    "i like this phone, but..."

by benzslrpee on November 15, 2005

Pros: EV-DO, awesome screen, good battery life for a Sprint phone, video recorder, 2 megapixel camera,

Cons: big, slow shutter speed, sorta squeaky and creaky

Summary: to quell any suspicions, i have this phone and i use it on a daily basis i returned the samsung mm A880 cause it was purple...so let's begin.

-design...ok first things first, if you can't stand a big phone this is not the one for you. cause it's big and quite thick. when you stick it in your pocket it creates this awesome obscene bulge that solicits stares from desperate housewives. just kidding, but it is pretty big. i don't mind cause i have penchant for phones that feel solid in my hand. other than that, it has this swivel screen design found on many video recorders now. i'm not sure if it's a sturdy construction seeing as how there is lateral play when jiggling the screen...but so far it still snaps close with authority. i guess only time will tell on this part. volume/camera/speaker phone buttons are located on the right side...my last phone had the controls on the left so it took awhile to get used to. the keys are well pronounced, easy to feel around in the dark and emits a satisfying 'click' when pressed. camera/recorder lens is located on the left side where the hinge is. major thumbs down because this attracted a lot of finger smudges because there is no lens cover. also on the left side is the transflash slot and head phone slot.

features...holy crap its chock-full of goodies. or if you don't like goodies, then stuff that will keep you busy for a long while. the big selling point for this phone is the camera with which i have a love hate relationship with. if you're trying take a snap shot of a dancing stripper for the boys, good luck, the slow shutter speed makes the image blurry...however if for some she threw out her back and can't move, well lucky you, the pictures turns out to be the best picture ever taken by a camera phone. it has a 2X optical zoom and 3X digital zoom, flash, autofocus (works pretty decent), and some other photomodes (sepia, black n white...etc) with the recorder, it will record as long as you have memory and a steady hand. the usual suspects are rounded up as well, photo ID for callers, 500 name phone book, blue tooth, external screen, animated screen savers...etc. business card scanner is a pretty cool thing, take a pic of your boss' business card and the phone will scan it in for ya...don't know why you would do that though. voice command stuff...i don't use it much just cause i'm always in an loud environment so its difficult. good at gaming if you like that stuff, the phone has a built in motion sensor that games (dice, beatbox...included in phone) focuses on. jiggle the phone and the dice rattles around on screen, pretty much something to kill time while waiting in the doctors office.

battery life...straight up talk time is somewhere above 4 hours, my ears went numb after the 3 hrs 45 min so i didn't push it but it still ran another half a day before the phone prompted i needed to charge it. when it's low on battery the phone automatically shuts off the keypad lights to save battery, neat feature, it also deactivates the camera/recording capabilities as well. with a mixture of camera, talking and recording i managed a 3 day usage before charging...your mileage may very. not comparable to gsm phones, but for sprint, its pretty damned good.

ev-do...holy shazbot it's fast. the streaming videos are cool if you have it on your plan. resolution could be better but it is on a phone after all. picture mail/video mail definitely work better, faster sending rates. it can hook up to your laptop/computer via bluetooth or usb and work as a EV-DO modem. haven't used this feature yet so i really can't say anything.

all in all a good phone, although the size will for sure turn people away. but, if you can get over that fact, by all means by it, use it, have fun with it

People saying the camera does a terrible job. Well sorry to say it is now fix my phone since I updated my Phone Firmware. This fixed my cell camera that causes the slow shutter speed and blurry pics you take shots. Now my pictures comes out very clear and no more blurs. People who returned the phone and say this is a bad phone to have. I am laughing at you all now. Thanks to sprint they have a firmware that fixed most of the bugs on the phone. this is the best cellphone with the most bells and whistles. This phone can do most of the Treo phones. The bluetooth works great and also sending my pictures works great and my camcorder mode works even more great when doing video recording.

Again Samsung makes the best cellphones out there. That is why this is my 4th samsung phone and never complaint about it.

I'm thinking of getting this phone or the Samsung A900, and I'm still not quite sure which one to get. I looked at both reviews on CNET for the phones, but couldn't exactly tell which one would seem to be better. Would you happen to be able to help me choose which one to get?

I'd appreciate it if you could do that for me, thanks..

And if possible could you e-mail me what you have to say too, just in case I forget to check back here? My email is: typemilitant@gmail.com

Hi! I'm planning to purchase this phone and I'd like to know exactly what im buying. I've read and heard about the poor quality of the pictures taken on this phone. Well I have owned a couple of Samsung camera phones and they too had a poor poor qualiy of blurryness. However, the blurryness only applied when the picture settings were set to the highest qualities, but once I lowered the resolution a bit to like 640X480 or lower the pictures were perfectly fine. These phones I've owned were 1.3 mps. Can you change the resolution on this phone too to perfect the picture's quality so its not blurry?
