"Nokia's Xpress Music - Initial Reactions" on by FargoUT
Pros: Music player features; User-friendly yet smart interface; Audio quality is superb; Well-designed and fun to use
Cons: LCD scratches easily; Slider; Battery life; Can be pricey
Summary: After a week with the Nokia 5300 Xpress Music (Black), I felt like giving my initial impressions upon using this phone. As a fan of the Nokia brand (primarily due to a comfort with the Nokia UI), I swapped my replacement Motorola Razr and upgraded. First things first...
Phone quality is above average--I have not had any problems with hearing or understanding, and having asked callers how I sound, the answer has been entirely positive. Litle distortion or digital noise is heard by either party. About the only problems I have had with this device from a phone perspective is when I try to remove it from my pocket. Because the phone slides, it will often slide open while I remove it from my pocket. This could be a big problem for those who like to screen their calls. I think you can change this so that the phone will only answer if you press a button.
As a multimedia device, the Xpress Music is again above average. In terms of music, it is superb. Accepting WMA, AAC, AAC+, and MP3s, you can easily transfer music files from your PC to your phone (and vice versa). Nokia provides three USB options--"Nokia Mode", "Music Sync" and "Data Storage". Nokia Mode is used in tandem with Nokia's PC Suite software; Music Sync can be used for music with DRM issues (3 songs downloaded from Yahoo! Music had to be transferred via this method); and the Data Storage mode is great for those who prefer a more hands-on approach--it will act as a USB flash drive (albeit with a rather slow transfer rate).
I have not yet attempted transferring via Bluetooth, although I'm assuming it will be similar to using the provided USB cable. Nokia's PC Suite must be downloaded from their website, and I highly recommend doing so. It is intuitive enough for most users.
My T-Mobile version came with a 1GB MicroSD card, which is a nice bonus. This can hold a decent library of music, photos and video. It can't approach the mammoth sizes of hard-drive based music devices, but I doubt anybody buying this phone really expects it to. This phone nicely doubles as a mobile music player for cyclists, joggers, walkers, etc. The caveat is that the phone is heavier and bulkier than music-dedicated flash-based drives such as the iPod Shuffle, which makes it less adequate for running with (as a cyclist, it has not caused me problems at all).
The audio from music files really depends on the sampling rate and format, but I have found it to be on par with many MP3 players. In a word, excellent! A coworker with an iPod even said it sounded just as good as her Shuffle (in her defense, she is not an audiophile). The equalizer comes in a 5-band variation with several preset equalizers and two user-definable settings. For a phone, this is a welcome feature (it doesn't seem that these equalizers affect voice calls). If hooked up with the provided stereo headset, the phone will pause music when you receive a call or msg, let you answer, then pick up playing where it left off. This is handled very well. The provided 2.5" converter allows standard headphones to be used--while I do not like the additional small part necessary to accomplish this, as I will probably lose it within a month, I appreciate the inclusion.
The play, rewind, fast-forward and pause buttons can all be found on the left side with rubber buttons. The volume and camera buttons are on the right side. I have quickly been able to learn how to switch songs on the fly without taking the phone from my pocket.
Additionally, the radio feature is amazing--while limited to FM stations, the audio quality from these even manages to blow away my Grundig radio I keep at work. It requires headphones to work as an antenna, but the sound is astonishingly clear and robust. If you listen to radio, this will be a nice surprise.
You can set almost any music file as a ring tone, unless it is DRM-protected. This is a rather irritating feature, and it isn't clear if Nokia is to blame for this. But any other music file you have ripped or downloaded can be used as any tone. A very nice feature missing on many phones (including my last Nokia).
The LCD screen is bright and colorful, very pleasing to the eye even in bright sunlight. One major problem is the easily-scratched screen surface. In a week of light use, my LCD screen is already covered with small scratches. I don't know that this will ultimately affect anything in a major way, but it is irritating. Likewise goes for the plastic lens cover of the camera, which could hinder the quality of photos.
The Nokia 5300 is highly customizable, much of which I probably won't even bother with. The design is easy to understand, the audio quality ranges from above-par to excellent, the feature set is surprisingly large, working well as both a phone and a media player.
I have not touched on many of the features of this phone, as they are too numerous for this little review. I will say that Nokia has done an excellent job in attempting to balance music and phone aspects with this unit. While battery life leaves much to be desired (I can run a fully charged battery low in a day of use), I find the Nokia 5300 Xpress Music to be a top-notch mid-tier phone for those seeking fun. Every phone has its quirks, and it is no different here. I recommend visiting a store and trying one out before buying it. With that said, I am very happy with my purchase and hope it lasts for quite some time. -
"A review from an actual owner!!!!!" on by teedee95
Pros: Best value for the money!
Cons: Speakers' quality is diminishing at higher volume.
Summary: I just got the phone couple of days ago from Nokia showroom in Abu Dhabi, UAE. The phone costs $267, and it comes with stereo headphones, and 512 mb micro memory card. First of all, the phone looks really nice and I didn't feel it is bulky at all. The screen is great, and the photo quality was really impressive for a 1.3 mb camera. The music features are the best I have seen for a phone at this price range. The ability to use your own headphone is a BIG plus; the music keys are located in a very nice way and very practical to use; The music player looks superp; and accepting the WMA format was a personal advantage for me.
I had only couple of relatively negative observations regarding the phone: The speakers' quality is diminishing at higher volume; and the availabe alternative phone themes are ugly compared with what other phone makers (specially sonyericsson) are usually provide with their phones (I tried the available red themes to match the phone color and the results were uggglyyyy!!!!).
Other than that, the phone is the BEST value for the money if you really want a decent looking phone with concentration on music and with a practical camera (for a cell phone!!). I was happy that I got exactly what I needed from a cell phone without paying too much for features I know I will never use. I strongly recommend this phone for people who look for practicality, good price, and fun.

