signal bars. There is no audible or vibrating indication of a missed call, so you have to take it out and check it every few hours to be sure you aren't neglecting your friends. This from a phone that is supposed to be all about being social?

Messaging drops characters if you type fast, EVERY single message I write loses characters, so I can't type a message without reviewing the whole thing before I hit send.

Web browser doesn't display some photos right and can't scroll right if stuff is off the screen - facebook photo album, flickr, and picasaweb all don't work. They work ok in Opera Mini, if you can get it installed - the phone randomly reboots when trying to install Opera Mini, keep trying eventually it will work took me a dozen reboots, but you can't install signed apps so you can't do things like give the browser permission to save files to the filesystem.

In short, it does a poor job at the things it is supposed to do. It comes so close, and falls just enough short that it ruins the experience.

All my features work fine here in Houston TX. It rings the normal amount of time, and all the data options are enabled. It seems to keep up with my typing. I'm no 12 year old text champ but I can keep up with the Jones' I imagine if you are going too fast you could outrun the interface but that doesn't sound like a phone problem. Just slow down a WPM or two.
The browser is what it is for a non PDA/smartphone.

I had similar problems with receiving calls. It only rings half the time, even with full bars. It appears to be from data services being turned on. And turning it on and off manually is NOT an acceptable solution. Perhaps a firmware update will fix this problem some day.

sorry- just realized you had trouble installing opera mini- the signed download issue is a problem but again, firmware updates should help. I upgraded from a samsung A900 (oh where have all the magnesium cased phones gone?) and after two software updates for it, it began working flawlessly.

Sprint will let you return it, no questions, if you can't stand the trouble though-

I had some trouble with receiving calls the first couple of days... upon further inspection, I realized data services came on intermittently. Obviously, turning off data services cured it instantly, but then they had to be re-enabled for internet use and subsequently turned off again afterward.

I assume the intermittent data issue will be resolved in a firmware update, but it is *very* annoying. Regarding browser difficulty, have you tried opera mini? Any service carrier browser short of a smart phone browser such as safari or b-berry will be pretty limited. I find opera mini works pretty well for my purposes.

However, I enjoy the phone and really like the corporate webmail feature and imap email access to my personal email-

i have to agree/disagree on some of the things you have said. first of all, the calling WORKS flawlessly. Did you get your phone numbers switched at the sprint store by the reps? theres your problem if you did. you must set the individual contact number ringtones/vibrate, otherwise they will do nothing. what you said happened to you, happened to me, but then i found out why and fixed it in an instance.

messaging- ok, it may drop characters when you type extremely fast, just type a teeney bit slower. i can still type fast without dropping chars. this shouldnt be a problem, unless your entering a "fastest texter" contest.

web- this phone isnt a smartphone, dont expect it to have a webbrowser like one.

this phone has really good battery life too. after a whole day of texting and various calls, it may only go from 3 bars to 2 bars of battery. i usually only charge it once every 3 days. this phone DOES do everything its supposed to do,given its still not a smartphone.great for texters
