"Feature-Packed Phone. Much more than it Looks!"
Pros: Great MP3 player, small size, no need for an IPOD, compatible with some 1GB MMC cards andcan store 30cds of songs or an entire movie in 3gp format, good loudspeaker
Cons: must modify headset to attach 3.5mm connectors, several bugs, not a good camera or video phone but still its satisfactory
Summary: This is all you would need a phone. It can play MP3s in great quality as long as you have the OEM stereo headset or modify this headset to connect to any 3.5mm headphone jack or car cassette adapter. With this you wont need an IPOD as long as you purchase a 1GB MMC card. (2GB is coming soon, just hope it is compatible!). With a 1 GB MMC card, you can store 30 cds of music in its own AAC format but much fewer when you use MP3 format.
The downside to this AAC format is that I cant find any software that can convert MP3 or WMA into the AAC format that is compatible with this phone.( I tried using AAC from other converters but it wont read it, must be different kind of AAC) So I had to burn the song in a CDRW as an audio cd then use Nokia's PC Suite(free at nokia.com) to convert it to AAC. Quite a lot of work since you can only do 20 songs at a time and have to retag each song. But it pays however to do this since after this you would have the songs in the cellphones format stored in your hard drive.
Besides MP3, the phone can also store and play movies! Just convert any movie file to 3gp format using Nokia's PC SUITE (but can only do 10 sec.<grrr!!!!> so you would have to get a 3gp converter which is available online for 20 bucks. Great headturner being able to watch MTVs through it.
By the way, as a bonus, it has a radio!
The camera sucks though. it doesnt have any zoom or flash but why would you need a great camera in a phone anyways I just need it for some unplanned shots so any picture quality will do. The video is also crappy, sort of like that from an old low resolution web cam but at least videos are easy to send through MMS or email. Receiver should have quicktime player to view files in 3gp format.
I have never heard of any cellphones without bugs in it. (except low tech software free or software-less phones) As for this one, it is with the installation of a 1GB MMC. You will notice that when you chech the memory settings through the gallery menu, you would only have 170MB in your 1 GB memory. But when you view it through the Phone Settings Menu, it is read correctly as 997MB. Another thing is that while you are sending a picture or any file stored in the MMC and then you access the gallery, the phone will shut off by itself. My phones software version by the way is 4.43 so if you have a later version, I hope these bugs are gone.
All in all, Nokia 6230 is a great phone.... For its price and size. Since it is a nokia, it has a user friendly menu and easy to navigate the commonly navigated functions like radio, or text messaging. But since it is a nokia, it is not a perfect phone since it has bugs in it.