"Cute, Great Features, Broken in 2 Wks" on by suzanne31381
Pros: Expandable Memory, Great Speaker, Cute & Small
Cons: Buttons Unresponsive When Warm, Feels A Bit Fragile
Summary: I got the Lilac on March 12 for $150/$50 rebate. By March 26 had determined I'd have to send it back to T-Mobile for a replacement as the external music buttons refused to respond when the phone had been in music mode for about 1/2 hr. I think it gets too warm or something. I bought it for the gym so this made it useless to me. I'm willing to try again because: it has good reception, handy size, great web surfing, good organizer, phonebook, etc. when the buttons work they are very friendly, great speaker loudness (although it takes too many clicks to turn on speakerphone in-call). I find it annoying that I need to go to Gallery to delete files rather than doing it in Music mode, but for this price, it's livable. While synced to my PC it was much easier, though pretty slow. It feels a bit fragile when you slide it (I hope the mechanism will hold up to wear and tear) but it feels smooth and quiet, too. If the next unit works I'd raise my review to an 8.

"greaat phone, you will love it" on by iwantanewphone
Pros: a lot, read review
Cons: no flash, thats pretty much it
Summary: dear all:
i finally got a chance to play with this phone and the motorala rizr today, long enough to write up a few pointers to people considering either of these phones. I must admit when i first found out about the rizr i was hyped, i thought it was amazing from all the features i read about. before it came out, i had wanted the nokia 5300. after the rizr however i didnt think it was as good. When i actually compared them though, i realized that in the long run, the nokia 5300 would end up pleasing me A LOT more. heres why:
1) Although the rizr has a beautiful design and firm slide, the nokia is also very nice too, its a little bigger but its different and stands out. A lot of people have been complaining about the cheap material the nokia is made out of, and that the slider isnt firm, but honestly its completely fine. the slider wiggles around very little when closed, but when I tested out the rizr and the t629, they both shook around just as much. The nokia feels good in your hands, and the material is absoultely fine.
2)sound quality: holy crap, the nokia blew me away when i heard the sound quality of ringtones and the quality of the sound when playing recorded videos. The rizr was measly and poor quality compared to the nokia, almost half as lound and clear. I was a little dissapointed with the rizr when i heard this, but oh well.
3) camera, ok i know it says 2 megapixel, but on the phone it makes no difference. seriously, the nokia 5300 is 1.3 mp and it was actually way better than the rizr due to its qvga screen. the only thing about camera on the rizr that beat the nokia is the fact that it had a flash, that was really nice, but still with all the advantages the nokia has over the rizr i dont think it matters anyways.
4) UI: the ui on the rizr compared to the nokia is sluggish and slow. the nokia is extremely user friendly and it is more responsive and tactile. i guess i could talk about the text messaging in this category. the rizr's texting uses the traditional motorola system, iTAP, which really sucks. seriously i kno people say that you get used to it, but i had a motorola for 1 year and a half and i never got as good as texting as i did on my previous samsung. the nokia's texting is almost the same as samsung maybe even better, but its definetly better than the rizr or any motorola in general.
yeah so thats basically it, just wanted to tell ya'll about some of the things i noticed. i guess this comment is basically telling you guys that if you're looking for a slider phone and ur with tmobile, get the nokia 5300 over the rizr. i kno at first glance the rizr seems a little more slick, but in realilty the nokia is way more practical and easy to use. oh yeah and its really personalizable so u'll have fun with that. aite people, good luck with ur phones. -

Pros: Music Player, Fast, Love the camera, easy to use. BLUETOOTH!
Cons: Scratches easily....kinda bulky
Summary: This Phone is great. I got mine about 3 months ago, I thought that is was the phone for me...but I dont really like the shape of it....nokia could have slim it down a bit.
here is the 411....
The music player is amazing. It is so easy to use, organize and very convinient. I have a MAC so i transfer all my music through blutooth...it couldnt be easyer...Its kinda like geico..so easy a camveman could do it!
The phone is fast, even with music playing in the back. The only thing is thant when you are changing the song's name...the music kinda skips. But other than that, it is very fast.
The camea takes very good photos...in daylight...not so much in low-light situations. But i dont really take pictures in the dark anyway so it really doesnt bother me!
The nokia U.I [user inrterface] is very easy to use, and quick to learn. Texting on the phone is quick [with T9].
But as i mentioned in my cons....
It is rather bulky...i put my phone in my pockets...and if you wear tight jeans like i do...you will see that it looks like some sort of cancer tumor on my thigh...not nice looking [haha] but for you ladies...if you got a purse...i guess that doesnt matter to you.
Also my screen scratched...and i am very careful with my phone so it was kind of strange to me when i found a semi-light scratch on the screen...so that should be a warning for all the clumsy people out there...
So i rated this phone with an 8!
