"Nice upgrade, but missing KEY ELEMENTS"

by dfriedholm on November 17, 2006

Pros: Great Displays, SD Card, Bluetooth

Cons: No Custom Voice Tags, Headset door terrible, Short battery life, fewer ringtones

Summary: I bought this phone after reading the CNet review. PROS: 1.Volume is much better than 6101!! 2.Displays are awesome, and 3. photos are pretty good. 4. FM Radio is handy and sounds nice. (Haven't tried MP3's yet. CONS: 1.Battery life is much shorter than my 6101 while the screen is lit. Lots of messaging, game playing, etc mean very short life. (I lost 1/2 half of a charge on one tech support call with T-Mobile (makes sense...larger screens and same battery as 6101) 2. Keys suffer from Razor envy..flat and slippery. 3. "Enhanced Voice Dialing" from Nokia reads each entry and makes a computer tag from the contact name. Impossible to say it right. If the phone doesn't understand you, (more often than not) it pulls up a list of the it's closest interpretations and DIALS THE FIRST ONE after a few seconds. So much for using bluetooth or any headsets to dial with the phone closed in your pocket.I've used Voice Dialing with custom voicetags on all my other Nokia phones for years. (This may be a dealbreaker for me)
    4. External camera button is VERRRY sensitive. I've had the phone less than a week and already have picked it up over a dozen times to find my camera on or in standby from accidentally being turned on.
    5. Headset (Why does a phone need a headset plug 2/3 the width of the phone??)The headset access flap is hard to open and is in the way when a wired headset is plugged in leaving sharp corners to hang on pockets. It will be gone quickly I predict. 6. Fewer ringtones come on phone particularly the ones I used on my 6101. Conclusion: The jury is still out for me. This one may go back to T-Mobile....improvements may be outweighed by the things they broke.

You tagged this phone's pros and cons very well. I do like the overall volume. Some of the negatives you mentioned are just the way these cell phones are in general. Overall, not a bad phone, I'm surprised at Cnets high rating. Am using one for now and I'm with you, the jury is still out. Take care...

The battery does leave something to be desired, as does the crazy voice dialling! The camera problem can be solved by adjusting the time for the keyguard to engage to a few seconds, which also can be irritating if you dont think fast after you flip it open. The music player works great but it is hard to access from the initial screen, and a hassle to get to as the music is playing..This phone works absolutely wicked with a BT stereo headset! Great sound, and the adjustable music equalizer setting is too cool. All in all I love this phone, the pluses outweigh the minuses for me.

I must agree with this 100%. I am very very frustrated with the fact that voice dialing really bites the big one. Out of 10 different tries on the name Bret I hit it once. I am very disappointed. I have REALLY bad reception where I had good reception before but this could be new plan?

    1. You can't use the camera effectively when the headphone is plugged in. When you open the phone, the lens opens looking right at the plug. OK if you only want to capture te plug. Useless otherwise. Shoot a picture with the phone closed, and you can't see what you're shooting in the external mini-screen because it's on the same side as the camera lens. WHAT WE'RE THEY THINKING?

    2. The dual ear bud headset (illegal to drive with in some states) tangles everytime you take it off. Removing this phone from your pocket when the headset has been connected guarantees you will become a first-class untangler. It takes me an average of two minutes every time. Stupid. Stupid. Stupid ...

    3. Everyone I talked to complains that they can't hear me clearly, whether I'm on the speakerphone of the headset.

I would just add that this is the worse cell phone I had in recent years.
