Pros Bright, colorful display; camera and spotlight; MP3 player; rugged phone with comfortable feel; accessories (belt clip, micro SD card, SD adapter, charger) included; bluetooth
Cons Motorola's navigation
Summary I looked at a variety of phones and carriers before I purchased the i580. I was looking for a phone that was rugged, but also had some useful features like a camera and an MP3 player. Although I've only had it a few days I am very pleased with my choice.
Most poeple seem to want the smaller, more compact phones. I like the fact that this phone has some "meat" to it. The rubber texture makes it feel like a quality phone, and you don't have to worry about tons of smudges and fingerprints. If you like smaller phones then this phone will seem large to you. But in reality it's not much larger than a lot of the phones that I looked at.
One of the things that I really liked about this phone is that it came with a belt clip, micro-SD card, and a card adapter. When I looked at phones through other carriers these items tended to be "extra".
I gave this phone a "9" because it needs some improvement with it's menus. It also lacks a calculator and external controls for the MP3 player. Otherwise it would be a 10 for me!
Pros Large colorful screen, great battery life, very durable, MP3 functions
Cons none found yet
Summary I believe this phone is much better then any other nextel phone there is, I've had about every phone other then a i710, this phone is much better then the i870, much better battery life and much better durability...I've had this phone since the day it was released, and i have no complaints against the i580...Great Job NEXTEL
Pros feels great in your hand-rubber-can drop it and not worry
Cons small external screen
Summary I really like this phone ,I have had the 870-930-560-and this phone is so far the best phone I have seen from Nextel
Pros Rugges, Water Reistant, Great Features, Works As Advertised
Cons Would like to see customization software (add wallpaper, ringtones, etc.) included.
Summary I've been a Nextel customer for 7 years (i1000, i550plus, i700plus, i60, i90c, i730) and this is the best phone from them yet. I was thinking of switching to an i355 for connectivity & durability issues; but my Nextel Rep. talked me into giving the i580 a chance, speaking very highly of it and offering to trade it for an i355 if I didn't like it. Well, I've had NO connection issues (...I seem to get a good signal no matter where I am), the sound is both loud & crystal clear, and this is one truly rugged phone. The addition of a camera, which I originally viewed as a gimmick, turned out to be a real plus when I found I needed to document something and didn't have any other camera available. The microSD memory card allows a wide variety of possibilities in addition to phone options - I've also used it as a "flash drive" to transfer files between computers. I am VERY happy with the i580 and have no intentions on trading it in. Thanks, Nextel!
Pros Sturdy design, Camera, Bluetooth, Lightweight ...
Cons LARGE, Hard to navigate menu, No Calculator ?!, missing basic features
Summary I got this phone (9-23-06) to replace my i90c. I chose the i580 over the i870, because I didn't like the push button flip activation of the 870. This phone has all the features I was looking for (camera, assignable ringtones, picture caller ID, large color display, front speaker...), except for size. After using my i90 for so long, this is like going from a Yugo to a fully loaded 4X4 Dodge Ram.
As mentioned in the Pros section, this phone appears to be built to take a beating. This also causes the phone to be larger than I'd like (Good with the Bad). The menu navigation is confusing. The manual has most of the information, but why not list everything in the manual instead of putting other features only on the enclosed CD? I'm still trying to decide which Bluetooth headset I'll purchase. The manual suggests the H700.
No Calculator? Gee that should be a basic feature (it was on the i90), huh? Also no tip estimator. I've noticed that the date is missing on the recent calls list. My i90 listed both the date and time the call was received. I'm not a heavy user and found that I've only had to charge the battery about every third day (be sure to have a car charger). This phone is also very light for it's size and rugged exterior. As Cnet stated, with it's rubber exterior, it will not just slip into a pocket. I have a leather/elastic belt case, which takes two hands to get the phone out of.
I would rate this phone a 7.8 for my needs.
Overall, this is a very good phone. If you work out in the elements and want/need a full featured phone that can take the abuse, THIS IS THE PHONE FOR YOU. I'm pleased with my purchase, but just discovered that Motorola is coming out with the i880 (11/06). Same features (+) as i870 & i850 but much slimmer than the 870, which is what I was really looking for. : )
