    "Solid Hybrid Phone"

by xhadow on February 13, 2006

Pros: Functions great as a phone with great reception even in areas where I had service problems with my old phone. Excelent Battery Life

Cons: As a MP3 Player and still/video camera it is far from perfection. Old motorola interface which has needed updating for YEARS!!!!

Summary: I was going to write this review the day I got this phone but I figured to give it the weekend and then give my opinion. This phone is wonderful after working out a few kinks the phone functions almost exactly as I need it to. As a standalone phone it functions great. Now I have heard complaints about having seperate entrys for each number for the same contact but this is easily fixed just buy changing the setting. The battery life is remarkable, and the signal stregth is stronger than any phone I have ever owned.

However, Itunes seems like an afterthought on this phone. While it functions, it does so a little sluggishly and you can't create an on the go playlist. The 100 song limit is frustating but understandable to a point. Espcially since you can have songs converted to smaller bitrates when being transfered to the phone. I have 100 songs on my phone and about 35 megabytes still free on my card... I woul really like to be able to make use of the empty space. Also the phones usb port is 1.1 so transfers are horridly slow. The interal speaker gives it an edge over a Ipod shuffle IMO I think the ablity to select your songs and listen without headphones is great. Also the batterlife while listening to MP3's is outstanding. I listend for almost 8 hours yesterday and the phone only dropped to half a battery. So its perfect for flights plus since it charges quickly by USB you may get off a long flight with a fresh battery.

The camera and video camera are what I have come to expect from cell phones. They arent great but they are good for catching the spur of the minute moments that happen every so often but I wouldn't replace an actual camera.

I am a longtime Sony Ericsson user and I was really skeptical about making the switch but as far as I can see the only thing that is missing is the conversation recorder.

Connecting with a Bluetooth headset is annoying. Not so much the connection aspect but the fact that it reconnects with my motorola headset every 10 minutes creating a loud ping sound in my headsets.

I would like to sum this up by saying that this phone proves that motorola has the capablities to creat a good Itunes phone but its apparent that something is holding them back. With a few improvement I could see this phone as a Nano replacement. However I think that apple knows that and they still want owners of this phone to purchase an Ipod which is keeping motorola from creating an Ipod killer.
