"Wonderful phone, I am very picky!" on by liz03

    Pros: Great size, nice design

Cons: I haven't found any yet

Summary: I never write reviews, so you know this phone has to be good. I am very picky, and go through phones quick if I'm not happy. I've had sony ericssons and motorolas. I had a moto v400 for over a year and loved it so much but wanted bluetooth. That started my search. I purchased a sony ericsson z520 but it won't accept moto pics so I exchanged it for the famous razr. I had my first razr for 5 days and the screen froze. I got the second one and 2 days later the screen went black on it. I got the third one and it worked fine for about 1 week then the end key quit working. I decided finally to give up on the design of the razr because the 3 I had were junk. I loved the v400 so much I decided to go back to that phone only with the newer bluetooth versions (V557). I debated on this or the 551 but I like the black color better than blue, and I think the screen3 might be nice. Anyway...the phone works great, and the battery has been up and working for 3 days with overly normal use with no charging. I am happy I chose the v557, its a keeper, and I'm picky. Thanks

"Very good phone, is what it is!" on by grullotobi

Pros: Beautiful Screens, Signal, Big Keys, Ticker

Cons: Ticker... camera phone lower quality.

Summary: Topeka, KS, Cingular service. Just got the phone yesterday, but I've played with it enough now to be pretty pleased with how it is working.

Very nice fit and feel, love the non skid surface it has, and also like that it has some weight to it. VGA camera is adequate, but not great, but as others say, buy a digital camera to take nice pictures and get over it. I do not have a problem with the volume button on the side, but I am able to put it on 'soft' which does not alow you to adjust it from the outside. Vibrate and other options probably will help, I don't know what someone would do if they need it on loud.. my SO has one also, and we will see how he gets along with his today.

Keys are big and easy to use, the center 'mouse' is very easy to use, personalizing the keys is easy.

Reception is crystal clear, and signal strength is equal to or better than the nokia 6340i that I had (TDMA/GSM quad band phone)

I'll know better when I do my 3.5 hour run to Nebraska in a few weeks, and will try ou the speaker phone then as well.

Both inside and outside screens are nice and clear and easy to read. I've turned the brightness down to the lowest setting, and it is plenty bright. The menu is different, but pretty intuitive, I am able to find and personalize most things without the manual. I'm not taken by the ticker...on the fence on that one, but I get my news fix from the Net on a computer. Seems to have quite a few ads on the ticker so far.. bleah.

Acessing the net for the channels on the ticker is very easy. There is a pause between accessing, but not as bad as my
    s l o w phone connection at home.

Not much for ringtones, but I'll get it figured out how to add some, hopefully without a ton of money spent.

I'm going to try the blue tooth headset.. haven't yet.

Checking out the battery life, but there are quiet a few options, screen saving, turning off the ticker, etc that would probably extend it.. I like having the options to do that.

If the phone is as durable as the old nokia I have, I'll be in tall cotton.

Cingular service went thu a rough patch till they got the AT&T towers on line and figured out. Since then the signal quality is greatly improved. I still hit 'bald spots' but they are generally in valleys and low spots between towers, something none of them can fix 100%

    Updated
works really well. I have found the ticker and bluetooth will run down the battery faster than you would expect.. but still lasts a day to day and a half.

I'm going to turn off the ticker, and only use the headset on long drives. My SO also has one, charged it once, and still has full bars after two days. (ticker off, no bluetooth usage)

I still highly recomend this phone, love the clarity in reception and talking.

    "Excellent phone!" on by jugbone

Pros: Rubberized feel, clear display, Bluetooth(!)

Cons: VGA camer (instead of megapixel)

Summary: I'd heard a lot about the V551, so when we decided to become full-fledged members of Cingular (instead of quasi-ATT) I was happy to see that phone was still available. I actually purchased that one first, but when this one came out 2 days later, I didn't hesitate to head downtown that evening to pick up the newer 557.

Many people have complained about the V551 battery life, I can't vouch for the longevity of the 557 yet, but so far so good. Its been on day 4 and I still have a decent charge even after normal use.

The ticker feature (Screen3) is pretty cool (the weather channel is nice!)

So far its been a good replacement for my other phone (Nokia 3620)

    Well worth the money!

"Pretty good phone with some flaws" on by beernutz

Pros: Good, clean reception; easy to configure

Cons: Battery life using bluetooth; voice dialing doesn't work well

Summary: I have to start by saying I got the phone a month ago free from Cingular when I upgraded (using $50 instant and $50 mail-in rebates) so I have nothing negative to say about the price. I generally like the phone, although I turned off the Ticker function after a day as it is just annoying to me. I don't surf the net using the phone so I can't comment on those features, however, for just making phone calls the phone works very well.

My main negatives have already been mentioned in previous reviews but they are worth repeating. The battery charge diminishes very rapidly if you use a bluetooth headset. I have a Motorola H500 and while I like the headset and it connects easily to the phone, I only get about an hour of talk time when using it.

Also, neither the phone itself, or the headset work worth a darn with the voice dialing feature. First off, it is a P.I.A. just to get the phone to allow you to enter the voice names related to your address book entries. However, even when they have been successfully entered, neither when using the phone or using the headset does the phone respond correctly to your input more than 50% of the time.

I like the phone and won't return it but if you absolutely need a phoone that works efficiently and effectively with a headset then this may not be the one for you. Caveat, this is my first bluetooth phone so if reducing the talk time to less than a third of its normal time when using a headset is normal, then disregard all of the above. I don't think it is normal however.

"not so great after all" on by jkhs

Pros: solid feel, good keyboard, good function

Cons: inadequate standby time, doesn't always boot

Summary: This was my second phone from Cingular - read the reviews here first. It is a very solid, capable phone in all aspects except two - insufficient battery time and, the coup de gras - I found that occasionally it wouldn't turn on - so I'd have to take the battery out and reinstall it in order to get the phone to boot. I sent it back.
