"Good for texting -- you will be fairly happy with it."3.5 starson by pcardout
Pros: Faster processor sends texts and pictures faster than my four-year old phone. You can remove some of the home screen icons you don't use. Boots in 22 seconds (faster than many). Battery lasts 2-3 days. Continued refinement of the feature phone.
Cons: The keyboard should be better. The keyboard is the entire reason for this phone to exist. It is hard to text as fast as I want to. I use my thumbnails to hit the keys and I find if I hit the edge of the keys they don't work (or take more effort).
Summary: Even though I have worked in engineering and science in the computing industry since the early 80's, I will not switch to a smart phone until data plans are free and smartphone battery life is as long as a "feature phone". I want my phone to be reliable and always on, and I don't want to need to charge it daily. This phone works decently in this regard (particularly compared to other modern phones), though I had phones 15 years ago that had 5X the battery life of this one and 7-8 years ago that had double the battery life.
I do NOT want to do ANY browsing, mapping, facebooking or tune-downloading on my phone. I just want to make phone-calls and text ... so that is all I can review.
This phone is a continued refinement of the feature phone of a decade ago. Many of the menu keys and settings I set back then are
familiar. They continue to make it somewhat more configurable. I like that you can remove (some of) the default icons on the home screen. The contact management is little changed from a decade ago but is fairly easy. There are adequate "favorites" and "one-touch dial" keys.
The default ring tones are pretty poor, so I actually paid for a couple of tones. The sound quality is decent, as is the camera and video quality. The speakerphone is adequately loud.
I do send a lot of texts to my teenage kids, and I was tired of using a phone without a QWERTY keyboard to do this, so I looked specifically for this phone from Verizon. It is not bad. I feel that the keyboard could be better. It is hard to text as fast as I want to. I use my thumbnails to hit the keys and I find if I hit the edge of the keys they don't work (or take more effort). Should the keys be made of plastic instead of rubber? Should they perhaps be a little higher? I am not sure what would make the difference, but I encourage Samsung engineers reading this review to work hard to make the keyboard outstanding, as that is the real reason that this phone exists.
