    "Great if you're tech-savvy"

by antiquitas on December 28, 2006

Pros: Good sound, incredible main display, good mini display, good battery life, good call quality, good keypad, auto key lock, good camera

Cons: not enough customization variety (backlight timer not able to be turned off, power save doesn't always stay off, external camera button is 'too accessible', tricky custom ringtone process

Summary: I really love this phone. My only complaints are listed as the 'cons'.

The major complaint for me is the backlight timer and 'power save'. I like having the option to use these features but I'd prefer there to be an option to turn them off completely. The screen dims in 15 seconds (hardly enough time to read a long text message) and powersave (screen goes black after about a minute) does not seem to want to actually be 'off'.

The other major complaint is the placement of the camera button. I'm not alone in the dislike of its placement. My thumb tends to bump it when I least want it to. It's liveable though.

Now, I would not recommend this phone to people who want to use their own MP3s as ringtones UNLESS they know how to edit their own MP3 files or at least convert them to WMA and are willing to spring for a microSD card for extra space (well worth it, by the way). I tried uploading my own WMA files at 64kbps and they were ok. Some were muddled. After getting a microSD card I made 128kbps WMAs and the sound quality is much, much better. Tones that came with the phone were anything but satisfactory.

Camera is good. I even took great photos from a moving vehicle and was very pleased at the outcome. However, trying to take a photo of print on a page does not work well. Ok if in a bind...

Main display is brilliant. I was literally stunned by the quality. Perfect brightness and contrast in my opinion, but unadjustable.

I love the mini display and the customizations for it.

Keypad is very easy to use. I don't find it too slippery. Buttons are perfect size and sensitivity.

Auto key lock is very customizable time-wise and is very VERY useful especially since the camera button is way too accesible. Having the keys locked while the phone is in your pocket/purse is great, and the keys automatically unlock when the lid is opened.
