"Nice phone, but will never be great until it is on the Sprint network!"
2.5 starson by cornerofnonwherePros: Motorola phone, new CDMA RAZR.
Cons: On Verizon's network.
Summary: There is a lot of talk on here on the A900 and RAZR. I just want to add my own input here. The only RAZR that is on the level of the A900 is with Verizon. Verizon limits everything you can download and use on your phone. You have to download BREW programs from (ONLY)Verizon for use on your Verizon phone. You can not download a BREW program from anywhere else! You also can not use JAVA! So all of the programs made by companies from all over the world are useless to you are your Verizon phone. And since Verizon holds all of the cards, they can also limit what sites you may goto. Ask any Verizon customer that uses the web and let them tell you the their annoying stories.
Also, Verizon does not allow you to take your MP3's & photos and use them on your phone. No! ONLY VERIZON CONTENT!
Sprint on the other hand lets you use any of your custom ring tones, video ring tones, streaming video, wallpapers on your Sprint phone. Sprint does not limit what sites you can access. Sprint lets you use ANY Java programs on your phone. Sprint has the peace of mind to know that their customers are not little children and lets them have their privacy.
Verizon's VCast is really limited. Very few things can be customized and added. Sprint lets you choose from, and customize your content. Verizon has some pretty pricey plans. Sprint has Free Incoming and the Fair & Flexible America plans. Free PCS-to-PCS & PCS-to-Nextel calling. On top of roaming on the entire Verizon Wireless, ALLTEL, and Many other networks for free. Nights starting at 7:00PM and 6:00PM! Sprint has way more plan features then any other carrier.
So this whole fight between the A900 and RAZR is so pointless. Both phones are great, but the networks are completely different. And when you look at the facts, Sprint has the better offer. So I choose my A900 because it is with Sprint. If Sprint had the RAZR, then I would have chosen that instead. But Sprint has the better offering, so I stay with them no matter what phones come out.Updated
I posted this review because I have used both Verizon Wireless and now Sprint. I currently own the Samsung A900 and have a friend of a friend that owns the RAZR. His phone still has the same old basic Verizon GUI, basic MSN mobile home page, and lack of BREW content.
So I wanted to let others know this before they make a choice to buy the Verizon RAZR.
1:Is it not true if the RAZR was on Sprint's network it would have Sprint's Vision home page, not just MSN mobile?
2:Is it not true the RAZR would have full access to Java applications, not just be forced to buy a carriers BREW content?
3:Is it not true that Sprint gives full access to all web sites, not just the ones it wants you to see?
4:Is it not true Verizon charges $44.99 a month for PDA access, while Sprint's is only $10 and $15?
5:Is it not true that the Treo 700 will need the $44.99 a month plan, while Sprint's PDA EV-DO access is only $15?
6:Is it not true Verizon's insurance protection plan only covers phones purchased from Verizon, while Sprint's covers any phone new or uses?
7:Is it not true that Verizon's VCast as much less content then Sprint's Power Visions TV, Radio, Satellite radio, MP3 download, ect?
People need to know both sides and I am just sick of people coming into the A900 forums posted garbage just because they use the Verizon RAZR.
Say what you want, but Sprint offers more then Verizon does. You can claim al day that Verizon has better voice coverage, but you can't compare Sprint's and Verizon's data packages.Updated
I tried replying to your question but it won't go through. So here is what I was trying to say.
But if you go from let's say a Treo 650 to the Treo 700, you will most likely have to upgrade to the $15 Unlimited EV-DO Power Visions access. Because the Treo 650 uses Sprint's 1X network while the 700 would be using the EV-DO. Just keep in mind if you go from an EV-DO coverage area to a 1X area, your Power Visions will still work but just at a slower speed. I was averaging between 90kbs to 100kbs with my 1X phones. Now I average around 1mbs with my A900.
someone posted an article on Sprintuers.com I think, or maybe Sprintpcsinfo.com that said Sprint's data speeds are faster because they use the 1900mhz band and they need more towers to cover an area. So you get faster speeds because you are closer to the towers.

writing a phone review usually entails giving an actuall review of the phone. not the carrier. i have had sprint and verizon. love verizon. hated sprint. either way the phone is great. sorry you cant get it on sprint? but next time review the product you are reviewing. not the carrier of said product. especially seeing as how more than one provider has the razr. good luck and hope sprint gets the phone for you. or if your tech savvy buy the phone off ebay and have it unlocked.

