"Excellent addition to the Sprint call/text lineup" on by SororSalsa
Pros: Well-spaced QWERTY keyboard
One-Click software
Solid feelCons: Call and text logs combine all numbers/messages into one list...no separate Incoming/Outgoing/Missed Calls lists
Summary: I have had the Sumsung Rant for just one day, but I am very impressed with this phone. I've seen some initial reviews that said the phone was too heavy, but I feel like it merely has a well-constructed, solid feel. I don't feel as though the phone would shatter if it was dropped.
10/27/08 - I have had the phone for a week now. Battery life is very good. I do not use the phone to browse the internet, so I cannot speak on that.
The slide-out QWERTY keyboard is excellent. The letters are spaced out nicely and it makes sending texts very easy. The screen shifts from portrait to landscape when the keyboard slides out, and the phone has two buttons that are conveniently located on top of the keyboard so that the phone doesn't have to be turned if you need to go to "Options" or "Contacts".
I've only taken one photo with the camera, but if taken in proper light, the picture comes out pretty well. Not digital camera quality, but fine for a cell phone.
The sound quality of the phone is good, both from the receiver and with a headset. The phone comes with a number of preset ringtones...I chose the one that actually sounds like a phone for my ringer. There are both ringtones and melodies that come with the phone, and you can use your own.
The only con that I have found so far is that the call log has all calls combined into one list. My previous Samsung had a separate list for Incoming, Outgiong and Missed calls. One thing I do like is that you can see a back and forth history of text messages with a Contact...that's pretty nice.
I have found this phone to be very intuitive. I judge a phone by how much I can do without reading a manual. I have set up everything I need without reading the manual at all. The phone also has a built-in tutorial for One Click, which I think is great if you don't feel like reading.
I give this phone 4 1/2 stars...if I find a way to set up separate call logs, I'll give it 5 stars. At $49.99, this is a great new addition for Sprint!

After exploring the phone further, I have decided that I like the new Sprint setup better than the previous one. Both calls and texts can be viewed by contact to show text conversations and incoming/outgoing/missed calls. At first, I missed the separate call logs, but being able to view interactions by contact in one place is very helpful.
I have noticed the phone doing some interesting things...last night the phone rang, and a female voice announced that I had a call from a Blocked ID. I am not sure if I changed a setting that does this, or if it's automatic. Before I make judgement, I am going to take the phone back to the store to ask about this.
Updated on Oct 29, 2008I did discover that the Rant has a "Voice Caller ID" feature, which was the talking voice I heard. I turned it off, as I found it a bit spooky. I guess it would be helpful it you were not looking at the phone display to know who is calling, but it didn't appeal to me. Since I took the phone into the Sprint store, I haven't had any more issues. I keep the key lock on, and this had eliminated numbers being dialed by accident. I am very pleased with this phone.
The battery life on this phone is excellent. I do not surf the internet, so that may be why the battery last so long. I am considering getting a car charger, but so far I have had no need for it. -
"You will be taking this phone back if you buy it. LEMON" on by bentangle
Pros: You get a new phone once a week/month because the old one freezes
Cons: Before you buy this phone please google "samsung rant freezes". Tomorrow morning I will be replacing my 5th rant. All of them have done the EXACT SAME THING. They freeze right after the "loading..." screen AND NEVER RESTART! Black screen of death!
Summary: Only a FOOL would buy this phone after reading this review! Only a fool would not take the 2 minutes required to google "samsung rant freezes" and find out that this problem is widespread and still not fixed. If you read that "this problem has been fixed with the latest firmware" thats a LIE typed in by someone who doesnt know any better. When I say it freezes I mean IT FREEZES. Its useless, it will never work again, its bricked, whatever you want to call it. NO you cant take out the battery and put it back in and have it work again, its FROZEN. No you wont be able to "reset it" by some magic, its broken. Your recourse will be to take it back to where you got and get a brand new one. If you like having a new phone weekly/monthly and dont mind going into the store and getting a new one each time this phone freezes on you, then you have found your perfect phone! Honestly I think they need to recall this phone, or someone should file a class action lawsuit. Samsung and sprint are well aware of the problem and both seem helpless to "fix it". ITS ONLY A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE SOMEONE NEEDS 911 EMERGENCY SERVICES AND SOMEONE DIES BECAUSE THIS PHONE "FREEZES" AND WONT COMPLETE A SIMPLE CALL TO 911.

"Nice solid phone" on by jlshores
Pros: The construction of the phone is amazing. I mean it feels like it can take a beating. That being said... dont try it!
Comes in nice colors!Cons: Kind of heavy, but that goes hand and hand with the tough build of it.
Summary: To make a long story short, this is a very good phone. I am a lover of slider phones and like my last phone, the slide function is always nice to have. Also very nice size screen too.

"The Rant is Garbage!" on by joemc7889
Pros: 1 out of the 4 Rants I bought at Christmas has not had an issue yet!
Cons: The other 3 out of 4 Rants have had serious issues: 1st one froze up - had to be replaced. 2nd one had problems with the charging port. Samsung refused to fix it under warrenty. They said I "abused" it. 3rd one - same port issue? Hmmm? Abuse?
Summary: The other 3 out of 4 Rants purchased 4 months ago have had serious issues. The 1st one happened within 2 weeks of use. It froze up repeatedly. Sprint repalced it free of charge. The second one had a problem with the charging port. This happened 2months after purchase. Had to send to Samsung for warrenty work. Samsung claimed it was "Abuse" and that it was no longer covered by the warrenty. There was no abuse! I'm stuck with a defective phone. There is no way to charge the phone now. Then when they sent it back to me saying "good luck buddy" they sent it without the port that you use to charge it. It's now worthless after only 3 months. And they could give a hoot. When I called them, they said that's the technicians call, and that's it. Too damn bad. I not only won't ever buy another Samsung phone, I will never buy anything from Samsung!!!! This phone is deffective and they know it. Don't get screwed like me. The 3rd phone is also having problems with the charging port. I'm sure it's only a matter of time before this one goes. I'm sure Samsung will tell me that "Abuse" must run in my family. What has happened to honest customer service! Simply stated, 3 out of 4 phone are a problem within 3 months of use. I would say that's an indication of a serious design problem. DO NOT PURCHASE THIS PHONE. YOU WILL BE SORRY!

"Solid phone, but frustrating limitations with ringtones" on by markballa23
Pros: Good sound quality when using mp3 player.
Keyboard is convenient for texting.
plenty of tools and features.
Camera quality is great.
GPS NavigationCons: cannot use mp3s as ring tones.
mediocre battery life.
Screen sometimes freezes when trying to unlock phone.Summary: The phone has all the features you need if you're planning on getting a data plan with sprint; Navigation, IM, Video, Internet, and Email are at your fingertips. But the inability to set your own Mp3s as ringtones is unacceptable. There are workarounds on numerous websites in converting your Mp3 to another file format be set as a ringtone, but it involves shortening and degrading sound quality significantly. This is a glaring feature omission that I highly value and was planning on using and should be a standard implementation with Mp3 enabled phones. I would have given the phone a 4-star rating if this was a feature to the rant.
