"The worst cell phone in years - buyer beware"

by gcmci on July 19, 2005

    Pros: beautiful, thin, cool

Cons: too fragile; no insurance from Cingular, Moto's warranty is a joke

Summary: I bought two Razors - less than a week later, one got wet. This voided the warranty, and no one would fix it. Motorola repairman admitted that many of the razors turned in for repair were not covered under warranty, and that the cheapest repair was over $200! He also said that the aluminum skin made it much more fragile and less weather proof than the 551, which is essentially the same phone in a more typical moto chassis. Cingular does not offer insurance for the Razor, so, basically, I had a 2 year contract and a phone that no one would fix. The only solution that they could offer was for to buy a new phone at list price ($400 for a new V3). What did I do? I paid the $150 penalty for early contract termination, and went back to T-Mobile!

Yes, it's lame that I got it wet - but I have been using cool cell phones for 20 years - from Blackberrys to Nokia 9000s - none have been as rediculously fragile. In the life of a cell phone, it gets some rough treatment. Who needs one that you might void the warranty if you forget that you stuck it in you pocket when you sit down?

You said you've been using cell phones for 20 years and that is obviously a lie. Cell phones did not exist 20 years ago so I'm not inclined to buy into anything you wrote in your review of this phone and neither should anyone else! It seems to me EVERYTHING you wrote in your review is an extreme exaggeration. 20 years ago it was 1987, the year the CD came out so how is it again that you've been using cell phones for 20 years?

I am sorry, but I just can't stop laughing at this review. I just can't believe that anyone thinks a phone is water proof. And then we have someone that can't come close to spelling giving his reply. I tend to be very careful with all my electronics and all I can say is this phone rocks. Just don't drop it in water. LOL

I agree. My last phone barely had a scratch on it. Looked brand new even after 3 years. Then I bought the RAZR because it was pink and it was cute. I had it a whole of three months and it's ruined. It never really worked right from the start. I had it replaced and it stopped working again. After the third time we went on vacation and it was very muggy and humid. The phone was in my purse the entire time I was on vacation and I only used it twice in the two weeks we were gone. Then when I got home I pulled it out of my purse and it wasn't working again. Only this time the dot was red not white and of course they won't cover it. I never dropped it in water, and it still got wet because of the humidity. If you are thinking of purchasing this phone.... don't. I think the maker of the phone should do the right thing and do a massive recall on these pieces of junk and replace them with ones that work. I will never ever buy from Motorola again!!! And, will tell everyone I meet about my awful experience.

You're kidding, right? You are saying the phone sucks becuase you dropped the phone in water? What a great review. Drop your nokia in water and see what happens, how can you even review the phone if you have not used it? That is like me buying a cake, dropping it, and then saying it sucks. How is this the "worst cell phone in years?" YOU HAVEN'T EVEN USED IT! Please write a serious review, it is not the phones fault you were careless enough to drop the phone in water.

a razr for 400? you must be buying from some black market dealers...

nowadays you can get a free razr many ways, either have a friend make a legit site selling a razr for free, and show that to bestbuy (here anyway they're acknowledging any deal that's cheaper than theirs like wal-mart)
or just show them a site that gives the razr away for 60-99 dollars (many trust me), and voila! no need for spending 400 dollars. that would actually be cheaper than paying that 150 early termination LOL so you waisted money either way... but not everyone knows this info like i'm blessed with...

i dunno how most of you are soooo heavy handed and rough with electronics.. or maybe i just know how to take care of them. i've had mine for 2 months and never had a single problem.

also for insurance, i'd go with a 3rd party insurance company (google it) so i could get water damage coverage.

Person gave review after they dropped the phone in water. Can you tell me how that makes sense?

I heard that people can get insurance protection on your cell phone through National Cellular Owners Association. Website - http://www.joinncoa.net/
I don't know if they're any good or not, but worth a shot to look into.

Although the motorola razor itself is unique, rememebr that a phoen is onyl as good as it's service. having said that, Cingular has the market on V3, so I'll let you do the math there.

Beyond that I've had 3 Vs'w now and thes have been the down points to the cell phone.

1)It's VERY fragile, and its keyboard cannot handle the wear and tear of even normal everyday texting.

2)The casing that covers the battery is 2 parts connected by nothing more than double sided sticky tape which wears out if you open the panel more than 5 times.

3)The rubber gromits that keep the phone from rubbing on itself when it closes fall out.

4)THe phone offers great texting and media capabilites than few to none ot the other cell phones, or carriers cover, so you cant even use them.

5)Whjen using bluetooth, the phone constantly loses connection. I have tried all brands or wireless headsets, includin Motorola's own bluetooth wireless, nonw of which work very well at all.

    6) USB does not always work and or allow you to download anything to the phone.

7)Did I mention it is very fragile? Even the outer lens cover does not stay flush with the cell phone (Which can cause leakage into the cell itself)

8)Picture mode is not clear in its usage and does nt always allow you to send pictures that you take.

***ON a good note, fortunately Cingular has traded my phone out each time I had a problem wit hthe cell. From the keys stiking to the screen going blank over and over again for noe reason at all, to the parts well, falling apart.

All I can say is unless you are someone eho tekes REALLY good care of your cell and babies it, then this phone is NOT for you.