THEY HAVE ALL TYPES O DIFERENT PHONES AND THEY FIT EVERYONES STYLE SO STOP BLA BLA BLA SPRINTVERIZONING!!!
-
Great Design, but the phone is terrible, I left Sprint to Tmoblie because of this phone. I am so regret, I use this phone only for 20 days, and I can;t stand for it, I paid penalty and go back to sprint. the speaker have a very low small noise, its make me headache, and mico phone speaker can't filter the backgrand noise, its pick up all the noise surround you. I have cell phone since 1992, never have one that bad.
-
Any phone is just as good as a service provider, and sprint is likely the worst one! With Verizon, I've been with them for over 10 years, and now am leaving in 3 weeks when my contract exprires - THEY DO INDEED DISABLE SOME OF THE MOST USEFUL PHONE FEATURES, AND IT SUCKS BIG TIME!!!
-
not a debate on verizon/sprint. why would u give this phone 5 out of 10 based soley on the providers(or lack of) rather than the phone itself?<br>Just curious.
-
it sounds like you are comparing Sprint vs. Verizon's actual service. your review has NOTHING to do with the actual performance of the RAZR. Btw, my sister had Sprint and switched to Verizon because their reception sucked so bad. So who cares if you have to pay more for PDA service, Verizon service basics help the phone do what it's supposed to do, make calls.
-
You've posted this or similar things on alot of Motorola's popular phones that Sprint doesn't have. Maybe it's because CDMA and iDen is dead and Moto. doesn't want to deal with that? Anyway, you really shouldn't post just to advertise sprint.
-
You post the same comment on all of the Verizon Wireless's high end phones. If you love Sprint so much go back reviewing them. I asure you that 100% for your post has nothing to do with the phone itself.
-
I think the phone is a great step forward in the offerings from Verizon. My phone lets me transfer songs and pictures back and forth between my computer via bluetooth. Free ringers and backgrounds for me!<br><br>The main reason that I have Verizon service isn't for data, so I can't comment on that. I use my phone for work and losing calls costs me money. I used to have Sprint in NYC and had to leave because of the service inside buildings. Verizon's coverage is absolutely superior in every way. No more lost calls or dead batteries from losing service.<br><br>It's not perfect but was the answer to my needs.
-
You can jabber on and on about how much you dislike a particular service, or how much you love another. It really doesn't matter. The point it that there are so many options, and there are very rarely moments when one service provider is actually superior to another, that you need to decide what you want and choose from there. If you want the download options, stay away from verizon. If you want the service, stay away from sprint and nextel. I don't use either one. I'm a Cingular customer who just wanted a little info on a phone I was planning to purchase, and what I got was a huge argument about which provider is best. How about this? All of you just rate the damn phone. That's what we're here to see, you know. If we wanted to know about service providers, the question would be asked. So if you don't own the phone, don't use the forum as a soapbox. It's irritating, and it wastes everyone's time. It's not a gang war between providers, it's a hardware review forum. <br><br>[Edited by: admin]

