    "Stylish phone proves very disappointing"

    by next2edgar on July 11, 2006

Pros: Sleek, pocket-friendly, display can be seen in the sun, very good speakerphone, quad-band, good user interface, easy to read display, metal casing that doesnt seem to scratch too much, sturdy.

Cons: Reception bad, ear piece has backgroud hiss even when not calling someone, dropped calls constantly, seems to lock up on occassion, overall not very good as a phone.

Summary: I'm surprised this phone has gotten relatively high reviews. I was excited to see this phone on the market available free from Cingular becuase it was just what I was looking for; candy-bar style phone that will easily fit in my pocket without a useless camera. Also, it has a complete metal casing making it very sturdy. My previous phone was a Motorola V180 that was plastic and very cheaply made.

Overall this phone is an extreme disappointment. First of all, there is a very annoying background hiss in the earpiece that was present in my v180 that gets worse when you make a call. The fact that this hiss was present in my previous Motorola model suggests to me that it is not just this model in particular. When the phone is in standby the hiss is present when the screen is on. This hissing is distracting while making calls. Secondly, when sitting on any table in my home the phone has FULL bars of reception. But, when I pick it up to make a call it loses reception completely. The screen says "call failed". Its very frustrating.

I would NOT reccomend this phone. I plan on sending it back and replacing it with the Nokia 6030 which my wife has and it is much more solid as a phone. The 6030 gets very good reception and the call quality is excellent. Its disappointing to see a phone from Motorola that's reception goes from full to zero simply by putting it to your ear. Furthermore, the earpiece hiss is terrible and is a design flaw that they should have been able to fix easily.