Most users don't care what software they can download to their phone. It's true, Verizon chokes some of the usage of your phone, but I've never felt disabled with verizon....and I do everything with my phone.<br>Sprint's network is cheezy and unreliable. TERRIBLE wall penetration, terrible data performance; particularly when in a car or train. Sprint phones DO NOT roam on Verizon's network unless your Sprint phone is getting absolutely no signal from a Sprint tower, and even then you can only make 911 calls. So if you have a sprint phone, you're stuck with Sprint's network...period! <br>The value of any phone starts with the network it's on. Primarily, people want a phone they can make phone calls on. But also if you're doing mobile web, or vCast (Sprint TV, or whatever Sprint calls it), or text/video messaging....it all requires a reliable signal, and flawless signal performance. For instance, if I get even 1-bar of signal to my EVDO device, I still have high speed capability. With Sprint (and others) your speed degrades as your signal degrades. Also, I can have zero-bars of signal strength and still be able to hold a normal conversation...not so with any other service. So it's not just about the network, but the signal performance. And with poor signal performance, and a poor network, your fancy-shmancy Sprint phone is just a paper weight. So you're stretching rather far by comparing Sprint to Verizon. It's like comparing HD TVs to the old 60s Black and White TV consoles

Thank You, refreshing! Say it like it is.<br>Verizon, today, is going in the same direction and care for the satisfaction of their customer as AT&T did a few years ago... We all know too well what happened. Who !!! SBC and Cingular, for what ? Name value or liability. Dump all these old "bells" and switch to new directions and new ways of thinking. Do not let any of these arrogant companies impose upon you what you can and cannot do.

I have made several posts on phonescoop.com regarding the shady business of Verizon Wireless. Sprint has the best thing going for wireless services. Lets compare..with Sprint you can use your phone as a modem via bluetooth for your computer at EVDO speeds. Sprint Power Vision services are way more advanced then the lame V-Cast. Sprint has LIVE TV..not video clips of previously recorded shows. Sprint has Sirius Satellite Radio, MSPOT Radio and Rhapsody. This is broadband speed streaming music at cd quality..trust me..its AWESOME. My Sprint phone is an IPOD and a streaming music device. Also, unlimited PDA EVDO is 15 bucks..not 45. Verizon limits all the cool features of their phones. Did you know they are now putting their own software in EVERY MODEL PHONE. This means every Verizon phone has the same menus so they can control the phone and cripple vital functions. Everyone says Verizon has the best reception. Guess what..Sprint roams on Verizon for FREE if needed. I can even set my phone on permanent roaming and always pick up their towers..but I don't need to. All you Verizon customers need to wake up and do some research. Verizon used to be the only game in town...GAME OVER !! Save money with Sprint.
-
I love all these phones that are coming out but there arn't really that many "cool" looking phones for sprint! Damn!
-
i really could care less. look at the features of the razr compared to sprint's slim phone the samsung mma900. the samsung is on a better network with more features. <br>i din't know the razr had a wap 2.0 browser. that is so funny! verizon really is a crook!
-
Look at the Moto RAZR, WAP 2.0 browser correct? The A900 has a built in Obigo mobile browser that can open pretty much any web site. You can add any other Java based browser? <br>What can you get? What does daddy Verizon give you? You sure as *** can't download a third party browser. You are stuck with what Verizon chooses to give you. And that is limited, overpriced BREW content.<br>And VCast! You can only use that while on the EV-DO network. With Sprint, you can use Power Visions content all over Sprint's own network! And data prices! Who has better prices, Sprint!<br><br>These are facts! You can't spin them. You can claim all day Verizon has the better network, but read through their stuides. They test all national networks where they can, and most don't have dropped calls. Verizon can only claim what they claim because they might only have one dropped call, while Sprint might have two. Read the facts before you bash Sprint's network!!<br><br>You are paying overpriced fee's for what now? You can't spin it in any way! You Verizon customers are paying out the *** for things we get for less, that works better.<br>Even if you claim voice is better with Verizon, what about their data? Are you spending 45 a month for the same access I get for 10??? <br>Does that make any sense to you?
-
help me to understand why sprint charges you a month in advance for service you have not even met yet. future billing for services not yet coming. hmmmm i'll stay with verizon....superior service and network.
-
It wont work great untill its on Sprints network? That may be the most ignorant statement I've ever heard. Sprints network is so far below Verizons that its not even funny. Im not sure why all you people with sprint are happy to roam off Verizon, that should be an indication that Verizons coverage is supreme to anyone in the USA. I do agree that the Obex being disabled is total BS but how can you dump on the phone and not even own one, please make educated opinions here folks not ignorant rants.
-
verizon and sprint are both great companies. once you use cdma you never want to use gsm again. but verizon's data plan prices are crazy. they cost more then some of the voice plans. that is why i went with sprint. if verizon allowed more brew or java content and lowered their data prices, they would be almost perfect. i can't wait to see verizon overtake cingular, then sprint nextel overtake cingular.<br><br>bye bye cingular and t-mobile!!!!
-
I agree with your review fully !!! Sprint does have better prices on their web plans . I also look at Sprint has having the better plans to . the F&F prevents overage and Verizon does not have any plans like that . if you go over then you pay big time !!! I argue with Verizon people all of the time when I say Sprint has better voice clarity and service in buildings . In the three years I have been with Sprint I might have one call maybe every few months drop . And I have not been to a place yet where I could not get a signal . Even with one bar my calls sound clear !!!<br><br>So Nah Verizon !!!
-
If i was to buy a Treo 650 from Best Buy or radioshack or somewhere like that. Would i just add the ten dollar visions access to my new plan at that time? Because i have seen web sites selling the 650 for 99 dollars with a new service contract. i will switch right now if i can use the ten dollar access with that phone. please let me know!!! <img border="0" src="http://www.cnet.com/i/mb/emoticons/happy.gif" alt=":)">

this is a verizon forum so i will not step out of place and say anything bad about verizon. but corner has a point. a lot of people that have sprint phones use opera mini or mailviwer or gpslocator which are all java. verizon users can't use that software. so you never really get to max out your cell phones performance. you can only use what verizon sells to you. i know brew has its advantages but so does java. the web is full of java programs but brew is another story.

Do you own the Verizon Motorola RAZR V3C? If not, you have absolutely no business posting a review. And although your loyalty to Sprint is admirable (however I disagree, their coverage in California is horrible), your points have no basis in a review for the Motorola RAZR. So why dont you keep your cell provider comments where they belong, instead of wasting your time trying to convince current Verizon customers that Sprint is stupid for not offering the RAZR, which is essentially what you are saying.
-
Sprint has better plans, more add ons, nothing but up to date color phones, a larger private network and larger roaming network. Sprint is just better. But Verizon is not bad by any means. They are much better then T-Mobile & Cingular. I would not put down Verizon at all.
-
people have the right to post reviews and comments, but i just don't think we need to bash anyones carrier of choice. we can comment without being mean to each other.<br>yes, i am a Sprint customer but i do not hate Verizon. it is just their service does not work well for me, my family and friends.<br>that does not mean it does not work well for others.<br>but please don't make fun of Sprint because of some comments made by a review writter.<br><br>they have their point of view, but that should not warrent a Sprint flam writting fight.<br><br>lets just be nice.
-
sprint and nextel are the two most jacked up companies in America !!!!!!!!!!! so shut up,you have the samsung mm-a900 in sprint now. you crybabies dont need the razr
-
I know that Verizon has limited the bluetooth on every other phone in the past, but the Razr DOES have OBEX enabled on the phone, meaning you can transfer your pictures and .mp3s (which can be used as ringtones) to your phone for free over bluetooth.<br><br>You obviously have not used the phone, and just assumed that it was this way.<br><br>And, the reason that Verizon charges so much more than Sprint or probably any other provider is because they have the best network. You pay a premium for premium service. They are the only cell phone service provider that works at my house, and it works very well there too.
-
Sprint's website shows that nights start at 9 PM on fair and flexible, family, and free incoming plans. Advise me on how to get them to change it to 6PM so that I can sign up.
-
if verizon wants to be stupid like this, then it is all their fault when people like myself go looking for a better carrier. i noticed this back when i had verizon but i did not know why it was this way.
-
verizon uses BREW which is so mean on their part because you have to buy their overpriced crap. seeing as you have no other options you are stuck paying their price for whatever content they feel like offering you.
